Today I converted my virgin, untouched 1.00 PSP, long the home of homebrew and the bane of legitimate UMDs, to 2.00. I thought my plan was perfect -- I'd use my 1.50 US system to do anything that required UMDs, and keep the 1.00 for homebrew only.

But then came Advent Children, a movie that required a 2.00 upgrade before it would play. And charged, as I am, with reviewing the UMD for Wired, I had to play it somehow. So did I move my homebrew to the 1.50 and use the KXploit for the first time.

I bristle at its inefficiency and creation of Corrupted Data fields on my once-pristine menu bar.

But Sam and Max works, and so does Advent Children. Which I guess is adequate compromise.

Still, though.

Yeah, I also heard if you wipe the screen with steel wool, that it'll clean it right up.

Yeah, same here. Getting used to these corrupt data icons :/

yeah, seipsp is great for removing data corruption. only problem is that there's a couple programs that won't run properly when you do the hide corrupt icon trick, but i think all programs that are worth getting are resolved by now

I'm going to resist upgrading my launch 1.00 as long as I can. I have another one with which I can conduct firmware experiments.

You know, you didn't need to upgrade to play v2.0 software or movies on a v1.0 machine, right?

All you needed to do was boot up a movie that works with your current firmware version, then when the white PSP screen comes up, quickly swap discs.

Same works for games.

I tried the version changer software, which didn't work for AC. And I hadn't heard about the swap trick, which sounds... a bit dangerous.

I'll look into the hide-the-corrupt-data-thingies software though.

Ah ha: but can you downgrade back to 1.0? When I looked it seemed like you could only go down to 1.5.

And this wasn't a downgrade. This was a one hundred percent pure original launch 1.00.

Apparently the disc swap trick has absolutly no risks involved.

And the reason there is no 1.0 downgrade yet, is because it is the base firmware.

Sony made a v1.5 upgrader for the Japanese, and that is whats being used to downgrade the thing from 2.0 to 1.5.

Hopefully someone will hack the boot file and put 1.0 on it.

Downgrade or not, its the same thing. My PSP isn't any more "1.5" because its never been upgraded than someone who downgraded.

Great book, although I haven't read it straight through yet, just read portions here and there.
