Recommendations for Brutally Fast Games

Lately I've been enjoying brutally fast-paced games where looking away or blinking means game over.

Bullet hell shmups are that way, but I found the same thrill in high speed Trackmania races, in the time trials of Tetris Effect when the pieces fall so fast you blink and they landed, and also when playing Ninja Gaiden 2 Black on Master Ninja where you can't stand still during fights.

It's all about frantic speed that makes you panic. The difficulty must come from the speed of the gameplay, or the amount of buttons you need to mash in correct order.

Searching online hasn't given me satisfying results. I saw a gaming site list Bioshock Infinite in the Top 10 of fast-paced games. Plus I think gaffers might know of a high-speed game mode in an otherwise slow-paced game, which is the kind of stuff that ChatGPT also won't know about.

Across all console generations, what do you recommend I play next?

Once you master the chaining of the drift boosts you unlock unlimited speed. Really, there is no top speed limit in this game!

Devil Daggers is good starting point but then move into Hyper Demon, Doom Eternal on max diff is pretty brutal as well.

DOOM Eternal, probably the only game that made me say "time to take a break" because of how frantic it can get. If you want something retro, you could check out BLOOD: game itself isn't fast but it sure requires some real fast reaction times because of the way enemies are designed.

Can't think of much else. Silksong gave me sweaty hands but I wouldn't say it's "brutally fast" at all. Maybe character action games like DMC or Bayonetta? Dunno.

Also maybe check out rythm games? Stuff like Osu! or Audiosurf can get quite fast and demanding.

If you can play them at a high level, nothing is faster and radder than the MegaMan X series, which definitely ended at 5 and there's no further titles after, except for 8, oddly enough.

A recent one I liked was Ghostrunner.
It's one of those games where any enemy attack can instantly kill you, so you need to constantly keep moving, avoiding attacks, platforming and wall running and hitting enemies from all angles.

It has a sequel too, but I haven't played it yet.

Not brutally fast, but extremely dynamic, you are always moving, aiming and shooting:

Game is crack and cocaine mixed together.

Tried this demo recently that fits the description for a frantic 'racing' game where you better not blink. Wasn't my favorite but definitely unique:

And my current favorite game rn, Kill Knight, that definitely fits your description. Ammo, health, and xp systems are all linked and back buttons are highly recommended:

Polybius - I don't think any of the games mentioned so far are as fast as this. It will melt your eyeballs. (skip about halfway through the video for full speed)

Sekiro is fast, also MH Rise Apex Monsters with Sword and Shield or Dual Blades all short but fast, MH Rise is faster in pace and Apex is maddening, Sunbreak even could one shot if You are not good enough : ))
Ninja Gaiden for sure, Sonic are also fast, there are lot of fast paced games.

Katana zero maybe?

Rhythm games will hand your ass to you on a plate, stuff like taiko no tatsujin can be stupidly fast and brutally hard on the highest difficulty. Rhythm & shmups are 2 of the hardcore genres where you can't just cheese your way through.

An example of oni mode

Ghost Runner 1 would be worth a try.

Ninja gaiden 4 gave me whiplash with how frantic it was. Basically Doom Eternal responsiveness.

Did any of the other games play this fast, because I only played NGB a long time ago, and seemed like it was slower and weightier (not in a bad way though).

Haven't played it and maybe I'm wrong, but I remember about a shoot em up game called Bangai-O where the slow down caused by the chaos on the screen was part of the design.

So you had to kill enemies non stop in order for the explosions to overload the game and take advantage of the slow down to survive.

Returnal and soon Saros are meant to be fast paced, think fast and dont look back rogue like games. Barely time to catch your breath unless you find a save room. (not always present)

Yea but it's not really a fast paced game. More about precision.

And the Dreamcast and N64 games were quite different (I preferred n64).

Ninja Gaiden 4

Especially on higher difficulty. Fastest combat I've ever played, and is fucking brutal and awesome

Another +1 for Zone mode in Wipeout HD/Omega Collection, I was playing it last night and once you get locked in its amazingly satisfying to zoom around the track getting faster and faster, only having to manage steering and braking and little else

Q.U.B.E 1&2
I was looking for the opposite of brutally fast. I wanted a slow paced (my pace) puzzle game and heard about these.
Turns out these games require really fast twitch response to manipulate the cubes. I had to give up. :(
