You make a valid, interesting point... however i do believe MS will release an Xbox One w/o kinect... if not at launch then maybe by next thanksgiving...

If MS puts the Kinect in the box by default at launch, it's going to stay in the box for the life of the console. The only thing worse for their "development partners" than not including it by default would be if they pulled it 6-12 months into the console cycle.

Yeah I was warned about the forum leaning to one side over the other and making me a junior as a result confirmed that reputation.

Perhaps the content or tone of your posts contributed on that? There's no bias here, during the last generational transition Gaf was pretty much against Sony. You reap what you sow.

Perhaps the content or tone of your posts contributed on that?

Yes it was the tone. Using point form is bad form right?

What evidence do you have to come towards this conclusion?

Wrote a massive post about it. It's all in point form and easy to read. Someone posted a link here.

Too bad it was locked there were a few more things we can add to it.

But it's pretty neat how Sony put their egos aside and just went with what worked. MS did a lot of good stuff this last generation and a lot of bad stuff and Sony made sure they did all the good stuff.

A lot of people in this place are very defensive about Sony so maybe they took it as an attack. Pretty sad but hey people are weird.

Is the PS4 another case of Sony playing catchup with Microsoft?

Is the PS4 another case of Sony playing catchup with Microsoft? #1
Was discussing this with some buddies some who are in the industry a few months ago.

The discussion came up again after the PS4 reveal.

The kicker was the new controller...but it started years ago when Microsoft came up with standard hard drives with every console.

Then Xbox Live Arcade on the first Xbox...Sony had to catch up on the PS3 and offer the same.

Then built in internet connectivity. So we saw those in the PS3.

Then with the 360 we saw Achievements. Sony had to play catchup and come up with Trophies.

The whole downloading while the console is off...Sony had to catch up and add that.

MS made their online store accessible on PCs so you can buy stuff from your computer. Sony then did it too after a few years I think.

MS packed in headsets with every console because they thought it was important for online play. Now PS4 will have built-in mics on the controllers...obviously they agree with MS. Hoping its for voice commands too.

For the past year there were rumors that you could record gameplay on the new Xbox and how you can on the PS4 too. Only 15 minutes of it but Sony saw the value in that idea.

Rumors of playing Xbox games on your tablets and other devices...we're seeing that on the PS4.

MS came up with Kinect and its rumored to come with every nextgen Xbox...now we're seeing something very very similar for the PS4 built into every PS4.

You can control your Xbox with tablets and phones...surprise-surprise you can do it now on the PS4.

Indies could make cheap games and sell them for a dollar on the Xbox. Now you can on the PS4 too.

On the 360 you can talk to people even if they're playing different games and now you can on the PS4.

The analog sticks look ridged like the 360 controller.

Triggers look like actual triggers. MS wasn't the first but Sony should have copied the Sega Saturn as saw it as the way to go when MS did. Sony finally caught up there.

Sony didn't say it but the PS4 will probably have voice control.

MS has done their fair share of copying...their controller is like the Dreamcasts and Avatars are Nintendo Miis. MS from Nintendo. Nintendo from Sony. Happens every which way. The thing is MS have done a lot more leading of Sony than playing catchup. MS needs to play catchup to Sony in some ways too. Built in batteries in controllers anyone? Support for common USB controllers like racing wheels...I can think of a few things.

Point is that Sony obviously sees value in what MS is doing for the most part and is catching up constantly.

Don't get me wrong we all agree that Sony has a history of making hardware that pushes technology and makes gaming better that way. PSX and PS2 were some of the best machines out there and have sold hundreds of millions of units because they let developers create these worlds with their graphics hardware.

Then you have MS who seems to be the one that makes the best software for that hardware. They have really made console online gaming very convenient when compared to PC gaming ten years ago. All of these features I listed are MS initiatives that has changed gaming forever. Hate it myself but "Gamerscore" is something that is relevant because of their vision. Cross game chat is beautiful. Where Sony has the engineers to make great hardware MS has the right vision for all the features.

So the PS4 really just seems to be catching up to the Xbox and the rumored Nextbox features that came out a while ago. Its a good thing...obviously. But at the same time why do we need 2 machines that do pretty much the same thing?

No I said that Sony followed MS's lead when building the PS4.

Now that you've seen both machines you can line up here and tell me I was right. :)

Yeah I was warned about the forum leaning to one side over the other and making me a junior as a result confirmed that reputation.

This is terrible. Neogaf needs to look into playing victim and ban posters that do that.

LOL, got a ban because I was "instigating" console war, and insulting Sony "advocates" with the word "fanboy" yet last few months all "Xbone" bullshit are all fairgame.

Let's downplay a feature which is confirmed by a dev because is not in the platform we are championing!

I'm pretty transparent in my interest in getting an Xbox One when Titanfall releases and I can safely say that I'm downplaying it because it is a joke to think that a company that was working THAT hard to funnel used sales into a very strict path that provided revenue for publishers was going to allow 10 people to play one copy of game to completion for free.

Can anyone who believes this is a real thing even remotely back up the logic here? I'm a rational adult and I respond extremely well to reason.

You are very wrong to assume that Sony is playing catch up. In fact this post is filled with a whole lot of wrong. The only thing correct is Sony playing catch up on the online side. Kinect is an evolution of PlayStation eye introduced by Sony during the ps2 era. Sony already had voice control software before Microsoft even dreamed of putting it in the 360. Microsoft is responsible for the revolution in the online side of gaming. To suggest that ideas and features are simply exclusive to one company is completely rubbish. The goal of the software is to add value to their product and ideas for the software is normally gotten from user feedback. At this moment in time, it seems Microsoft is the one playing catch up because of how unprepared they are.

Btw, the controller has a built in speaker and not a built in Mic. Microsoft is not packing a Mic with the Xbox one. The ps2 had mics for socom. You should really do some research before posting.

So, many things wrong in this post while others are just assumptions. "The analog sticks look ridged like the 360 controller." Seriously?

Well yes, it looks like Sony plays catch up a lot. Especially if your if your facts are outright wrong (microphone was never included with every Xbox 360, neither was a hard drive). Or if if you don't even consider the ways Microsoft has had to catch up:

360 shipped without WiFi support or HDMI support. It shipped without support for either HD video format (BluRay or HD-DVD). Initial hard drives had a pretty paltry amount of storage space (like 13GB).

360 shipped without any support for motion controls, and once Kinect finally came out almost all of the software was pretty much pale imitations of Wii titles.

Everyone is always playing catch up with certain features that competitors introduce. Except Nintendo, who simply just seems to hate the idea of every chasing competitors.

The only thing you forgot to mention is that finally the Xbone is catching up to the PS3 launch price.

Forgot I can browse Desktop GAF on Mobile, so here are my thoughts regarding CBOAT's E3 predictions.

I'll most likely respond to any replies later today at home, 30% now :P Need to keep my phone alive for the hour long road trip. I'm not avoiding or ignoring anyone or anything, letting that be known.

I gather it's not because it's in point form, But rather the one-sideness of your post and how most of it was hearsay/MS was "rumored" to do this and Sony is copying it thing.

I mean, just read your entire thing again. It just reeked of someone clutching at straws and trying to make an argument when you've already made a decision. And putting in "games industry" people does NOT make that post better, but rather makes it seem like you are seeking validation or how "the cool kids at school are saying this" spiel.

Just my 2 cents. But to say you got "juniored" because GAF is exclusively pro-Sony is ridiculous. If so,every Xbone fan should have been juniored by now.

LOL, got a ban because I was "instigating" console war, and insulting Sony "advocates" with the word "fanboy" yet last few months all "Xbone" bullshit are all fairgame.

Yep, that sounds like it..

In the uk it costs more than ps3 ever has.

Just got linked the AMA, wait kinect costs almost as much as the console itself,to make???.

I guess Kinect 2.0 has it's own processor unlike the original which was the reason the original had slow sometimes inaccurate tracking.

Kinect 2 is 250+, whereas the new pseye is 60. LOL

Let's face it, whether we like Kinect or not, the PSeye is dwarfed by the tech in that camera 9kinect). It's magnitudes better considering the amount of research and development it got, the question is will it get the kind of appeal MS is looking for with mainstream buyers and will it be able to offer unique gameplay to core gamers. Not at $499..

There's no chance the sensor is above $200. The beta for the "kinect2 for windows" SDK is $400, it includes two sensors + software + support, and there's no reason they would sell it at a loss. It's unlikely that the software is free either, for reference, the "kinect1 for windows" costs $250, while the kinect for xbox was $150.

I just came back from a ban because I said that online polls couldn't be trusted. Mods thought I was dissing SONY which I wasn't. I was talking about from all sides.

It isn't. Keep in mind that the PS4 and XboxOne have almost identical architecture and capability, and Sony isn't known for building huge margins into their console hardware (as nintendo is).

There is NO WAY for Microsoft to sell at a price less than the PS4 without kinect, without taking massive losses per unit.

I was just going by the information in this thread. If kinect costs as much to make as the xbox one itself than surely there is at least $100 of savings to be had there.

Similar thing for me, most anti Xbox comments are overlooked from my experience. Normally GAF is very well balanced and fair with regards to consoles, but that seems to have changed ever since Wii U hit the market.

It was probably y2kev or bishoptl. Prove me wrong.
M0dus or Nirolak (at least in the Gaming side) have shown the most tolerance and accountability.

No more game sharing between two consoles. One console will be designated as "Home Machine", where every content can be accessed also by other users. However, you'll be able to reach your content on other PS4's, but only using your own credentials.

The reduction of number of activated consoles is not being mentioned on the
"PS4′s digital library lets you play your games anywhere & on anyone’s console" thread OP ( http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=619311 ) , not sure if it was mentioned elsewhere within those pages

That's why either there has to be a new proper thread that details this new system, or the OP should update the original post, this is quite important!

It's mentioned a lot in the thread. If you want the OP updated you could post in the thread or PM the creator of the thread instead of posting here.

Thanks, just did. The link to that thread was provided by another poster in response to my post about the change, that's why I added an explanation about why there's a "direct" thread about the reduction in my previous post.

There's no chance the sensor is above $200....

That's kind of what I was getting at. I don't really care for the Kinect or Kinect-based games. And I would like it if MS would quit trying to push it on us gamers. I would have pre-ordered the XBO if I would have had the option to purchase it without the Kinect, or if it would have allowed me to use my current Kinect.

But yes there is no way Kinect 2.0 cost as much as the console. That's just silly. Unless the AMA guys was talking about R&D and such.

That's kind of what I was getting at.

Oh right my bad, I understand your message better now. I'm getting very bad at detecting sarcasm, with all the silly messages I've been reading on Neogaf lately. I thought yours was one of them, sorry. ;)
Although since the technology is different, it may very probably be more expensive than the PS4 camera. But not that expensive.

I play games. You play companies.
I don't know if that statement was borrowed or if it is originaaal.

What I do know is the above comment is a well place incision, by scalpel, to the heart of all of the good folks in the gaming community. Myself not excluded.

Well typed Amir0x!

Lot's of fascinating commentary in this thread . . .

Anyway, I hope what he said about the cost of Kinect 2 isn't true. What an absolutely travesty if it is.
