Well yeah. They aren't very good. First one had some merits, but damn that second one.
No but I'll bet you literally every single dollar I own that there's a Barrel Roll reference in it.
How much do you guys want to bet that there's a hyper competent female pilot in Armada that starts out thinking the protagonist is a bit of a goof, but then grows to accept, and even love him.

In that Atari documentary a decent portion of it is devoted to Cline going to New Mexico to pick up GRRM's DeLoreon to borrow it for his trek to the great dig.

At the same time, i don't think anyone in this thread is necessarily wrong about the book. What i look back and remember liking wasn't the 80s references (half of which were too obscure for me in the first place). I liked the basic plot progression. People stuck/living in VR worlds will always be interesting to me. Which is also probably why i like Sword Art Online more than most on the internet. I think I am willing to put up with a lot of shit when it is in that conceit.
I am not saying "everyone is wrong, the book is great". I am saying yeah it was dumb, but i enjoyed my time with it.
That guy's a dummy, idk what to tell you. I just thought the "well, I read real books and I think RPO is a masterpiece, checkmate haters" tone of your post was funny.
I think RPO is an awful pandering piece of shit that's emblematic of everything that's wrong with "nerd culture", but you are certainly allowed to like whatever you like.

And i think, especially as someone who kind of liked RPO, that when I first heard Armada was coming out I said, "oh no". Then i read the plot synopsis and went. "oh god why".
Okay bud well the cool thing about literary criticism is that multiple people can analyse a work and come away with entirely different, but equally valid analyses. For instance, I thought his post made him sound like a smug goof, you didn't. I think RPO is lowest common denominator trash for morons, he doesn't. The world keeps spinning.

There is literary analysis and there is trying to shit on someone. This forum has a big tendency to shit on people themselves for liking something harmless. You could have acted an adult and just straight apologized for the misconception, but you had to be a dick to him instead.

That's probably what makes him so hated by a lot of people here. RPO was written like a self insert fantasy for pre-teens/early teens (like a Percy Jackson book) but filled with tons of references from long before those kids were born. I mostly liked it for the nostalgia even if it was laid on pretty thick, but it was rough going for awhile (especially towards the end).

I got RPO on Kindle after a friend talked it up as being the spiritual successor to Ender's Game.
It was not.
I didn't hate RPO but I also don't remember much about it besides the base plot and fact that it's over flowing with an unnecessary amount of 80's nerd trivia. Unlike Ender's Game where everything from that book is literally burned into my brain.
P.S. If I'm looking to start a new book which one would you guys recommmend: Steelheart or Red Rising?

I thought that the premise of RPO was interesting, but I had to put it down after the first two chapters. Sad to read that RPO wasn't merely a "one off" poor-execution situation, as I thought there was some talent squirrelled away in there. I'll just keep re-reading Dune for my sci-fi fix.
The most annoying part of RPO was that they were desperate to protect this shitty fremium MMO. If you have that VR tech why not use it to make a good game.
The second most annoying part is when they get somewhere and the author just says "the place looks exactly like Rivendell in the LOTR movies". Wow, thanks for painting a word picture for me jackass.

Wasn't there a "challenge' to the contest that involved them acting out the entirety of Ferris Bueller's Day Off by memory only on a virtual recreation of the film? And I mean this kid was the ONLY one who 'got it" and it was his absolute favorite film, while the "bad team" had to have an entire research team dedicated to researching the 80's to solve these puzzles.
Also I remember him ending up in Columbus, Ohio at the end, this mecca of technology in the future apparently. We're a pretty tech-savvy city with a lot of tech companies but Cline made it seem like Silicon Valley 2.0.
