RE4: PS2 or GC?

Ford Prefect

GAAAAAAAAY
I've got a 62" HDTV and important to me are not any extras either edition might have but picture quality and widescreen compatability. I have component cables for the PS2 but only S-video for the Gamecube.

The Gamecube version has this weird effect when played through composite on my HDTV. Somewhat of a rainbowing effect. I don't know if it looks better through S-video.

Get the Gamecube version, as it is only $9.99

gc version, though its lack of anamorphic widescreen is a bummer. i don't think the ps2 version's in-game graphics compromises are so bad, but the fmv cutscenes really bug me.

GC

It's cheaper and I believe it has better graphics. Don't let the fear of widescreen support fool you. All you have to do is select the widescreen option on your tv that fills the screen horizontally and because the game is letterboxed you won't miss a thing and you won't have to stretch the image.

Anamorphic widescreen: what do you mean? Does the GC version not support 16:9? That's a biggie.

The difference in graphics between the PS2 port and the GC original is really massive(at least, it becomes massive to me when the game constantly switches between in-game ps2 graphics and the pre-recorded cut-scenes from the GC version). Just go with the original, the added material is worthless anyway.

Yes I play the game on my widescreen without stretching or cropping visuals and it looks great threw svideo.

gc version doesn't support 16:9, no...on a widescreen tv you'd either have to run it in a little window or zoom it if your tv has that function (and if you can tolerate the resulting picture quality).

too bad *****'s xbox re4 rumor never panned out. i don't feel like playing either version of re4 on my current tv.

I own both versions, and the GC version is definitely the one to play. The added content on the PS2 really is as worthless as a previous poster described.

The GC version is 4:3 (standard TV size) with black bars to imitate a widescreen display
The PS2 version is 16:9

They don't imitate, they fascilitate. Make sure your TV has more than just 1 setting for widescreen. it should have a "fit to screen option" and a " fill horizontally" option.

yeah, ONLY get the PS2 version if the 16:9 is a dealbreaker to you. The GC version is no slouch and still looks bloody amazing. Plus it has better lighting and no crappy FMV

plus...it controls better

if you've never played the GC version, you probably won't notice much. The PS2 version is still an excellent looking game.

When the cut-scenes kick in, he will notice, unless he's legally blind. The FMV before the fight with the village chief makes the actual fight in the ps2 port look like garbage.

Honestly, Ford Prefect, just play RE4 on one of your CRTs. I think the larger screen, the less impressive this one will be.

I like the controls better as well

The GCN version on my 52in wide looked nice. Use the zoom feature and it fits perfectly.

Zoom feature, there you go. On my TV its called theatre mode 2. I think any widescreen worth its weight in salt has some option that does the same thing (and probably called something different.)

ps2 version gives u extra weapons you dont need, an extra alternative costume set (for 3rd run thru?) and a new side mission. GC version has better graphics and better controls (supposedly PS2 version is slightly clunky)

Ive heard that in the ps2 version if u use an alternate costume, the cutscenes will still show leon in default clothes. It is not this way in GC version.

ultimately, the decision is about either better graphics or an extra end-game side quest.

PS2 version has shite sound effects. They sound muffled compared to the GC version if you have a good sound setup.

It's a tradeoff.

The PS2 version is one disc. If true 16x9 and 24-bit color is your thing, then get the PS2 version.

If you want uncompressed, non-tinny sound, no FMV cutscenes, and no graphical shortcuts, get the GC version.

First, the GC offers a better component output than either both the PS2 and Xbox. It looks crisper, and the colours are incredibly vibrant.

As far as RE4 goes, after some intensive personal comparisons, if you're a graphic whore than by any means go with the GC version. As mentioned, not only does it feature better overall graphics and controls, for some reasons the PS2 version looks really brown, whereas the overall colours in the GC version is more uniform.

Definitive answer: if you have an HDTV, GCN version for 10$ is a no brainer, along with the component cables, you'll thank me later.

I'm playing Separate Ways now and it's the most amazing extra a game could have. Whoever said the extras are worthless probably never tried them.

Anyway, tough decision, but I'd rather play the GC version and experience the better graphics - that is, mainly better lighting (MUCH better I'd say) and color. Check out these videos to see how big the difference could be between the two versions: PS2 and GC.

PS2 version with 480p and through component looks better on my 42in LCD RP Sony than the GC version zoomed in through S-Video.

It damn well should look better.

Game Cube version, no damn contest

Not even close.

It only has 2 new areas in it's entirety, reduced enemy variety, and very few weapons. Separate Ways being a waste of my time is my opinion, but it being the best extra ever isn't even a possibilty. Mercenaries is a way better extra in the same game.

You just got an Ada boner, admit it.

What the hell is so special about Seperate Ways. It's just a sliced up version of the main game with slight differences. The 2 extra levels aren't worth the graphical downgrade.

Well, it's an extra. As far as extras go, 4 hours of gameplay, new weapons and 2 new areas are more than anything I remember seeing in other games. Of course, AA and Mercenaries are also great, but I'm finding this one the most fun.

I love that you actually see Leon running and shooting from distance, and there're some nice touches everywhere, like when you find a Granado
wearing Leon's jacket :)

But, again, I'd rather play the GC version.

I agree. It's a great extra, as a guy who bought both versions, I win either way. It sort of reminds me of RE2 two different perspectives. More RE4 ain't a bad thing, that and it sort of would bug me knowing there is more to the storylines scenerios.

To be blunt, you sort of answered the pick with PS2 regarding the picture quality and widescreen compatability but others have already addressed the benefits of the GC version too. If you really want both benefits at best it's only $50 for the two, but for $10 you can't go wrong.

Gamecube version is garbage compared to the PS2 version. PS2 version has true widescreen, more weapons and an extra scenario.

Graphically speaking?

Gamecube version. Anyone who's seen both and says otherwise is a PS2 fanboy. The graphical faults in the Gamecube version (not true 16:9, lower color depth) are miniscule compared to the dramatic downgrade in geometry, texturing and especially lighting the PS2 version received.

Content-wise, the PS2 wins of course, but I'd still take the Cube version for the seamless cutscene parts, better graphics, sounds, and control. The PS2 version also suffers from enemies that spawn closer to you for some reason, sometimes even appearing right in your face, as if they game can't properly spawn them away from you (around corners, etc) like the Cube version does. It was weird.

Here are a few comparison shots:

GC with 480p and much cleaner graphics/lighting/poly counts is the best way to go.
I do admit though that the "seperate ways" story line in the PS2 version offers up some pretty slick background info. Other than that though the Cube version eats the PS2 version alive.
