Well, I've never been a big movie person.. once in a while I go to the cinema, but other than that I've never really been that interested. But lately I've been watching IFC a lot and I've seen some of the most touchings films ever. American History X, for example, I really wasn't aware of the power of cinema to be so moving. Another movie I saw just recently, Monster, was absolutely terrific... so yeah recommend me some stuff. I'd rather more 'arty' movies... dramas maybe, no sci-fi stuff no comedies. I'm joining the Columbia House DVD club and I'm getting, so far,:

American History X
Y Tu Mama Tambien
The Pianist

so yeah... recommend away...

i'm not trying to be an ass, but is that grammatically correct? It just sounds off for some reason.

There is nothing wrong with it, gramatically speaking. Perhaps I should have said "recommend me a few movies" or something, but whatever.

And yes, you WERE trying to be an ass. Fission Mailed.

For gritty films with a bit of action, check out:
La Haine
Croupier
Real Fiction

For romance drama that isn't sappy, check out:
3-Iron / Bin-jip

I suggest:
Titus- Julie Taymor (Broadway's Lion King) produces one of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, a dark and gory descent into madness. Great cast. White hot production and costume design. It has the original script.

Frida
Cannibal: The Musical

A film I like that noone seems to have seen is Horseman on the Roof (Le Hussard sur le Toit) a semi-romantic adventure set in France during a horrible Cholera epidemic. It features the lovely Juliette Binoche from The Unbearable Lightness of Being and lots of repulsive vomiting of phlegm.

Anything by Akira Kurosawa is great, but Throne of Blood is my personal favorite of his serious films. It is a very accurate recreation of Macbeth in feudal Japan shot on truly amazing sets.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Living in Oblivion can be considered comedies, I suppose, but they feature bizarre stories, surreal tone, and great characters.

CQ is another great, quirky film, but you must have seen Danger: Diabolik! and Barbarella to get the most out of its references.

I have 'The Graduate' playing right now. It won't blow your mind but its always enjoyable and certainly worth watching.

Gattacca: an excellent drama. Don't be scared, it's not "sci-fi" as most people use that word.
Mulholland Drive: bizarre and masterfully constructed. Enough that works logically, and at the same time, surreal connections that only work as symbols.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: I don't know, this might be too wacky for you... but it fits the list.
Daytrippers: awesomely depressing ending. Lots of talking in this one, so be ready.
In the Mood for Love: very well written, if a bit hard to follow at times.
Lost in Translation: like GA people need a description for this one...
Ghost World: great movie
CQ: I'm conflicted on this one... definitely enjoyable.

I would reccomend Rushmore. Its one of my favorite films of all time really.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is also great, as is Amelie. If you're getting The Pianist, the obvious reccomendation is to also check out Schindler's List. City of God was great too.

My Akira Kurosawa pick would be RAN.

If you liked American History X, I think you might like Malcolm X or some of Spike Lee's other work like "Do The Right Thing".

"The House of Sand & Fog" might be to your liking as well.

HAWT! :D.

Have you ever seen these two movies?
A Better Place and L.I.E. ? These are two of the best serious teen dramas I have ever seen in my life. I recommend these because they used air on IFC and Sundance quite often.

Raising Victor Vargas (Where's the Juicy Judy fans at? :D)
Songcatcher

The Cup (This movie is one of the best foreign kid movies/monk films you'll ever see.)
Welcome to the Dollhouse (This movie is just too damn good.)
.......and I know you've already seen Donnie Darko right?

34th most disturbing movie on IFC:
Spanking the Monkey

10th most disturbing movie on IFC:
Pink Flamingos

I'm going to go against the trend of this thread and your stated preferences and say you should take a look at Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as it's by the same director as Y Tu Mama Tambien. It's as if the producers said to themselves, "Well, whatever movie we throw up on the screen will rake in hundreds of millions of dollars anyway, so why don't we make this one an unconventional film, just for the hell of it?" I've only read the first HP novel, which bored me, and I hated the first two HP movies (both of which I watched under duress), but HP3 is amazing from beginning to end.

Also--Fanny and Alexander (director's cut), though Columbia House might not have it yet, and Once Upon a Time in America, following up the Sergio Leone trend in the thread.

And a couple of documentaries--Dogtown and Z-Boys, about the birth of professional skateboarding in the US, and Spellbound, which follows a number of children in their attempt to win the National Spelling Bee.

That's a Spanish actress: Verónica Verdú.

If you liked that, just check Huevos de oro (Golden eggs).

I bet that in the States that film would be M...
