I really like rap with a mellow jazzy hook to it. I really loved Illmatic by Nas and Jay-Z's reasonable doubt, are there any other good rap albums that have a nice jazzy hook to them?

Guru's jazzmataz 1-3 is the easy answer.

Also Tribe Called Quest's Low End Theory comes to mind.

Unwrapped Vol 1 might interest you. It's rerecordings of popular rap from a few years ago done by different jazz artist's. One of the coolest CD's in my collection.

This is more of a jazzy trip-hop CD, and it's a bit strange, but Ki-Oku by DJ Krush is really nice.

Grab up any of Dilated Peoples' 3 albums...

Get ahold of some Jedi Mind Tricks. Stoupe has crazy raw hip hop beats that seems to be what you want.

Also I'm gonna post a song up that fits the bill I took a small break now i'm gonna lay this track down. It has that Jazzy vibe .

I was coming in here to recommend Jazzmataz Vol. 1-3, Dilated Peoples, and early Roots. Looks like my work here is done, and I didn't even have to do it!

Nice shout. That album is genius. Sounds campy on first listen, but goddamn is it deep. One of my most treasured discs.

Toshinori Kondo is a magician on the trumpet, and Krush is at his best on the tables.

I'm shocked no one said anything about Digable Planets. Amatures the lot of you.

I love those guys... I was trying to stay a little current... The lead male went to my highschool in Seattle

Also the Phife Dawg solo album was hot

did that q tip album ever come out?

you know the one. It leaked then never dropped afaik

Official? No. Q-tip mentioned in an interview at the time it was to experimental and the record label wouldn't release it.

One of them formed a new group called Cherrywine. I haven't been able to "acquire" the ablum, I think it's supposed to be jazzy or funk oriented.

Didn't Q-Tip release something in 2000? Breathe and Stop or something like that?

He realized "Amplified" I think that had the singles "breath and stop"and "vivrant" . The one that was never released was under the name Kamaal the Abstract.

PUTS aren't really "jazzy", but they're certainly more melodic than most hiphop groups. They're one of my faves.

in response to the above post, you're right... i guess they're a bit more melodic. but they do tend to use a lot of jazz samples.

the earlier "common sense" albums (currently known as common) are very jazzy as well. then there's also the earlier hiero shit... del, casual, souls of mischief. if you want jazzy stuff, look into the early 90s indy scene.

No one mentioning Pete Rock & Cl Smooth? Also Sound Providers is a good call, Little Brother, Foreign Exchange, Pete Rock's Soul Survivor albums, Tribe Called Quest, Madlib's stuff (check his remix albums and the stuff he did for Blue Note as well as Quasimoto's album)
That will keep you busy for a while.
