The guys name in chapter 3 is Ramone Salazar... the same bad guy from season three of 24!

This is a travesty, sham, and a mockery.... its a Travishomockery

And now the thread shall become horribly derailed.

I do wonder if this was intentional or not though.. it seems like it should be considering how popular 24 is.. but.. Maybe Capcom just liked the name?

I never understood why "japs" was considered racist, it's just an abbreviation (unless there's some back story i'm not aware of". I wouldn't be offended if people called canadians "Cans", hell they call us "canucks" and we take pride in it.

Anyway, back on topic.. well i don't watch 24 but i do like RE4 :)

I think maybe because they were referred to as "Japs" during WWII? I know my dad has a newspaper on the wall from the war that says "JAPS SLAUGHTER <SO AND SO NUMBER OF PEOPLE>" or something. Maybe it's a touchy subject, I dunno. Personally I don't see what's so offensive about it, europeans call us yanks, we call canadians canucks, shorthand nicknames are common.

I can see where people take offense at it, as it is as far as I know generally considered a derogatory statement. Like calling someone who is asian an oriental. The crowd who jumps on these things must not be on though because I've seen threads like this just get completely out of hand when something like this is dropped. Hence my post.

"Japs" is probably only racist because of the negative context and how it is taken. "Jews" and "Canucks" and "Arabs" may not be taken in the same way.

ANOTHER THING I NOTICED:

The cultish guys say "go halo go halo" all the time. Actually, my perseptive 7 year old brother noticed!

Well 24 is a HUGE hit in Japan. It's the biggest hit since The X-Files in Japan, so maybe that's why they used that name.

A quick word on racial abuse. Questioning the rationale behind something being found offensive very rarely comes across intelligently. I would surmise that although both are simply shortenings of a full and frank description, terms such as 'Jap' and 'Paki' are widely found to be offensive due to persistent pejorative use over time. My brother and I have held lengthy shitstorm arguments over this, owing to the fact that he has several Pakistani friends between whom the word 'Paki' is tossed around with affection. The thing is, where you cannot rely on the same affectionate bond, use of the term will bring your thinking on such issues to the top of the agenda. They're only words, and you have a right to use them. But if you do not show respect, then you are likely to get called on it.

I have by no means said everything that bears saying on this subject, but I hope I have cast a net wide enough to wrap this issue up until someone actually starts a thread on it, and to allow the purpose of the original discussion to run its course?

1. I think Salazar's a child--the way he reacts to 'pain' (people who've played know what I'm talking about) is very childlike.

2. I'm pretty sure Jap came into derogatory use during WWII--just as with any cultural nickname, people get offended because it lumps them into groups. It's easier to hate "the Japs" than "Hiroshi Miyamoto, age 28, of Tokyo, with three children."
