Recommend Some PC Engine Games

So I've been messing around with this the past weekend... I tried out a few games that I'd always meant to play. Let me know if there are others I should try out.

Castlevania X: Rondo of Blood - Fantastically overrated, this is an average Castlevania game that had CD quality music back when that was something special. Little girl Maria as a playable character is damn awesome, though.

Bonk's Adventure - Simplistic presentation, simplistic gameplay, below average game. Did this come with the system?

Bonk's Revenge - A drastic improvement imo, I had fun with this one.

Bonk III - Barely touched it, too much Bonk, really.

Air Zonk - Always wanted to try this, too bad it's terrible.

Turrican - I blow up in about a minute, seemed to be pretty shitty.

Devil's Crush - Fantastic pinball game, I remember this was the only game I enjoyed on the TG-16 back when my cousin had one.

Alien Crush - Pretty shitty compared, did this come before or after Devil's Crush?

Bravoman - Complete, utter trash.

Parodius - Great shooter, really liked this one.

Blazing Lazers - Terrible and boring.

I think that's everything I got my hands on.

The PCE version of Salamander (life force) is fantastic. Highest possible recommendation.
Good call on that.

Wasn't there some game about taking pictures, too, or am I thinking of a different system?

For as much priase as the PC-E gets, he had a very mediocre library.

I mean, heaven forbid you don't like shooters...

Nexzr (original or Summer Carnival version)
Star Parodia
Super Star Soldier

(3 of the best vertical shooters)

Parasol Stars
Liquid Kids

(2 Taito platformers)

Bomberman '94

(still the best version)

The PC-Engine sucked.

Psychosis
Super Star Soldier
Soldier Blade
Bonk 1,2,3
Hellfire S

Have to disagree with this, and playing it now doesn't exactly have the same impact as playing it 9 years ago. Also the internet has given it such a mythical status that it couldn't possibly live up to it. Some people are even disappointed by Radiant Silvergun when they get their hands on it these days.

As far as Dracula X goes the music was stunning, but the game itself was quality. The branching paths and secrets, the variety in the stages, the level of imagination in the enemies and bosses. It was also technically stunning for a PC-Engine game, with parallax tricks all over the place and even true parallax in places.

Just edges out SOTN as my favourite Castlevania, and definitely my favourite 'old-school' Castlevania.

I don't think it has much to do with not playing it back then, I've been doing this for a pretty long time and can appreciate older games. I found Castlevania 3 to be a better game in terms of variety, difficulty, and play mechanics. I also think Super Castlevania 4 is a better game. Rondo is on perpetual easy mode and is pretty simplistic all around. Not a bad game by any means, but I don't see how it can even be compared to SotN.

Radiant Silvergun is amazing to me, but that's a discussion for a different thread.

So was the music from Japanese Castlevania 3.
The branching paths and secrets, the variety in the stages, the level of imagination in the enemies and bosses.
See also Castlevania 3, which also happened to be longer, harder, and topped it all off with Grant DaNasty ftw.

It was a decent-looking game on a system full of ugly games. That's not a triumphany victory.

The intro to SotN when you play as Richter already blows all of Rondo out of the water, let alone the main game or the Richter play-through.

You didn't even mention the best part of the game, playable Maria =(

Non-shooters:
Tricky Kick - a whole game based around the most frustrating RPG puzzle type in existence.
Drop Off - Devilishish, though much more abstract. Frickin' hilarious story here.
Loom - Western, kinda cool adventure game. Think it was on PC (Mac?) too.
SPLATTERHOUSE what the hell is wrong with all of you

You guys reminded me I did try a couple more:

Parasol Stars - I got sick of playing Bubble Bobble 18 years ago, I have no interest whatsoever to play its retarded cousin.

Splatterhouse - Pretty neat but hasn't aged well at all. Got to the end of stage 3 and died, not sure if I want to continue.

I remember playing the system back in 95 and wasn't impressed with the games. And no, Castlevania Rondo is nowhere near SoTN or the gba and ds games for that matter.

PCE had some great ARPGs from Hudson, Red & Falcom among others. Ys 1-4, Xanadau 1-2, Xak 1-3, Neutopia 1-2, Exile 1-2, Popful Mail, the various Monster World ports... man, I miss the 16bit days. :(

Ummm, no... Unfortunately a lot of the great CD games stayed in Japan. But I'd take the PCE-CD over the SEGA-CD like any day of the week, sorry Lunar fanboys.

lol! A then you proceed to post a list of shooters.

Dragon's Curse - which is a port of Sega Master System's Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap

Military Madness / Nectaris (already mentioned)

Ninja Spirit

R-Type

Spriggian (very similar to M.U.S.H.A. on Genesis)

Springgian Mark II

Rayxanber III (avoid part II)
