Maturity, bitches.
Your use of cringe confuses me.

They also called Psycho Pass mature when it's anything but. It's mature in a "I'm mature for my age though" teenage writing kind of way because it has blood and people quote passages from books all the time. So really it's quite comical in its way.

Akane is a good character though.

Clannad.

And if you particularly want to head straight to the "mature only please" part then skip to season 2 Clannad: After Story. Best to watch both though as the first season is slightly less mature because you are dealing with high school and teens transitioning into more adult-like teens.

After Story is the full on adult phase (even though there is still school early on).

EDIT: Oh yeah definitely watch Welcome to the NHK. The cringe is very much intentional and exists for a very genuine reason. God that show was incredible. Probably top 5 for me.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
No one mentioned Berserk? Watch Berserk but the original 90s anime. It's the most well rounded adaptation of the story and characters

Except I totally posted it:

There's a lot of good recommendations in here, but I'm going to offer one I am surprised hasn't come up yet: Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. The dub is decent too (don't get me wrong, there are some awkward line reads, but overall it's pretty good). It's about a 30 year old female bodyguard who takes on a job to guard a prince believed to be possed by a water demon. This will be her 8th bodyguarding job meant to repay the lives of 8 people who gave their lives for her. The setting is a feudal tooootally-not-Japan (It's basically Japan).

It's super good, and done by Production I.G. (The Ghost in the Shell studio).

And of course, if you want to turn the anime up to 12, watch Kill La Kill.

:p Good taste though!

The same guy did Monster and Master Keaton and both are great.

Master Keaton is rather understated and very un-anime.
As someone mentioned it's rather like MacGyver...an 80s globe-trotting adventure.

As an anime it feels understated, because its more realistic and not at all over the top.

Someone mentioned Baccano! which is great, but be forewarned: There's a fair amount of violence/gore and a lot of cursing. The English dub is brilliant, though. Its an anime that works way better in English.

Record of Lodoss War OVAs and Bubblegum Crisis.

Monster is also a good pick too. You will definitely need to be open minded for that show though as its a show in a realistic setting that its often unrealistic at times. Also Darker than Black.

he'd be missing out if he just casually listened to those instead of sitting down and watching them.

*she

i tried space dandy and i could not get into it. the humor really killed it for me. i did enjoy champloo and bebop though

i guess i should mention that i work from home so nsfw stuff is ok

"normal person"

?

"While I do appreciate stuff like Studio Ghibli, I'd prefer something more mature."

???

C'mon, man. Ghibli tackles some pretty heavy shit. I kinda get the feeling from your post that by "mature" you basically mean dark and gritty, right? Because Ghibli films are pretty mature in the themes they tackle, the depth of their characters, et cetera. Anyhow, check out Trigun and Champloo. Given that you like Bebop you'll more than likely enjoy those, they're really good.

i think op meant more down to earth, and less fantastical/sci-fi and less melodramatic

Kill la Kill is a terrible recommendation given his experience and what he's watched.

You'd easily drive him away from anime as much as you'd make him full-on weeb.

If you're really open minded you will like most of good anime.

Oh man you sound exactly like me. You stumbled on NGE and Cowboy Bebop and thought "hey I should give this anime thing a go" only to discover shows like that are few and far between.

Nahhh, there's so much amazing stuff to watch it's a fucking goldmine.

top of me head:

FMC/Trigun/Code Geass/Shinsekai Yori/Samurai Champloo/Berserk/Monster/Mushishi/Baccano and so on and so forth

There's a lot of good recommendations in here, but I'm going to offer one I am surprised hasn't come up yet: Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

yessir, lovely show.

That wasn't the primary recommendation of the post, but I thought that was obvious.

Make it a point to show my closer friends Samurai Champloo.

Absolutely anyone can get into it and has top-notch action scenes and each episode has it's own story to it.

Cowboy Bebop is good too, but Champloo is a lot easier to get into.

The last time I posted my go to answer for this it got deleted
:(
, so this time I'll play by the rules and suggest Cowboy Bebop. It's timeless.

I also still really like .hack//SIGN, but that's kind of an experience with the games and the anime that comes with the games as well.

Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy are pretty safe bets.

I just watched Kill la Kill and really enjoyed it, but that's probably not a good one for a beginner. :p

Also using this thread for recommendations for myself for when I eventually finish Death Note.

Edit:

Whatever you do. Do not watch Kill La Kill.

Hahahahahaha.

Double Edit:

Didn't see you'd already seen Bebop.

Any Ghibli film, the first recent ghost in the shell OVA, Gurren Lagann, and Full Metal Alchemist are great after you watch Champloo too.
Edit: Oh and +1 to Bebop.

Space Dandy is great but you might be a bit weirded out.

One can't go wrong with Studio Ghibli. But don't approach anime from this perspective in my opinion. Expect crazy stuff and love it. The more insane the better.

The only mystery is why it is classed a mystery, anyone who consumes media outside of anime saw it on the 3rd ep.
Oh please, there were tons of redeeming aspects to the show, even if you guessed it by episode 3. The journey, arcs, art, and direction were top notch. If you think the only mystery is who the
killer
is, that's being terribly reductionist.

I'll just lost my typical Anime for people who aren't yet fans of anime list:

Anything by Shinichiro Watanabe, this includes Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Kids on the Slope, Terror in Resonance, and Space Dandy (this one is better for people who already really love anime). He's my favorite anime director and one of the best at creating works that bridge the gap between Japanese and western audiences. His shows have a big focus on music, which is nice if you are a music buff (especially the shows that feature Yoko Kanno; she's incredible)

Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood): Has a very Western-inspired design for the world and characters, no complex Japanese names or odd cultural things that a western audience wouldn't understand. The dub is amazing, and while in some respects this show can be a typical shonen series, it is much more mature and complex than most shonen-esque series. Great narrative, great characters, and an interesting setting with struggles and parallels to our own, especially in the west. A must watch.

Psycho Pass: Apparently some people are down on this show in this thread, but imo it is nothing short of fantastic. Incredibly well-paced, top-notch writing, with a blade runner meets 1984 style setting that is a very compelling backdrop for what basically amounts to a detective thriller. Very similar to western police/serial killer dramas, and the characters and their relationships are quite compelling. Also features one of my favorite anime villains. Definitely a must watch.

These are the ones I would recommend right away, but there are plenty of great series out there for anime newcomers.

Edit: Also Mushishi, a very approachable and interesting supernatural themed anime. Has a good dub as well.
