not to sound callous but the whole 'wise man learns from others mistakes a fool learns from their own' applies to everything in life. i'm curious is all, and it's pretty surprising for me to see people who are kinda misguidedly white knighting the situation except against people passing baseless judgments.

Ah I see. Holding back the information can kind of make you wonder though. But then his father did say natural causes. I'm not sure of how many ways that can be interpreted though. Of course everyone wants to know, even if they don't admit it.

If there weren't already a hundred years of case studies available and several entire professions devoted to learning and publishing this data from a wide array of (and this is the important part) willing test subjects, you might have a point.

Go take a class. Go read a book. There is literally nothing you can learn here other than satiating your own curiosity and annoying people by coming off as a whiny, prying, entitled twit.
 
I'm not going to go back and read 120 some pages of post to see what ideas people have come up with as to a cause of death.

I'm just going to put out there that there's a thread on GB pointing to various posts by Ryan leading up to his passing that imply that he was having really bad issues with his Sleep Apnea. And that he passed away in his sleep due to lack of oxygen. Nothing official from his family other that the Twitter post from is father that has already been posted here.
 
I can't tell if binging on all of these Quick Looks the past few days has made everything better or worse. I still feel just as shitty about the situation as when I first heard

Now that the bombardment of requests has lightened up, I would love a ribbon on my avatar if anyone is still doing them.

I don't particularly care how he died; it doesn't change the fact that he's gone. I wouldn't turn down the info if his family and friends decided we should know, but I'm perfectly happy to be left in the dark on this one. It's just not important to me.

There's something else, too. Death strikes in the most random ways. People in good shape and the best of health sometimes keel over in their sleep, and in some ways that's worse--when it's a drug addiction or sleep apnea or a stroke or cancer, at least it's something you can point to and say, that was the thing. That was the thing you could prevent in your own life, or stop in other people's lives, or even something that's sad and inevitable but at least you can deal with it. How do you deal with a completely random event that takes someone away from you? I couldn't even begin to tell you.

I wonder if maybe that's a small reason why people want to know--not out of a prurient desire to dig up some hidden scandal, or to confirm their beliefs about how Ryan lived his life, but just because the only thing more unsettling than not knowing what killed him is knowing that nothing at all was the reason Ryan is gone from so many people's lives.

do what? maybe people learn differently from the way you choose best for you, just relax. as for science, let me know when they figured out how to diagnose a concussion properly let alone sleep apnea. and if it were sleep apnea he would be the first i've heard of, leaving me concerned about my quality of sleep and if i should seek a sleep study.

They are probably going to prioritize the autopsy of the guy down the street that got brutally murdered over guy who died in his sleep. Even if an autopsy was done, it often takes weeks or months to get a report back. Then there's toxicology screens and everything. All you need to know is that the death certificate probably reads death of natural causes. That should comfort you.

The reason why most celebrieties' causes of death are known is because they are usually obvious. You don't need to do an autopsy to determine that, say, Curt Kobain blew his head off.

The guy died of natural causes. Unless a death involves foul play or something nefarious, we have no right to know what caused it. I'd just say respect the privacy of his friends and family. It's not something they should have to release or let other people know unless they want to.

I've been hesitant to post this even though it's crossed my mind several times because I know speculation surrounding his death was being frowned upon, and not without reason. That said, I do believe many people quite naturally cannot achieve full closure without some manner of explanation, some sense of what might have caused this. Sometimes we never get that and have to deal with it. That may be the case with Ryan's death. Natural causes is not an explanation, only an assertion that no particular external event appeared to have contributed. Sometimes it's the closest to an explanation that can be achieved. I did not know Ryan personally nor do I know his family, so I have nothing more concrete to offer. However, if you'll indulge me in one bout of speculation, the suddenness of his passing and the fact that it is listed as natural suggests he died of an arrhythmia. This is essentially when the heart suddenly starts beating erratically and can no longer pump blood efficiently. Certain conditions can put you at greater risk of arrhythmia; obstructive sleep apnea, which Ryan appears to have suffered from, is one such condition.

Again, this is just speculation on my part and I apologize if such speculation upsets anyone. Like all of you, I'm shocked at Ryan's passing and wish only peace to those affected by his passing. The above is only one possibility, but it's the one that has helped me make some sense of the ordeal, and I thought perhaps it might help a few others.

And if his cause of death was or wasn't related to that, it would be the tipping point on whether or not you'd go through with it? Give me a break. If it concerns, you, go to a doctor. This single data point will mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of sleep disorder study, and the family obviously aren't interested in releasing the info.

having been the first person i know of, although i'm sure many others have, it certainly would since i share a similar constitution. it's really not bizarre at all, it's not even morbid. it's this hyper sensitive political correctness that has got everyone confused. but hey, it takes all kinds, you do you homie. i'll worry about me.

Political correctness? Do you know what that term even means? We're not all 'afraid' to discuss his death because we're worried about offending people. We just don't need to care - we have been told that it was of natural causes and that's enough.

What's with the obsession of the exact reason anyway? Christ, next thing we'll see is people going through the trash outside of a SF coroner looking for discarded documents O_o

I think he means "thick" as in "not very bright"; it has nothing to do with weight if that's how you're reading into it.

Honestly, this is why I dropped the previous "reason of death" conversation. It seemingly repeatedly derails the conversation, regardless of whether we agree on if it's justified or not. People should really just post their awesome memories of Ryan or thoughts on the guy. Conversations like these are the exact opposite of letting the dude rest in peace.
 
Maybe people should stop worrying about why he died and just enjoy everything he left to keep your spirits up in these sad days after the announcement.

If they wanted to tell you they would otherwise I say drop it. The man and his family deserves some respect after all.

ryan smoked.
ryan was fat.
ryan potentially abused (as in, self-administered in a way that was against "typical" usage) opiates.

these are all things we could plainly see with the naked eye, confirm through anecdotal evidence, or reasonably speculate given his tweets. again, it's not rocket science when you say "i'm just like him" to assume you exhibit similar behaviors.

if you do any combination of the above, stop, because you are quite literally killing yourself.



back on topic: i randomly downloaded a bombcast today from September 2010 just to hear a "normal" episode with the original quartet, removed from any of the most recent events of the past year or so. it feels so...nostalgic and warm.

sarcasm will never carry over the internet which is why its best to remain uptight and pc. i won't mention it again, but the facts are he was a public figure as proven by the amount of coverage he had and with that comes certain issues. some people handle these by getting out front of the speculation to set the narrative and others remain silent forever. personally i'd like my information to remain private also but i have no public profile either.

and that literally ticks all my boxes, since i do smoke/fat/use opiates. and while i'm 29 i can see how fast things fall apart and fragile the human frame is especially now. but then again those traits can be carried on for decades with no sudden outcome. just sad is all, and i do need to change my ways, particularly smoking. next to weed opiates maybe the safest besides overdosing, but far more taxing in terms of addiction..

Someone said it was sleep apnea awhile, but not sure where I picked i up. Don't see the point of arguing against that. Sleep apnea is really a pain in the ass and can eventually be fatal if it messes you up enough, from what I know from people who've had it.

That is in a nutshell what I was about to say. People just want to be able to hold on to some securing or reassuring fact when something as unexpected like this happens because they feel sad AND vulnerable at the same time. At least that is what I went through with my father in January.

Events like these tend to shatter your worldview as well in other words, making you doubtful of almost all things you thought of as being certainties. Knowing how Ryan died doesn't ease the loss, but it might help people carry the weigth of reality again now that everything seems to be on shaky ground. That his work happens to be a strong certainty that helped his fans through other impactful events, probably makes ithe need for such factual security even more powerful.

Political Correctness is the order of the day in todays world. It's basically a cover to not say what is really on ones mind in an effort to not hurt feelings.

I am willing to bet if the family were to release info on how he passed away, almost all the people who said they didn't care would read it. As much of a fan of Ryan many people are, naturally they'll want to know because he passed so suddenly at such a young age of natural causes which is very abnormal.

Death is a terrible thing and many if not all people need some form of closure in order to truly move on. Knowing how a person who suddenly passed, left this earth brings closure to many who were not physical close to Ryan and his family yet were part of the many fans that supported everything he did.

I really and truly don't know how such a staple in the game media industry can be easily let go without closure and I find it hard to believe that many can just do so without pondering how he passed.

From the opinions of many in here, we're to just all of a sudden move on and remember the good times of someone we held near and dear. Doing so - at least for me - just furthers my curiosity because I was a fan of his work and to have him pass so suddenly leaves this air of mystery to a man who was open to letting us into his personal life. It's a trait that built alot of admiration towards him and one that I respected as do many.

I understand the wishes of his family, but people here need to stop jumping down the throats of others who want to know how he passed. They are only asking a simple and honest question thats on their heart and it's not like we're hounding his family for answers. People here tend to bring out the mobs and pitchfork so damn fast that it's a bit ridiculous.

When people start sending all sorts of queries to Ryan's family about his actual death, then by all means burn them on the stake for being disrespectful. But here in a forum where we ask a simple question, calm the hell down a bit.

Dude what? If your recreationally taking opiates stop that shit right away. To even compare it to weed is outlandish and foolish. Hell I'd even refuse taking opiates when prescribed unless in an extreme emergency.

There is no god damned proof of this other than a joking tweet that was later clarified. To suggest he was popping Oxycodone or snorting lines of Xanax is insensitive. Shit I just had a surgery earlier this year and was prescribed Oxycodone. That doesn't mean I'm a pill head.


I'll drop it and I apologize if I've contributed to the derail. We should be remembering Ryan not coming up with conspiracy theories about his personal health.

Just insert a "READ OP BEFORE POSTING".

Say somewhere in the OP that the family have said he has died of natural causes and if you want to play CSI and speculation and be a jerk about it you will be swiftly banned.

I can understand people wanted to know why but some are being dicks about it and I dont think this is the right time or place for that kind of speculation. Its disrespectful and it just makes you look like a dick.

so is he. also, anecdotal. it's proven that obese people have more health complications, up to and including an early death. again, this is not reason to suggest this is WHY ryan died, but it was certainly an unhealthy aspect about him.

Yeah, this is the one small consolation for me. I'm realizing that I have years and years of wonderful video and audio content to enjoy from Ryan.

I mean seriously, just search Giant Bomb on YouTube or "Ryan Davis Gamespot" and go to town. It's great.

Last night and today I'm going through Matrix Online series he and Vinny did for when Sony shut the game down. It's so good. Just countless funny moments and pieces of banter back and forth from both of them. Really a classic piece of content. I remember as an MMO fan really enjoying this and the Star Wars Galaxies special they did when that ended.

Even if it wasn't lortab that he claimed he was crushing and it was in fact Claritin. "Claritin is Oral Dosage Forms That Should Not Be Crushed" :(

We know he had less than 12 hours sleep in the last 3 days. We know he had a machine that assists his sleeping. My dad has the same one, he takes it with him wherever he travels. And that's the end of the speculation anybody in the web has.

We don't know more, and its not worth it to speculate or read inbetween the lines of tweets. If there's more to it than a natural causes death you have to assume with time someone will let that info out.
 
Guys, please stop speculating about the cause of death.

I think it will be very uncomfortable for me if there's an internet thread speculating about the death of people close to me. So I suppose the same thing would apply for Ryan's family and friends too.

Please stop speculating okay ? If they wanted to tell us later on, then so be it. Else it shouldn't matter.


Well unless you really like gossiping behind others, especially others' death, then I can't say anything about it.
