rediscovering gba

hyperbolically metafictive
i've hardly touched my gba sp since i got my psp. it suddenly started to feel like a decades-old relic. the screen induced physical revulsion. i still play my nes regularly, but the gba had somehow become offensive. this afternoon i had a particularly futile session of wipeout pure (i think i hit every single wall on the second rapier beta track, and was on pace to finish seventh when i exploded), after which i didn't even feel like looking at my psp. so i decided to dig out the gba. the greyed-out colors and tinny sound made me want to turn it off. so i turned it off. but then i turned it on again and suppressed the desire to turn it off. and you know what: bubble bobble is still way fun. i think i'm going to play some advance guardian heroes.

Tonight will be the last time I touch my SP. Sorry Nintendo, you screwed up when you delayed Wario Ware Twisted

i hope you're joking.

gba-bubble_bobble_oan_x3.jpg

edit: i mean i hope monk is joking. i don't care whether wario is joking. i'm not buying wario ware twisted either.

Since I have stuff I haven't beaten on GBA, I think I'll still break out the SP at some point. The games are great...even if the technical thrill be will totally blown after the PSP comes out.

you've never played or even heard of bubble bobble? in the arcade or on nes? forget gba: this thread has become something more serious: it's occurred to me that there are people who've never played bubble bobble. bubble bobble is awesome. bubble bobble is the life and the soul. for the love of god: go play bubble bobble.

I just started playing Car Battler Joe this weekend, and it has rekindled my love for the GBA. Mode 7 car fightin' & a rockin' Yozo Koshiro soundtrack. Can't wait to play some more tonight...

And then play Rainbow Islands.

Is that an accurate port of the arcade version? I loved Bubble Bobble on the PC when I was a wee lad. If that's an accurate port of the arcade version, then I need it.

I havent heard og the GBA version.

false alarm then.

and yeah, the gba version contains an accurate port of the arcade version as well as a version with HIDEOS new graphics. initially i stayed away from the new version, but the music is less irritating, and i like the way it tracks all the items you've collected. so now i play the new version. grudgingly.

Shit, I can't find it on Play-Asia. That means I'll have to dig deeper, and I'm too lazy for that now.

it was released in the us as well. i think it came out in the us first, actually. that might be easier to find than the japanese version.

I don't mind the new graphics so much in Bubble Bobble: Old and New. I mean, I don't like the style anywhere near as much as in the original arcade version, but I kind of got used to this style with my old Bubble Bobble 2 cart.

I bought my copy at K-Mart. I can't imagine it's that hard to find.

Handheld gaming pretty much died for me in 1998 and 1999. By then I finally had a home console, and I didn't play the GB/C a whole lot except for Pokemon, Wario Land, or Mario Golf. When the GBPlayer was released, I played the majority of my GBA titles on that. Metroid Fusion was perhaps the only title I played through and really enjoyed just on the ol' GBA.

Ah, if that's the case, I'll go check the local EB and Wal-Mart tomorrow then. Thanks for the info.

bubble bobble old & new is wonderful. well, except for the new part sucking pretty hard. otherwise, what a great little compilation. it's nice to have one of my favorite games with me whenever i go. personally, it'd be nice to have a psp version so i can see the screen properly, but that's just me being picky.

Guys.......you're not gonna believe what I just did.

I just went to the swapmeet bargain bins area and picked up the following GBA games:

1)Super Mario Kart
2)Donkey Kong Country
3)StreetFighter II Revival
4)Top Gear GT Racing
5)F1 2002 Racing
6)Punch King
7)Wario Ware
8)Guilty Gear X
9)King of Fighters EX
10)Zelda The Swedish Cap

ALL FOR TEN BUCKS EACH!!!!!!('cept for The Swedish Cap)

Bought these DESPITE having the money for a PSP and having a promotional PSP flyer being displayed in my fucking FACE! I'm not buying a PSP because I need the money for my $4500 laptop! And get this.....I STILL haven't bought a SINGLE DS game for my DS! I bought my DS STRICTLY to play GBA games!

NOW who's the fucking hardcore GBA fan of old school 2D games????????????? :D

ahh, minish cap :P we don't even have it in aus yet! despite it being released in europe/uk/us/japan already

i've gone back and rediscovered heaps of my old GBA stuff now that i have the DS to play on the sweet screen - metroid fusion is a great game, i've already played through it twice and im on my third play through, cos i missed so much stuff. i bought a stack of games for the GBA in the US, and im going through and slowly playing those (fire emblem, astro boy, megaman zero 2 (which i suck at) and a few others. apart from meteos, the DS is getting little to no playtime. there's some stuff on the horizon, but i'm very tempted to turf it on ebay and get a psp instead. but i can see myself in the same position after the novelty wears off (if ever) :P

I have also used my DS to rediscover the GBA - in between quick plays of wario ware touched and Yoshi touch and go (which are two perfect games to play a bit during commercials while watching tv) I have picked up

Advance Wars 2
Mario and Luigi
Super Mario World
Wario Land 4

games finally playable on a decent screen...

Heathens. GBA will never die.

i still own an (a?) sp :p which is why my DS only has its backlit screen going for it as a reason to keep it. i want mario kart - but the hopes of it being online are fading. don't mean to derail the thread :P but yeah, no way i'll ever get rid of my gba. i play it all the time! and after discovering fire emblem it's gonna get even more playtime :D

Dont forget Reevera coming in April :D

The SP screen doesn't cut it for me either after playing GBA games on the DS.

I've only played Bubble Bobble on the NES aside from Old & New. Is Old & New more true to the arcade release? A few of the levels are different from the NES version, and you're unable to bubble yourself out of pits that are only as wide as yourself.

I cannot wait for Bubble Bobble Revolution on the DS, whatever the hell it turns out to be. I'm hoping it includes arcade ports of all the other BBs.

I put far and away the most playtime into my GBA this generation out of all the systems. I dunno, I just love 2D. I have 3 of them + a GBPlayer and a DS =\

GBA is my favorite system this gen, and it will take a lot for PSP or DS to change that. There are too many games on the system that I consider to be just shy of perfect. I even prefer it too the SNES, which is quite a feat for a system. I just finished Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and AstroBoy and couldn 't be happier with the system. I still have the original GBA, never bothered to upgrade to an SP or a DS, and the screen looks fine. I play on the GameBoy Player when I'm at home, and it's the only reason I've used my Cube ro like a year.

Fancy graphics, 3D, and high res screens be damned, GBA has the games that are fun. They're the perfect length for me to get into without being absorbed, and are great for quick bursts of play. GBA is king

TRUTH. Just sold off that DS and got my good ol' SP back with Astro Boy free. I miss the crisper screen and the wider dimensions of the DS but that's about it. Having never owned a SNES all the ported games hit the spot. The system has a TON of awesome games out for it and I really hope that Nintendo and other developers don't abandon it for flashier graphics.

GBA still rocks. I no longer have a GBA SP or a DS to play games on, but I still like break out games for sessions on the GB Player.

I need to play Minish Cap, come to think of it...

It came out in Japan about two years earlier than the U.S. version did. Never understood what took them so long to release it. :)

GBA is definitely my favorite system this generation... been playing games on it nonstop, and the best thing about DS is the way it makes GBA games look :D

I've played BB on my Spectrum.. or was it C64? Don't remember the platform but the music was kick-ass. And the big bonus fruits. Awesome little game.

I've rediscovered GBA as well. I never thought I would, but I actually picked up a DS last week. I've been away from the handheld scene for a couple of years now...I sold my GBA in preparation for picking up a GBA SP. But I didn't feel the urge to get an SP when it was released, so I just skipped it altogether (I've never even played on a GBA SP). But I still saved two of my GBA games, Kuru Kuru Kururin and Advance Wars.

And now, I'm playing these GBA games on my DS. And going from the GBA screen to the DS screen...it's like night and day (literally). I actually found Advance Wars more enjoyable on DS, since I don't get aching shoulders and a twisted neck from playing it in awkward angles anymore. And I've also realized how fun it is, again. A great way to waste a little time here and there. And Kuru Kuru Kururin kicks ass too, of course.

So now, I've been thinking of picking up other GBA games as well...but I'm a bit hesitant since they're so expensive, even the ones with price cuts...at least for an importer like me. Still, I've been considering Fire Emblem...is it really good?

Empire's US branch crumbled. DSI finally picked it up, great game and best of all it only carries a $14.99 MSRP. Everyone buy it now. :)

For a while there, I thought you were serious with "The Swedish Cap"... :lol :lol
You aren't, right? ...

So Bubble Bobble came out in North America and I missed it? :(

Does it have some sort of "power up" code. Although it's probably not the hardcore way to play it, I always prefered starting powered up, 'cause I'm a wimp and it's the way I first played the game...

You can still find it probably, DSI gets pretty good circulation and it just came out last fall. I saw it at Best Buy a few weeks ago.

Yep, Power Up mode is still in there for both Old and New versions.

I've suppressed the desire to invest in 5, 10, or 15 year old technology unless it has a sizeable library and plays on my TV.

I picked up Shining Soul today (kinda late in the game huh?) and now my GBA is tied with my DC for the system with most games at 22 a piece. Poor Dreamycast~it had a good run at the top but Emerald will push the GBA over the top for my most games.

Pfft, you know you'll buy it, and you know you'll be whipping out that SP you put away "forever".

Still gotta finish Fire Emblem, and buy Zelda, WWT, and FEII.
