Every time I've tried to get into anime I watch one series that I think is really good, but then I end up watching stuff that's supposedly good (If the ratings on stuff like Crunchy Roll and Netflix are anything to go by) but I hate it and I end up giving up for a while. I feel like having people actually recommending stuff will help remedy this problem.

Examples of anime I like
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Wolf Children
Death Note
Welcome to the NHK
Cowboy Bebop
Baccano!

Examples of stuff I hate
Sword Art Online
Oreimo
Bakemonogatari
Love Hina
Negima
Rosario + Vampire
Fairy Tale

Parasyte.

A classic manga from a great mangaka. It's basically about essence of what makes humans different from animals. Some light comedy. Tension. Action.

Pretty good adaptation from Madhouse.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

If you want a slower series to chew on, this is that series. Amazing space opera. Absolutely great characters too. This is what Games of Thrones wishes it was (maybe).

The Tatami Galaxy

Fun, frenetic, and creative series about a college student enjoying the college lifestyle. Pretty trippy.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Moribito Guardian of the Spirit
Samurai Champloo
Attack on Titan

MAH BOI! Man I wish more people didn't pay attention to the anime you listed as stuff you hate, maybe only then we would get some actual quality anime again.
How about Rurouni Kenshin and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood? Have you watched those? Code Geass is good too, not on Death Note level but it's watchable.

Just watch good stuff, there is lot of great anime out there [especially older ones]. Consider Wolf's Rain, Full Metal Panic, Last Exile, Berserk, Vision of Excaflowne, Samurai Champaloo, Black Lagoon, Heroic Age, Speed Grapher, Solty Rei, Blassreiter, Samurai 7... and of course Gurren Lagann.

edit - Planetes!

I really liked Kill La Kill

I was hesitant to watch it because it thought it would be thinly veiled porn. Ended up getting heavy metal Sailor Moon. If you enjoyed Gurren Lagann at all you'll most likely enjoy this too.

And if you haven't watched Gurren Lagann watch that. Best anime I've seen in years.

If in doubt go to this post. It has everything you need on anime including recomendations and detailed posts from other Gaffers and loads of interesting articles and blogs on anime.

If you want my personal recomendations, they are:

- Ojamajo Doremi
- Fist of the North Star
- Keroro Gunso
- Gundam Build Fighters
- Cardcaptor Sakura
- Mawaru Penguindrum
- Trigun
- Mononoke

Should take a while to get through all of that!

I really enjoyed The Devil is a Part-Timer! So underrated.
I would also recommend Steins;Gate - a bit slow at first but it suddenly shifts into overdrive.
I love Welcome to the NHK and those 2 anime came close to scratching that itch for me.

I recommend Parasyte at the moment since it's currently only at 9 episodes. Really good and you can discuss it while its ongoing. I would describe it as a Japanese take on Spiderman with a lot of twists. Some of my all time favorites are Great Teacher Onizuka, Hunter X Hunter, Steins;Gate, YuYu Hakusho, Death Note.

Last Exile

One of my favorite anime series. Gave me a strong Studio Ghibli vibe. I don't really know why. Might have been the emphasis on flying which is one of Miyazaki's favorite themes as well.

Others you may like:

Blood+
Elfen Lied
Shikabane Hime
Fullmetal Alchemist
Claymore

Princess Mononoke

ix9BLEo7yleBk.jpg

One of the best ecological parables ever made and a beautifully animated film. It refuses to settle for an easy, cartoonish answer and instead examines why intelligent beings can be so self-destructive and violent.

Haibane Renmei

iQvp30cR0M1Xc.jpg

A great character drama and psychological examination of the mystery of death. Yoshitoshi ABe's art is great and the series was one of the first in the "healing" genre. It takes a few episodes to set up the world before the drama takes off in earnest.

Grave of the Fireflies

ibkWP9OaQKFs7S.jpg

Haunting and moving film about two children trying to survive during WWII. A very believable and realistic portrayal of childish pride and suffering. One of Takahata's best.

Laputa

ibjgBWTY9hHgCa.jpg

One of the best pure adventure films ever made. An example of nearly-perfect pacing and full to the brim with Miyazaki's inventive designs. Great soundtrack from Joe Hisaishi too, especially the extended international OST.

Spirited Away

iznmzs5RRMuDk.jpg

A visually stunning film with multiple layers of depth and mythological underpinnings. Inventive designs and quirky animation breathe life into the various ghosts, spirits, and demons.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

iMQ3mCGbRgs6q.jpg

One of the funniest, most charming, and most moving time travel movies ever made. Mamoru Hosoda demonstrates his ability to juggle humor, irony, and drama, and the animation is a joy to watch,

The Wings of Honneamise

irmXrCtkr6AsX.jpg

Hard sci-fi movie about an alternate Earth's space race and the way it affects the people living on it. Gainax's most serious work.

Little Witch Academia

i4LaO1JEYrCis.jpg

A charming and exquisitely animated short film by Yoh Yoshinori. Still the best thing Trigger has ever done.

Time of Eve

ieai7DD2AYVgF.jpg

Asimov as anime. It examines what it would mean to have a society full of highly intelligent robots in a gentle and charming way.

My Neighbor Totoro

ioZ0nJ22UGovK.jpg

A really unique fantasy story about two young girls in the countryside and the magical creature they meet. Miyazaki's naturalistic style and flair for fantasy combine to great effect here.

The Vision of Escaflowne

ios2SlnYFwiby.jpg

One of the best fantasy series out there with knights, mecha, monsters, romance, and more. The increasingly outrageous plot is kept in check by the strong archetypal characters, and director Kazuki Akane demonstrates his mastery of dynamic, exciting action sequences.

Monster

ibjbNSaQmkRK0J.jpg

Psychological thriller that examines what it means to be a monster. Features a great sense of atmosphere and an unusual setting for anime, along with a large cast of interesting, complex characters.

The Garden of Words

ibfW5daChiW2pO.jpg

A beautifully drawn film about responding to the pressures of life and feet. Makoto Shinkai's strongest movie so far.

Whisper of the Heart

ibfSePHnSY7pxf.jpg

A coming-of-age story with wonderful animation and charm.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199

ilitYV5piy5FF.jpg

One of the greatest space adventures in anime.

Flowers of Evil

irpgfEwzFax8L.jpg

The story of an introverted teen and how he deals or fails to deal with puberty and its extreme effects on his psyche. The rotoscoping takes some getting used to, especially in its cheaper moments, but Nagahama's ability to depict internal psychological states through external symbolism works wonderfully with Studio Pablo's stunning background art.

The Tatami Galaxy

iJHVSHPtOGw5l.jpg

A love comedy that explores the meaning behind the pursuit of romance. Masaaki Yuasa's fast-paced, unique visual style complements wonderfully the breakneck narration and chronologically confused story.

Fate/Zero

iMMAn9xRRB1Hi.jpg

An incredibly well-done urban fantasy in the "Battle Royale" mode. A rather silly premise taken seriously, with the help of Ei Aoki's mature direction and Ufotable's strong production value.

Only Yesterday

iW5HITVNoOQ6b.jpg

An imaginative film that examines a young girl's childhood and the effects it's had on her as an adult. Takahata's ability to depict normal events in a magical way through the freedom of animation has never been more evident.

From the New World

ixQ7NJwmcd16l.jpg

A post-apocalyptic sci-fi series that deals with the malleable and manipulatable nature of the human mind. True speculative fiction in the sense that the story examines the natural consequences of humans gaining psychic powers. Despite some stumbles, Masashi Ishihama gives the series a sense of palpable, brooding horror and unease.

Colorful

iFKMr4H29Odp4.jpg

A dead boy gets one more chance at life, but he has to solve the mystery of his sin while inhabiting the body of another boy who attempted suicide. The realism of the characters depicted can be crushing, but it's ultimately a hopeful story.

Gunslinger Girl

iJtRwFEMhKm6H.jpg

An action drama that deals with a fictional agency in Italy using pre-teen cyborg assassins and the toll the work takes on the girls and their handlers. Despite the inherent silliness of the premise, the series works hard to portray the characters believably and sympathetically.

Beautiful Dreamer

ikcjzQwQ47Bnw.jpg

Mamoru Oshii at his best. A story about silly characters in a disturbing and mystical situation.

Angel's Egg

ibqK8JGl9d641x.jpg

Mamoru Oshii at his most allegorical, in a slow-paced and deeply symbolic film featuring two characters in a lonely and deeply symbolic world. Features amazing art from Yoshitaka Amano.

Kino's Journey

iQIFLZMbf4j6p.jpg

An exploration of anthropologically-minded short stories. Ryuutarou Nakamura gives the series a consistent and even-handed tone as it explores the kinds of societies that humanity tends to build.

Macross Plus

invMe6V0kimZR.jpg

A stunningly directed OVA series about a group of estranged friends, experimental mecha, and an insane A.I.

Summer Wars

i3HXCJ09TgisI.jpg

An epically fun movie about family ties, the internet, and communication.

Rozen Maiden Zurückspulen

ibwGxHuGzBbbZO.jpg

If you can get past the bad first episode and weird dolls, it's a surprisingly effective depiction of a psychologically damaged shut-in.

Space Dandy

iLU8GvU0ghiay.jpg

An anthology of stand-alone short films built around the framing device of a bumbling alien hunter and his wacky sidekicks. From the creator of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

Harmonie

i7rJtj2g8Q6tK.jpg

A short film about communication and miscommunication.

Hyouka

iEFd3xbaWKsbS.jpg

One of the most richly animated TV series ever made, Hyouka is a surprisingly well-written school life anime focused on mundane mysteries and the people who solve them. What at first glance appear to be stock characters slowly reveal hidden layers and complicated, human motivations, presented with a deliberate pacing and engulfed in the series' lavish, melancholy atmosphere.

I watched the first two episodes, but I couldn't get into it. I might give it another shot.

The Tatami Galaxy

Start with that.

I think I will.

iDOLM@STER

AKB0048
Wake Up Girls
Locodol

Enjoy.

No thanks. I really don't like idols or the culture that surrounds them.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Moribito Guardian of the Spirit
Samurai Champloo
Attack on Titan

I have heard good things about Ghost in the Shell. I had the same experience with Samurai Champloo that I did with Attack on Titan. I watched a few episodes but it just didn't click. I am willing to give it another chance.

MAH BOI! Man I wish more people didn't pay attention to the anime you listed as stuff you hate, maybe only then we would get some actual quality anime again.

I've never seen any of the ones you listed. I'll give them a shot.

There's an anime adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo? Ohh, I'll definitely have to check that out.

I'll respond to the other posts a bit later. Every time I hit the preview post button there's a bunch of new ones.

Watch Planetes. It's my favorite anime show half of the time I'm asked that question. You'll love it even more if you like hard sci-fi.

50463l.jpg

Here's a quote from Wikipedia:

The story of Planetes takes place in the near future. Unlike many other anime and science fiction productions, special care was given in Planetes for a very realistic depiction of space and space travel. For instance, when in a weightless environment, the cel count dramatically increases in order to make weightless motion more fluid and realistic. Also, spaceships make no noise in the vacuum of space and astronauts routinely suffer from known space illnesses such as radiation poisoning, decompression sickness, cancer, brittle bones and mental illnesses spawned from isolation in the vacuum of space.

Both the anime and manga set a precedent of portraying a highly multicultural cast of characters. Usually, characters who refer to anime stereotypes are immediately berated by other characters.

Ghost in the Shell is also pretty good.

Maturity, bitches.

Your lose. I once thought like this and then I decided to give them ago. Then I found enlightenment.

Actually wait, that was from the Laws of Eternity.

Still they are good fun and you should judge a book by its cover. Also iDOLM@STER is the best videogame adaption ever. Even better than the Donkey Kong Country cartoon!

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Incredible action, great characters, a series that takes some risks and makes you question everyone's motives and actions in a fantastic way.
