Real-Time Strategy games

I haven't followed PC games for a few years now (although if there's something on the consoles, I'd like to hear about that too). But now that I've got a brand spankin' new comp, I'd like to get back into playing one of my favorite genres.

I was a big fan of the orginal Dune and am still a fan of StarCraft (with the user-created maps, this game never gets old). The Age of Empires series is also slightly enjoyable.

Haven't been able to get into games like Command & Conquer or WarCraft (sorry but they just don't do it for me).

Based on the above, are there any other series or new series that you'd suggest I check out?

"The Age of Empires series is also slightly enjoyable."

There's Age of Empires 3. :-p

There's also the Warlords Battlecry series which is fun. I'd recommend Kohan, but with the atrocity that is The Unspeakable Sequel, the GAF Kohan scene is dead.

You might dig Rise of Nations - and if you do, you can get psyched for Rise of Legends next year, which may be more your thing going by the Dune/SC love.

After Kohan, nothing else matters to me anymore.

All the rest are realtime clickfest tactical build order micro challenges - which is great if you enjoy that (I did, before Kohan :P). Check out War 3+Expansion for some good competition and a kickass matchmaking system if you enjoy that style of game. There are newer ones, AoE3, blah blah blah. They all parse the same to me, different skin, same game.

:lol wtf?

I'd really not call AoE3 the same game as all the other RTSs if only for Cards. (But, I totally agree with you about Kohan)

PS
EA releasing Command & Conquer 10th anniverary thingy in Jan/Feb.

ALL C&C games to date.
(Except C&C 64, which was an abortion of a port)

I'm going to give Rise of Nations a try. Based on the screens and review, it looks to be a little more up my alley.

Also, it seems Kohan is highly recommended. Don't hurt me, but I've never actually heard of it before. I'm not afraid to try new things though and GAF's recommendations haven't failed me yet. So I'll definitely pick it up.

However, which particular Kohan should I give a go?

wtf?

I know. My friends in highschool used to give me a hard time about it too. There's something about them that just annoy me though.

Kohan: Ahriman's Gift.

Kohan II *gag* is "The Unspeakable Sequel" (fuck, I spoke it.)

I don't think there's much of an online community left for KAG, though.
