Research on Violent Videogames

Hey all,

I'm doing a school project and I was wondering if you guys could help me with some thoughts:

Since the invention of videogames, I am looking to find games which are violent and have had a major graphical overhaul over the course of videogame history. Can you guys think of any? An example is Doom 1 to Doom 3.

Mortal Kombat immediately comes to mind for violence. Are you saying a series that has graphically evolved within itself? I'm not sure I understand the last part.

GTA -> current gen GTA's

Resident Evil -> Resident Evil 4

Ninja Gaiden -> Ninja Gaiden

Metal Gear -> Metal Gear Solid 3

Are you saying a series that has graphically evolved within itself?

Basically, the only requirement is that the game is 1. violent and 2. has had a major graphical update from its beginnings to its end. So yes, I think Mortal Kombat qualifies.

Gotcha. That's what I thought, I wasn't 100% sure though.

I don't understand why you need this evidence. Can you tell us exactly why you are collecting data on violent video games? Because research concerning the effects of violent games (and I've yet to see why you have proposed to research this topic so I'm not certain what your hypothesis is) has failed to address many things. Please explain.

hardware or software?

hardware, analog controllers, sega's nights and the n64 pretty much ties on this one

sotware, the whole RTS and FPS genres invented

Criteria/info for violent games

• Violent likely directed towards animated, human like if possible
o Old and new versions as qualitatively similar as possible
 How similar are the storylines
• Other game features that need to be as closely matched as possible across versions:
o Who is violence directed towards?
o Type of violence? Weapon, human?
o Level of gore?
Is the user able to manipulate this? Can we turn it on and off in both editions of the game?
o Perspective?
 First or third person? Same in both versions (ideally this is what we need)? Manipulate?

That doesn't answer the original poster's question. Why are you collecting this data? What's the intent of your research? What hypothesis are you seeking to prove/disprove, if any?

I'm guessing the intent is to see whether or not the most violent video games have gotten more violent via more realistic graphics.

We are just seeing general reactions of gamers to exposure to earlier and then later forms of games. Thus, it is data collection research.
