I'll join the chorus of approval for
Cromartie High School, everyone's favorite absurdist comedy about high school thugs and non-sequiter humor.
Freddy demands you watch it. Next up, go download
Yakitate!! Japan:
Totally extreme breadmaking! No, really. It's freakin' hysterical, loaded with bizzare humor, wildly over the top baking competitions, and god-awful puns. And, of course, delicious bread.
Meanwhile, available on DVD, is the classic
Here Is Greenwood:
Our hero Kazuya is an incoming freshman at a prestigous high school - and promptly gets put in the dorm with all the freaks. Cue wacky boarding school hijinx. Gangsters! Ghosts! Extended fantasy parodies! Romance! And, best of all, wonderful characters. Greenwood completely fucking rules.
And, while I'm pimping early 90s OVA series, check out
Assemble Insert:
The cover blurb is pretty accurate, actually - when a bunch of hapless cops hold auditions to find a hero to fight Demon Seed's crime rampage they wind up with Maron-chan, who they promptly turn into an idol singer. It's sweet and goofy and tremendous fun; fifteen bucks gets you two episodes.
Assemble Insert is one-third of the Holy OVA Trinity, the other two being Prefectural Earth Defense Force and Blazing Transfer Student. All three are a hoot and a half, but the other two (long out of print in Japan, let alone the US) might prove tricky to track down.
