remember Dolphin's rumored motion-sensory controllers and the Star Road Network?

back in 1999 and leading upto Space World 2000 unvieling of Gamecube, there was a great deal of rumor, speculation, reports, etc about Dolphin. the Dolphin was supposedly going have some sort of sensory and/or motion controller, not the more conventional controller the Gamecube got. there were even mock-up pictures of such a controller. Also, just before all was revealed at Space World 2000, the name of the console was reported to be Star Cube and Nintendo was said to have this 'Star Road' Network, an online gaming network, for Dolphin/Star Cube. the name 'Star Road' for the online network obviously comes from the maps in some of the Super Mario Bros games, most notably, Super Mario World / SMB4. people were truly excited about Dolphin/Star Cube before Gamecube was unvieled.

I think some of us were quite disappointed in Gamecube's unvieling. there was no radical motion/sensory controller. no Star Road network, lower than expected horsepower, lower amount of memory, etc. even though things like Metroid, Zelda and Waverace demos/fmvs were pretty exciting.

the Dolphin was supposed to have at least 64 MB of memory and possibly more, according to most of the websites covering Dolphin, including IGN. as well as a larger amount of embedded memory than PS2's 4 MB on GS. Dolphin was supposed to have 8-16 MB on Flipper.

well, I believe that maybe, alot of the more ambitious plans that were thought to be part of the Dolphin / Star Cube strategy, will make it into Revolution. otherwise, it could be bye-bye Nintendo in the console arena. online especially, is now becoming essential.

among other things, Revolution should have the following

*some sort of motion/sensory/touch controller, or method of controlling games
*an online network ala the reported Star Road Network for Dolphin. including Nintendo's alternative to AOLhell. exclusive chat rooms, webpages, newsgroups/boards, mail, IM, etc.
*lots of embedded memory for fast effecient low-latency processing, ease of development, predicable performance and ultimately, gameplay for the consumer.

So we can have one stupid game that'll make use of it? cough cough N64 microphone, 64dd, almost everything that nintendo has made, cough cough...

Sorry.

What, like the rumble feedback or the analogue control stick? Or the simple shoulder buttons/ 4 diamond buttons that seems to be used widely by both Sony and Microsoft today?

They may have made some shitty products, but they did define certain characteristics about gaming today.

I'm almost certain the Revolution will have controls with motion sensors in. After all, they wanted to put it in the DS but it was making the tech cost too much.

Motion sensor controllers and a camera (nothing new abotu a camera, but having it packed in with every system should lead to much wider usage so I think Nintendo will do it) are my guesses for the Revolution's additions. Other stuff too maybe, we'll see.

Hopefully they'll go with a regular 4 button layout next time. As much as I like the GC controller, it doesn't need to be different. There was nothing wrong with the 4-button layout. Someone should tell Nintendo if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Honestly going on a few things that iwata has hinted at regarding the Revolution and the DS I feel like the next controller will have either a touch pad or (even better) some sort of touch screen built-in. Maybe if they can get a good deal on screens and memory.

yeah it was cut out of DS, officially. I strongly believe it was cut out of Dolphin/Gamecube controllers, also. one way or another.
