Long story shot, my computer died on me and I spent my last dime trying to revive it. What I use my computer for is pretty CPU and Soundcard intensive (music)... so I'm wondering what kind of set up I should get. Note that I don't play games, so a high end videocard isn't really necessary.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
2GB DDR RAM
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elie Pro
and maybe a Geforce 7800GT just in case

Do I need a new operating system and everything for a 64-bit processor?

You need a 64-bit OS if you want to take advantage of at least some of the CPU's 64-bit abilities, yes.

Aight. So should I go with the AMD of go for a Pentium with hyperthreading (?). A friend of mine has that and is able to run two instances of DAOC. I won't be doing that, but will it help out with rendering music files at all, or is it just for running two of the same program?

Id never recomend buying top of the range pc stuff anymore, its just not worth it, go check out a mid priced dell then build it yourself with a better graphics card.
