Republican Group Calls for Carbon Tax

It's always been insane to me that global warming was a political issue. As someone who works in the atmospheric sciences, it's the same as denying evolution or gravity, or tectonics. I always figured republicans would go for a lighter approach to mitigating, such as cap and trade, whilst democrats would be in favor of a carbon tax and regulations to reduce the ammount of oil, gas, etc. produced.

The world we live in, however is one where the majority of the GOP ignores or even denies AGW.

So they are loosening coal emission restrictions so that we have more coal energy plants but then want to tax them more?

That's either really smart or really stupid.

Washington state had an interesting trial balloon version of this.

Cut the sales tax, implement a carbon tax instead. Revenue-neutral. Appeal to voters' through an on-face tax cut.

Initiative was defeated by the left who argued it wasn't progressive enough. (I mean, this is Washington.)
They probably saw how stupid the Australian public was in reacting to a carbon tax

A well executed carbon tax or cap and trade system would be much better than the current regulatory system we currently have. Let the market decide when an activity creates more value than it causes damages to the environment.

there's no money in denying plate tectonics
