Hey guys, I want to get my PSP online, but haven't had any luck finding any Wireless Access Points on the cheap. I am running a Linsys 4 port wired router and would just like to add a WAP (preferably another Linksys, but anything will do). I live in an Apartment, so I don't really need one that sends packets to Timbuktu.

Can somone suggest a WAP that will allow me to get the PSP online? I'm very price sensitive right now, so while I want something that will work, money rules all.

Here you go.

You could probably find a little cheaper if you really searched, but that's a reputable wireless router from a reputable seller.
Thanks, but they are sold out.

have you tried scanning in your area (actually scanning for unencrypted WAPs?). At my house I have two suckers I can connect to. My buddies house has 6, and my brother's place has 3.

why pay for a wap when you can use someone else's for free.

Luckily I'm not stupid and my network is locked down to keep creeps like you out.

Just a reminder.

At the end of last year, in an interview, some bigwig from EA stated that 'all the next gen systems would act as wireless access points'.

I know this doesn't really pertain to what you're looking for, but I thought that there will be quite a few people potentially looking at this thread, and just to remind them that if they're going to be onboard the next gen, that this'll be available to them in the future.

Sorry about taking it off topic. :)

One question I have though: What is the best namebrand for wireless routers/hubs? All I know is Linksys, but I don't know how good they are.

Why pay when you can steal? Jesus.

IMO, Linksys is fucking crap. Dunno if they have improved since being bought out by CISCO, but I would assume they still suck

Netgear I think makes better stuff.

good for you. seriously. and hopefully everyone will eventually be as smart as you or WiFi standards or manufacturers will straighten up. In the meantime, I will continue exploiting the extremely exploitable system, and publicly announce I do.

If anyone else wants to stop me or degenerates like me from stealing their bandwidth:

a) turn off SSID broadcasting (can still be bypassed)
b) use WEP encryption (can still be bypassed)
c) use MAC address filtering (very difficult to bypass)

use all three and unless a hacker REALLY REALLY wants to get on your network you'll have it locked down.

I love how you guys bash me but then offer up no help to anyone to stay safe from me. :\

Apparently, you can get by with just a wireless adaptor on a machine with Internet Connection Sharing. Wireless adaptors, USB or PCI, can be found for $20 or so normally, and sometimes "free after rebate".

The thing I don't know is whether there is any sort of security at all (WEP, mac address filtering) available for the ad-hoc PSP-to-PC wireless connection you'd use to make this work. The one bonus, other than the price, to using a wireless adaptor and ICS instead of a real wireless access point/router, is that you can tunnel ad-hoc PSP multiplayer for Xlink instead of needing a specific wireless router with a 3rd party firmware.

[edit]
Yea, you can apparently use WEP on these ad hoc wireless connections (bottom of page). And here's an example of a cheap wireless adaptor ($7 after rebate), although you can find cheaper if you look around. You would still need a Windows computer with Internet Connection Sharing, or the know-how to set up another OS to do the same.

MAC filtering won't keep a knowledgeable/determined person out for long if WEP is being used.

Stinkin' WEP is the problem, they need to get it right in their next hardware or it's just going to get worse.

MAC filtering and WEP are technically independent. MAC filtering will keep the person from using the internet connection. WEP will make it more difficult for the person to get on (and impossible to get on unless the hacker is using a PC in tandem)

You crack the WEP key so you can see the traffic unencrypted. You can then see the MAC address and spoof it. What do you mean by "using the PC in tandem"?

Each security measure on it's own is weak, encryption being the key to it all. Stronger encryption is needed otherwise the other measures gain you little to nothing.

ahh.. ok.. I see where we are getting confused. I was talking about just using the PSP. you can't mac spoof with that. that is also what I meant by in tandem. to break WEP you need a PC to get the key, more than just the PSP.

search the bargain sites for a wireless router 56g or newer... these are often cheaper than APs and clearout when new models replace them. just disable (not use) the router part.

Gotcha.

I really hope Microsoft leads the way with better security in Xbox2. With their desire to secure their software lets hope they at least give us the option of greater security measures on their hardware. That may force the hand of Nintendo and Sony to go with better security if that's not already in their scope.

Anyone ever use TKIP?.. WPA preshared keys?.. key rotation?

Not that the PSP is capable, thus making my questions irrelevant here, but I'm still curious heh. =P
