A series of bombs killed at least three people in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Thursday, with shots fired outside a cafe as police moved in, an AFP journalist at the scene said.

The blasts were close to a shopping centre, the Sarinah, where victims' bodies were seen strewn on the ground.

At least six explosions rang out and a police post was damaged.

"This is a bomb," Anton Charliyan, national police spokesman told AFP.

He warned people to stay away, saying police fear there could be more bombs.

The shooting was happening outside a Starbucks opposite the shopping centre.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attacks.

UN regional representative Jeremy Douglas was live tweeting the events as they unfolded:

A massive #bomb went off in front of our new #Indonesia office as @collie_brown & I exit car. Chaos & we're going into lock-down
Apparent #suicidebomber literally 100m from the office and my hotel. Now gunfire
Now 4th bomb and gunfight
5th and 6th bombing
Serious exchange of fire in downtown #Jakarta. Didn't experience this in 3.5 years in #Pakistan

Pictures are circling on Twitter showing casualties, so beware.

My girlfriend works at a large company about a block away and is pretty scared right now. :( Trying to keep her calm at the moment. She said a lot of her coworkers heard the explosions and shots.

Im in office right now and pretty far from the scene, but my friend just left starbucks literally 10 minutes before the explosion.. Thank god hes safe..

So far they have targeted starbuck on central district, and a small police station right infront of starbucks

Gunfights is on going

My god this is scary

Main roads around the scene is now closed

Please don't end up as bad as Paris.. these big coordinated attacks in cities are terrifying. How do you even stop them?

I guess islamic countries arent even safe from this shit.

They're especially prone to this shit - consider the sheer number of suicide bombers that detonate all over the Middle East.

This is fucked up. I hope that casualties are minimal.

So similar to the istanbul attacks theyre going after foreigners in Muslim countries now? Is this gonna be a trend? These pieces of shits man. Fuck.

I guess islamic countries arent even safe from this shit.

no, Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) bombed Bali in 2002 and killed 202 people (including 88 Australians, 38 Indonesians, and people from more than 20 other nationalities).

They are associated with Al-Queda, kinda like SE Asia's equivalent.

They are extremists, and so don't like the western influence on Islamic states in the region. .

When attacks happened in Egypt and Turkey, I was wondering in my usual paranoia, when is our country turn. We are the largest muslim country and there's lot of western and foreign targets you can found in Jakarta.

And yeah, you do not want to click the "Sarinah" keyword in the Twitter. There are pretty graphic image of bodies in a blasted police box, and the typical Jakartans crowds encircling them. "Hey there's a explosion and bodies, instead hiding to our safety, let's go see them!"

this isn't the first time there's a terror attack in Indonesia. The 2002 bombing in Bali killed 202 people
and the vast majority of terror attacks happen in Islamic countries, targeting muslims

Not very good.

Part of Sydney city, around the Opera House, has also been cordoned off by police and they are moving people away from the area. Hope it's not linked

These attacks seem to be increasing in frequency. Could well be IS considering the recent reports about their presence in Indonesia.

Did Daesh/IS not recently state they wanted to affiliate with groups in Indonesia and create a 'distant caliphate'?

Bit early to say as there are lots of extremist groups in Indonesia.

Bit scary with that context though.

Stay safe man.

Thanks, im quite far from the scene,..

A scene at explosion in Starbuck, burger king is just beside it.

and if you search around twitter (please be careful of graphic images), theres someone filming a gunfight and accidentally captured a suicide bomber in frame.. literally explode in the video

There are gunfires as well apparently, cops have died on duty.

I think this is the worse that has happened since the Bali bombing. We rarely (or even never) had a gunfire terrorisms before here. And it's happening in several spots, not just in Sarinah. This is VERY unsettling.

Stay safe my friends in Jakarta.
