Really Basic/Newbie iPod Questions

I just got one, and I know some of my questions are answered by common sense, but I figured to ask anyway.

- First off, if I load a playlist from my Mac that has songs 1, 2, and 3, then load another playlist that has songs 4, 5, and 1 again, it doesn't load another copy of song 1 does it?

- And when I remove a playlist (which I haven't even tried yet), it automatically deletes the associated songs from the iPod as well, right?

- I have the just discontinued 40gig iPod; what's the battery life like?

- I know with most portable devices, its best to use it till the battery is almost dead. But with my iPod, I haven't had a good chance to let it die since I'm constantly updating the content, and therefor re-charging it multiple times. Bad idea?

- Finally, what's a good protective case I should get? I just got one and it fucking scratched the the hell out of mine! It's a plastic hard shell one, I'm so pissed that I got it (the assholes at Tekserve, the local Apple store/service center in NYC recommended it of course).

Playlists are just that, they don't affect what songs are copied to the iPod. Multiple playlists that reference the same file just go after that one; so you don't need to worry about 5 different copies of the same song just because it happens to show up in five different playlists.

A 4G iPod has a "lab" rating of around 8-12 hours, IIRC. Take the lower end of that range and you should have a decent real world battery life.

It's lithium-ion, "topping it off" is perfectly acceptable. The real problem is Apple's battery meter, which blows. Occasionally draining it and recharging it is okay, but it's not something you need to do that often.

Google is your friend. ;) There are dozens of cases available for the iPod, it just comes down to what you want to spend.

case - i use the contour showcase, and it's been perfect. the shell is scratched up quite a bit, but ipod is scratch free. if that's what you have...you might have missed the included foam they have in the box...i initially put my ipod in the case w/o the foam, which i didnt notice and almost threw the foam away along with the box. but the ipod didnt fit snuggly...which annoyed me, and after looking the box i noticed the foam that's supposed to keep the ipod in the case snuggled up and absord the shocks.

playlist - if you delete songs from them, actual songs will not be deleted from the ipod.

battery - it sucks.

That hasn't been true for me. I import a playlist and then copy it in, and i get multiple copies.

For a case, I just use the one that came with my old 40GB photo. Doesn't let me access the controls, but its a good hard slipcase to protect it when its in my bag.

I honestly don't see the point of skins. My friend has a white one and it just looks ugly and gets dirty very quickly. Why not just let your beautiful ipod show itself off, and get a case if it gets too scratched?

I think the battery drops quite quickly if you dont' use it. I left mine for a week and it had no charge left, so top it up every few days.

An actual playlist, whether added to or removed from an iPod, does not affect what music is actually stored in the iPod.

Congrats on the purchase, and enjoy!

Pity you got one of the older models (even though it isn't that old). The newer models are benefiting from better batteries.
