what sort of music do you like? if you could list some of your favorite bands and tracks it would be helpful.
Right now I'm in a complete different corner, rap, lo-fi, breakbeat, jazz, old punk (Bad Brains, MDC, Black Flag, Social Distortion etc) 'commercial' rock (Coldplay, Skunk Anansie, K's Choice)
Just trying to expand my musical taste with some good indie-rock.

I really like some of Bright Eyes stuff. Also Phantom Planet has some decent stuff. Some more ambient stuff like !!! isn't bad either. Indie Rock is a REALLY broad category though.

Get in some pop.

Built to Spill
Guided by Voices
Magnetic Fields
Dismemberment Plan
of Montreal

And if you're up to some melancholy dream-pop, then check out the band I always try to press onto people, Galaxie 500.

You might like The Arcade Fire (I don't care what your tastes are, they are amazing), Snow Patrol, Spoon, The Futureheads, The French Kicks, The Walkmen, Les Savy Fav.

Whatever. I'm going to say it: Super Furry Animals. And they're indie, even if they're signed to Sony now. Shut up.

You'll like them if you have any taste whatsoever.

i'll try to recommend stuff that hasnt been mentioned yet.
rock:
AC Newman - slow wonder (power pop)
Pinback - summer in abbadon (ambient rock)
interpol - antics ( i dont know if they are considered indie now)
pretty girls make graves - new romance
sonic youth - daydream nation
the organ - grab that gun
pop:
junior boys - last exit
the faint - wet from birth
cant go wrong with any of the latter flaming lips albums
kings of convenience - versus
mirah - c'mon miracle

Bright Eyes, you can never get enough Bright Eyes.

The Wrens
Ted Leo/Pharmacists
The Decemberists
Dressy Bessy
Apples in Stereo
Optiganally Yours
Jason Molina/Magnolia Electric Co./Songs: Ohia
The Raveonettes
Hot Snakes
All Girl Summer Fun Band

Yeah, that's a pretty big list for now. I'd go find mp3 links and stuff, but I'm fucking lazy.

For the record: Franz Ferdinand is about 100 times better than The Killers, contrary to popular belief, and head and shoulders above Bloc Party, The Futureheads, et al.

There is no good indie rock.
But there is people with bad taste in music. The Wrens are better than every band currently in heavy rotation on the radio/MTV, and every band that has been in heavy rotation on there in the last 15 years, put together.

Her Space Holiday
Explosions in the Sky
Mogwai
Pedro the Lion
The Shins
Zero 7
Rapture
Air

Indie-rock? Damn, I quit that stuff a year ago. I think Spiderland by Slint was last album of that sort I spun.

I remember listening to Xiu Xiu some months ago but that was just for a laugh...

Do people really just "quit" specific kinds of music? I don't think you're the first person I've heard say something like this recently. I still listen to the same bands I listened to when I was 13 and of course I like to discover new stuff, but then again I don't really classify anything I listen to, just listen to what I like, so I guess it would be hard to "quit" a whole genre when they don't even exist for me (and really they're pretty artificial constructs anyway, good for reviews, stores, and little else).

grunge, though the genre itself did seemingly die off the planet after Cobain's death. still, i haven't really given much spins to my dusty Seattle/grunge collection of the early-mid 90s.

TV on the radio. - Young Liars, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes and New Health Rock. All worth hunting down
