Nah. Trump was so genuine in his delivery that it made cruz seem like the slimy politician outsider trying to score points.

Is this how "political debates" work out in the US usually? I only saw low attacks on every part in every directs, but absolutely 0 substance.
(also seriously, what do you have against socialism? It's talked about as worse than Nazism from what I always hear/read....)

There was substance. Trump said we should start a trade war with China. Cruz wants to eliminate our government's ability to collect taxes. Jeb knew where planes are built.

What he did looked like a retreat. His criticism was about liberal policies, not how New Yorkers responded to 9/11. Clarifying that would have shut down Trump's attack and made it look like an opportunistic invocation of 9/11: "Don't criticize me because 9/11 so there!"
I don't think such a response would be anything like the black-friend defense. The latter doesn't clarify a statement.
Why the hell didn't he have a response? I don't understand. Not only is "New York Values" standard shit, Trump made the 9/11 response before the debate. And Cruz still didn't have something to say? I bet even Jeb could have hit that one out of the park.

It's hard to talk about substance with so many people on the stage. When the losers drop out (please happen soon!) and we get down to like 2-3 candidates, you will see far more substance and fewer personal attacks.
He got legit shook, and couldn't think clearly. His eyes and awkward applause said everything.
I think he is overcompensating for exactly that reason. He is a pariah on the right because they foolishly believe that him going to Obama for help cost Mitt the election

I agree. Its fucking annoying. He looks like he's there just to advertise himself and not care to engage with the questioners or give attention to the audience. The audience, despite being crazy thunderdome crowd, still deserves your respect because they are the ones who put the effort to be there. Dude just ignores them and treats the debates like a national primetime address and pounds Hillary and Obama. I mean, are we in the general or what. He is polling worse than fukking Ben "Joseph built pyramids to store grain" Carson. You got bigger problems buddy.

Yeah his mugging is really dumb especially since it's all an act. His artifice shows any time he tries to be a tell-it-like-it-is, anti-Washington, anti-establishment outsider. He's so clearly just another politician trying to do what's popular.

I'm struggling to find how Christie is profiting from being in the race still. He has no chance and he knows it, he's just there for some ulterior motive that really has nothing to do with the race.
I mean that was his "thing" prior to Trump coming in and stealing that spotlight of boorish-loud-person-with-no-filter, so I don't think he's "stealing" that act so much as he's trying to put the spotlight back on him by saying ridiculously stupider shit every time.

True, what I mean is Christie always portrayed himself as a tough guy, honest, straight shooter type who doesn't care about politics, only what he believes. Then Trump comes in and not only does the same thing, but does it in a way that feels far more authentic to the very people Christie was selling himself to. Trump's act has exposed the artifice of Christie's act. Or at least that's how I see it.
Four years ago people literally BEGGED him to get into the race. He declined, went on to hug Obama and shit on Romney and the party in general when they wouldn't offer him a prime speaking spot at the convention. He's remembering the part where everyone loved him and missing the fact that now everyone hates him almost as much as they hate Jindal.

Quite. Not many Presidents have had such views. Most of them defend aspects of the country from these sorts of crass stereotypes. It not some genetic power. It social. America is a very mixed country. Theres a lot of people with connection to New York whether Family or Friends.

Having worked for the Republican Party for several years, the answer is this:
Most Republican politicians, and their staff, sincerely believe that their position is the majority one. Not just by 51%, but they think it's more like 80% in their heads. They think that other 20% has somehow gained control of the country, and they need to make sure they represent the REAL interests of this country no matter what. That's why they use terms like "activist judges", because they think that this is the only way liberals can win.
When the masses vote Democrat, actual political Republicans believe that it's a corruption of the true American way of life. The entitlement generation is taking over. Our country is going downhill, etc. Thus, even if the majority population doesn't embrace Republican ideals, that is irrelevant to party members. These party members see it as their job to get American back on track, because to them, the Democrats really are a kind of evil to be destroyed in this country.
As such, someone like Cruz doesn't feel concerned about New York liberals. They are part of the problem with the country, and he thinks he's here to clean that place up and help it become more conservative. They should be mocked, he thinks, because that's the enemy - of course you attack the enemy!

Christie completely shat the bed. The 2012 GOP nomination was his to take. Begged Obama for help during Sandy. He wanted to broker the image of a maverick who can cross party aisle for his inevitable 2016 crowning. Then Bridgegate happened and it submerged him nationwide. And then Trump happens shifting the party on the edge of a cliff. In other words, there is no comeback for him. NH might save his ass, but rest of the country is done with his shit.
He's just holding onto hope. The presidency is all he really has to shoot for. Otherwise, his political career is virtually toast in two years. It's this or nothing.
