Hey

Just wondering if anyone has some advice on a good capture codec to use for VHS? I originally did some a year or so ago, but let it go for awhile. I was originally using Photo JPG, but the file sizes are huge and maybe overkill.

What I want is a high quality codec to archive old home movies that will be somewhat future proofed and can be easily dropped into FCP or dropped down to DVD.

Apple Pro Res is something I have seen on other forums etc, but I am still unsure. I mean the footage isn't the cleanest anyway, but capturing to H.264 gives me problems if I need to drop it into FCP and has to render a lot.

Thanks.

If future-proofing is a big thing, I'd stick with H264 or some other VERY popular codec otherwise you'll be re-encoding at some point and downgrading the quality at some point in the future. Almost all of the ones that are incredibly space efficient are lossy, so just do it once in a good enough format.

Record at high bitrate H.264 unless you have a lot of hard drive space. If the latter you can use something with less compression, but you're going to eat drive space like a mofo.

Yeah, I was thinking Pro Res 422 LT so it can be cut up easily in FCP.

Maybe do that, then I can re-encode for H.264 for TV playback and also send the Pro Res files to DVD Studio Pro to make disks.

Hm..
