Reggie talks Revolution

I believe this deserves it's own thread. It doesn't reveal anything groundbreaking, but some interesting points.(nice jab at 360 :lol ) Here is a snippet:

Fils-Aime: The next-generation console from Nintendo, code-named Revolution, will cost less than $300. Our third resolution is to stop turning away new players.

Q: How many launch titles will there be for the Revolution?

Fils-Aime: That question's a bit premature. We'll be showing a lot of titles at this year's E3, and we think that's where consumers will get a flavor for the full range of titles and the full range of activity that we will have for our launch window.

Q: And what is the launch date?

Fils-Aime: We've said 2006.

Q: What else will set the Revolution apart from the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3?

Fils-Aime: A number of things. First, our titles. We have the huge luxury of a stable of franchises that's unparalleled in this industry. Also, we're working on new franchises and our first-party lineup will be better than our competition. We're also getting strong third-party support.

Secondly, our virtual console concept, which lets you play your favorite games from the Nintendo 64, Super NES and NES systems, will also be a differentiator. Plus, Revolution will be backwardly compatible with GameCube games.

Q: How do you think Revolution will sell?

Fils-Aime: We will sell more units than Xbox 360 did here in the United States in our launch window. I mean, in December we sold more GameCubes in the United States than Microsoft sold 360s, and Revolution will do better than that.

"Also, we're working on new franchises"

This is the part I'm most curious about... they said this for the Gamecube too, and I don't recall any new franchises springing up.

OH SNAP! :lol

He didn't even mention Japanese sales.

I foresee Revolution being the hottest Christmas gift in '06.

Unless of course PS3 also launches, then x360 will just fade away into history.

It's a win win situation for Nintendo and Sony.

I'd rather hear down-to-earth PR like the kind the dude who just quit gave.
Still, it's nice to know we'll be seeing a lot of titles at E3.

I expect a lot of mini-game crap.

None of these machines are fading into history... until about 5 years from now

I am glad I didn't expect that. Waiting is the name of the game.

It's just that each time there is a new "xxx talks about revolution" thread, there won't be anything significantly new.

I don't think we'll be getting mini-games at E3 or when the Revolution launches.

The general third party developers have a year to work on software for the system before it launches, much more time they did with the DS.

because Nintendo rarley give away a lot in interviews unless it's E3.

Finally, can you tell me how Nintendo will reverse the perception that the console market is Sony and Microsoft and then Nintendo?
Fils-Aime: The fact is this: On a worldwide basis in the home console area, we are the No. 2 player

..............

If MS can spew crap about lucid dreams and becoming market leader and Sony can claim they sold 10 million PSP units, I think Reggie has the right to claim 2nd place.

It's inevitable!

Pikmin

I guess I forgot Pikmin because it hasn't been exploited all to fuck yet. :lol

But 1 is not franchiseS. Does Odama even count?

A game (and a sequel) with recognizable characters isn't a franchise?

PS: And gamecube will be 2nd, since the xbox 1 sells like shit at the moment.

Tell me about the controller. What makes it noteworthy?
Fils-Aime: It allows you to essentially manipulate the game by pointing at it. The activity that happens in the game is quite responsive with the controller, and we've shown that sports games can be brought to a new level of immersion with the controller.

How so?
Fils-Aime: It allows you to manipulate not only a puck or a football, but also to manipulate the player in a way that's never been done before. So if I'm developing a football game, I can move across the field, focus against a particular receiver with pinpoint accuracy and throw the ball right to that receiver much as a real-life quarterback does.

That level of immersion really has never been done before. We know it's exciting because we have partners like EA and Ubisoft and Activision and THQ excited about developing for the Revolution.

this statement i like :D

I have no idea what I'm going to do between now and May, its going to be a long wait.

How is the cryogenic suspension process these days? Hopefully they'll have found a way to revive people from it by the time E3 comes around...

Haha, Mario Baseball and Mario Strikers are new franchises.

(It's not like they use an official MARIO SPORTS label)

Too bad Eternal Darkness didn't turn into a franchise :(

Are you being serious? :lol

I mean, I know this is every Nintendo fanboy dream, but I didn't think anyone actually believed it. You're an idiot if you believe that.

Some it wasn't so relevant this gen, the Pikmin series was a new franchise from Nintendo. A damn good one too, IMO (especially part 2).

Reggie: Xbox 360 Cannot Compete with Revolution, Gamecube Already Won

Speaking to News.com, Nintendo VP of Marketing and alleged dope smuggler Reggie Fils Amie launched into an attack on Microsoft as well as their next gen console, apparently called the Xbox 360. "No one bought the Xbox 360 due to shortages. This is a fact, and it's sad for some poor Microsoft IT bastard's family, but frankly that's not my problem. The Revolution will sell more than one unit in the US. That's all we need to win." Reggie went further, claiming "even the Gamecube outsold the Xbox 360 during Christmas. That's a damn shame."

Reggie also answered questions concerning Nintendo's plans for their next gen system the Revolution. "We have a great system, and it's based on innovation because history has taught us that graphics do not matter to consumers. The majority of American households prefer standard TV visuals over HD; very few houses even have TVs that support HD. Clearly families don't care about next gen visuals, and neither do we." With regards to the Revolution's innovative controller, Reggie envisioned new games only capible through the controller. "If I want to play a game where I use a giant eraser to erase Bill Gate's name, I can do that on the Revolution. The PS3 is not capible of doing this, and developers are excited."

Many continue to question whether the Revolution will have good third party support. Reggie responded to these claims, saying "we already have the third parties. Many people are worried about billion dollar budgets for PS3 and 360 games, and the Revolution solves this. It's like White Castle really. Why eat at Wendy's or McDonalds when you can get the same service at White Castle for cheap? I truly believe the Revolution will be the next gen White Castle."

When asked about the DS vs PSP battle, Reggie was unapologetic. "The DS has outsold the PSP 2 to 1 across the universe. I don't think the PSP is competition either. In fact, I personally wrote Ken Kutaragi last night thanking him for making the PSP. The DS needed a bitch."

Above: Reggie Fils Amie gives Revolution specs, saying the Revolution's graphical power will be "this big."

What's funny is that I can actually imagine Reggie (caricature extraordinaire) saying that.

Our focus for Nintendo Revolution is to provide real meaningful differentiators versus our competition, and we believe that is what will drive our success. First, focusing on a single-minded gaming device. Second, bringing real innovation to the controller in the way consumers play the game. Third, a value orientation that certainly is not present with our competitors. And fourth, leveraging the power of our library with the virtual consoles.

They need to start drilling this into everyone's heads at E3 and build the hype right up until launch. They really need a Mario 64 type launch title that everyone is talking about and they will need kiosks everywhere at least a month before launch.

Where's Drohne to pick this apart?

In all seriousness, that's the best interview Reggie's given. The only thing he could've/should've done is emphasize in a bit more clear language how radically different the controller is, and twisted the knife a bit further by making the claim that GameCube nearly outsold Xbox and 360 combined in December

Still looking forward to the Revolution, wonder if they'll ever get any clear-cut positive press.

I'm willing to bet Mario Fantasy Football League is a launch or near-launch title.

They would NOT go through all this trouble of "demonastrating" how the Revmote would work with sports (specifically, they've mentioned football SEVERAL times) without utilizing that time and energy for their own development.

They probably came up with some rude graphics and physics for some demos to show EA that it's possible for Madden 2007, but are secretly using all those resources toward launching their own football game.

Hell, it's a new franchise.
It's a sports title.
It uses the Revmote.
It's innovative.
and it's MARIO.

.... everything Nintendo wants to do.
