RE4: PS2 or GC?

Whoever made that page should have done more comparison shots instead of having 3 pics of the same area

How many more shot s do you need to see? I mean the 2 with the 2 dogs and the torch should be more than enough to see the dramatic difference. Are you still inconclusive? :lol

Despite playing every fucking RE game on the Dual Shock controller, it's just much better on the GCN pad. Mostly because the controls aren't balls awful. Also because the big fucking "I WIN" button actually works well for this game.
That said, I ended up with the PS2 version cause I got for $12 and this was before the GCN one dropped to $10.

gc version, though its lack of anamorphic widescreen is a bummer. i don't think the ps2 version's in-game graphics compromises are so bad, but the fmv cutscenes really bug me.

I was going to post exactly this. I mean once I finished the PS2 version, I considered renegging on the trade I made with a friend for my old GC copy. I really miss the fluidity of the rendered cutscenes and...err lack of loading cuts.

Game Cube version, no damn contest

Not even close.

It only has 2 new areas in it's entirety, reduced enemy variety, and very few weapons. Separate Ways being a waste of my time is my opinion, but it being the best extra ever isn't even a possibilty. Mercenaries is a way better extra in the same game.

You just got an Ada boner, admit it.
how does seperate ways compare to the other ada quest thats in the original?

Separate Ways is longer, with more weapons, has bosses, and takes place in all three environments. It also does not exactly jive with Assignent Ada in terms of story, clearly making AA un-canon (as if it mattered.)

However I had a better time playing Assignment Ada; go figure. I think it was because her ass looks better in the tight combat pants than the dress. I have an Ada boner.

On a spoilerish note, in Separate Ways you fight a
battleship
, which I felt could not be more out of place.

There really is no definitive version of RE4; if you want the best visual experience, go with the GC version. If you want more content, get the PS2 version.

Neither, both are inferior to what could have been, or what will be when Capcom announces the definite version featuring gamecube quality graphics and ps2 added content.

Right now the game is unplayable because you know you are missing out on extras when playing either version.

An absolute disgrace by Capcom.

That'd be me. I ran out of:

A) patience
B) time
C) willpower
D) the stomach to keep looking at those shitty PS2 graphics

Take a guess.

Actually I just realized it was hardly worth doing in the first place.

If anyone cares enough to ask for more shots, I'll be happy to do some more. Request specific areas if you like.

Get the Gamecube version, as it is only $9.99

If only it were AVAILABLE for $9.99 I searched high and low through Toys'r'us for RE4, but there were NONE. Unfortunately only $40 versions at normal stores are available.

GC

It's cheaper and I believe it has better graphics. Don't let the fear of widescreen support fool you. All you have to do is select the widescreen option on your tv that fills the screen horizontally and because the game is letterboxed you won't miss a thing and you won't have to stretch the image.

You will miss some resolution though.

Potential resolution. If you look at the screenshots of the 2 games the GCN version runs at a crisper res than the PS2 counter anyways and thats with the Zoom feature .

GC version is THE version to get. PS2 version will suffice if you have no choice, but there is no reason to choose it over the GC version if you own a GC.

The GC version sports more detailed models, superior lighting, better controls, and much higher quality audio, realtime cutscenes (with smoother QTE sequences as a result).

THIS is absolute BS, however. The resolution of the PS2 version IS higher and the image quality is much better. The GC version is extremely jagged and dirty in comparison while also suffering from severe dithering artifacts. This becomes magnified even more when you zoom the picture. The PS2 version offers significantly better image quality...but that is the only area where it outdoes the GC version.

PS2 version has less trees, go for GC version.
Ha ha, that's right, if you're looking at those Ruliweb shots...don't let them fool you. The PS2 port is certainly less detailed, but all of those trees aren't actually missing. Bad comparison there...

The water in the PS2 version really started to bug me. In one area in chapter 1-2, the GC version has water on the floor but absent in the PS2 version.

Aside from GC's graphics superiority and PS2's content superiority, the GC has more enemies and farm animals which affects gameplay. No chickens in Mercenaries mode in the PS2 version.

The GC version has better memory tracking. Like in the village when certain events are triggered, the farm animals disappear in the PS2 version but not in the GC version. Same through out the game for enemies and those dropped items.

480i is higher resolution than 480p? No.

>>>For every sold PS2 version of RE4 Shinji Mikami is one step closer to cutting off his head.

Is that why SSX blew his life savings promoting the PS2 version?? j/k ;-)

Interestingly enough the Japanese PS2 version's sound doesn't seem to be as compressed and muffled as the U.S. version... and it did come out a little over a month later, so perhaps Capcom went back and repaired it in that time. Mind you it's still inferior to the GC release.

It's still censored so it's still worthless.

It's not really worthless per se. It's perfect for people who have a low threshold for blood, and I've met a few peopole who are.

It's really like CODE: Veronica or the Outbreak games.

I would disagree. look at the HUD box on the lower right of each screenshot. The gamecube is clearer by my eye there and everywhere else. If you look at screens at gamespot/IGN/1Up you'll see the same thing. Have I played the PS2 version? no but screens tell me plenty.

I could care less about numbers but In the end they both support 480p

Those captures aren't accurate, I'm afraid. Those screens do not tell plenty. I don't know how he captured them, but he did a terrible job with the PS2 shots. It absolutely does NOT look like that (in terms of image quality). I played both games on a CRT HDTV at 480p while switching back and forth between them noting every tiny detail that had changed. The image quality was the one thing that was quite superior on the PS2, as the GC version is bad in this regard.

Both are 480p and PS2 version supports anamorphic widescreen.

Uh...sure. There's less trees in the PS2 port, period.

Gah! WILL PEOPLE STOP CALLING SEPARATE WAYS "WORTHLESS"?

Anyone who plays it will realize that it hints at a very important plot development that may be used in RE5 or so? It's definitely not worthless! -_-

It's on PS2, it automatically makes it worthless to GAF

Oh yeah, I'll send that beta disc this week, sorry for the delay :| Was gonna send it out last week...

No problem Wario. You got the shipping cash right? :D

Forgot to write thank you on it, so thank you! :)

As for the plot development, if anything GC gamers might get a little lost if they play RE5 and it doesn't bother to explain SW in detail.

STFU
I played the damn thing. It didn't make sense! and I thought it was put together in a hurry. The main game was a lot of better.

Well, that's too bad for you then, but calling it worthless is pretty baseless and deceptive. Most RE fans got it.

kids kids. Buy both to end this stupid argument.

the GC version for the better overall experience and the PS2 version for the bonus.

Wow, it's amazing to see how few realize that the 16:9 mode in the PS2 version is faked. It only zooms off the bars in game rather than your TV doing it. The resolution is no different if you were to zoom your TV with the GC version.

There is, actually. The GC version is significantly more pixelated when zoomed in. There is no question there.

Yes, that's true, but not to the degree that the shot would make you think. They ditched my favorite looking trees, though (the ones with the high-res, moving leaves).

There was a rumor reported a few weeks ago that the GCN is getting Resident Evil 4: Director's Cut sometime this year. Supposedly it'll include all the PS2 extras and possibly more. I suggest waiting for that version, or a denial of the rumor before you purchase.

If that is not going to come out, then get the GCN version.

That doesn't make any sense....so that means Capcom will do it. :lol

BTW RE4 (Cube version) was #1 on Amazon.com yesterday and is currently #2 today so hopefully a lot of people have been buying this game with Christmas money since its worth every penny or the GOTY awards have sparked more interest in it. RE4 PS2 version has been in the 40-60 range which is a big improvement for that as well incase anybody was wondering.
