Five years ago today, two explosions rocked the White House and President Barack Obama was injured, according to the Associated Press’s Twitter account. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.45% immediately plunged and the S&P 500 SPX, -0.73% was reported to have lost $136.5 billion in market cap.
Of course, it was a fake. Except for the part about the wrenching market reaction. That was all too real. Barry Ritholtz of Ritholtz Wealth Management commemorated that hectic session by tweeting this graphic on Monday morning:
As you can see, the massive selloff was a short-lived blip as the AP scrambled to say it had been hacked and with the White House press secretary Jay Carney quickly reassuring everyone that “the president is fine.”
Within the span of just six minutes, sanity had been restored and stocks got back to their winning ways as the FBI, Secret Service and SEC kicked off investigations into the tweet. A group calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army, a backer of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, would ultimately claim responsibility for the hack.
Totally forgot about this story. But ya, wasn't this Banes plan in the Dark Knight? Hack the stock market and essentially crash it?
