I'm having a family member fly over to Tokyo during christmas week so I've been browsing through hotels. Unfortunately it seems to me that any of the nice hotels want about 30000yen a night for that week >_< Now since it is a family member rather than just a friend, I want to put them in a pretty good hotel (not a business hotel), but I'd really like to find one that's around 15000yen a night.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

What area of Tokyo are you focusing on?

Probably somewhere around the downtown area. So we can go do stuff until late night and then just walk back to the hotel.

personally, I love Sunshine Prince Ikebukuro. It was around 7800yen per night when I was there two years ago. Below the hotel is a mall, Sunshine City, lots of shops and restaurants, and it's close to Ikebukuro station, it's easy to travel in Japan. There is a SEGA club right outside the hotel too, and please please try their okonomiyaki(??) that's just beside CLUB SEGA, it's one of the BEST Japanese food I've ever eaten. YOu will know where it is cos almost everyday, there is always long lines.
Enjoy your stay, and yes I envy you. I wish I can go to Japan too.

ahh, there is also a Bus that goes directly to and from the airport.

That's my recommendation, but I am not from Japan, probably someone in Japan will recommend you a better one.

I didn't stay there (could have, but chose a more dormitory-like place) when I was taking classes this past summer, but the people that stayed at Sunshine city all seemed to like it very much, and it's definitely located in a convenient area. Leaving from there was easy as well, with the airport limousine bus service, but getting TO Sunshine City with my incredibly heavy duffel bag did suck. :)

Bebpo, how's JET working out for you?

Ikebukuro is awesome! With a little bit of searching you can find some awesome used game stores with super cheap bemani stuff. There's also an amazing arcade a few blocks from the station with some new Virtual-On game and linked Drum Mania/Guitar Freaks. Man, I spent too much money there :(

I stayed in Shinjuku Prince Hotel, which is a 5 minute walk from Shinjuku station. I also liked the fact that an internet cafe was right in front of it.

I stayed in an apartment for nothing for 2 weeks, I'm a spoiled house guest. My friend(whose japanese)'s parents rented the 2 of us a 3 bedroom apartment for the 2 weeks I was visiting for. I mean his brother moved in afterwards but it was a sweet deal.

It was right next to shin ureyasu station to boot.

By the way, I was in Japan during Christmas week too. The price was 7800yen, but I stayed there for like 3 weeks or so, it was suppose to get more pricier during the christmas holiday and the new years, but they keep my price to 7800yen per night. :)
Internet sucks to find deals on Hotels, I think, try one of those travel agencies in Chinatown. If you book directly from Sunshine Prince, it'll be around 12000yen to 15000yen a night. If you are in Seattle, I can recommend you a travel agency that will give you a good offer.
Just to let you know, in case you don't know this, Ikebukuro and Shinjuku is quite far. Ikebukuro is at the end of the line, and Shijuku is almost at the other end, but the whole trip won't take you more than one hour. Ginza, Tokyo, Akihabara and Ginza are between the two lines. I hope my memory is still as good, since I was there almost 3 years ago...hehe. It also takes about 1-2 hours to DIsneyLand, and I think you only need to change 2 or 3 lines.
Hmm there is this hotel just outside of Shinjuku, JAL CITY, you can walk 10-15 minutes to Shinjuku. THe hotel is nice, and the receptionist was pretty hot, she can speak good English too. I didn't have any reservation with them, I just came over and reserve a place for a few days, I think the price was below 15000yen. It probably will be a lot cheaper if you book from a travel agent.
So good luck, let me know if you need anything.
