Side-by-side comparison of the Resident Evil 4 Tech Demo for the Dreamcast in different configurations (default vs. low, medium, and high settings).
Resident Evil 4 has been ported to Dreamcast...except actually not! It's a bit complicated but a developer by the name of PS3NOM-DC developed their own 3D engine for Dreamcast and, as a proof of concept, brought a portion of Resident Evil 4 to Dreamcast! And while this may never be a full Resident Evil 4 Port or Resident Evil Remake...it's an amazing proof of concept for an engine that will give us a lot more NEW Dreamcast games in the future! This is why retro gaming is making a comeback...Dreamcast is back!
  • (00:01–00:18) A so-called "Resident Evil 4 port" on Dreamcast is actually a technical demo, not a real port—it's a recreation built to showcase a new engine developed by Phenom.
  • (00:18–00:41) The demo is unlikely to become a full game; its purpose is to demonstrate the capabilities of this new Dreamcast game engine, which already looks impressive even in an early (alpha) state.
  • (00:41–01:03) The creator highlights how modern tools and SDKs for retro hardware are improving rapidly, making it easier than ever to develop new games for systems like the Dreamcast.
  • (01:03–01:38) Unlike the past—where retro development required outdated, clunky tools—new engines and SDKs are bridging the gap between modern and retro development, enabling more ambitious projects.
  • (01:56–02:20) The demo shows a playable section with Leon and zombies, proving that a full Resident Evil 4-style experience could be technically feasible on Dreamcast.
  • (02:20–02:56) While visuals are impressive, the demo has basic animations, bugs, and clipping issues, reinforcing that it's a proof-of-concept for the engine, not a polished game.
  • (02:56–03:36) The engine is compared to older Dreamcast prototypes (like unreleased titles), but with a key difference: this engine was built by a single developer, highlighting how accessible development has become.
  • (05:19–05:59) The engine supports audio, sound effects, and gameplay systems, and the demo runs decently, even on real hardware (though footage was captured via emulator).
  • (06:20–07:08) Features include adjustable shadows and draw distance, allowing players to tweak atmosphere—especially useful for horror experiences.
  • (08:05–10:10) The engine shows strong potential for future Dreamcast games, especially in genres like survival horror, platformers, or beat 'em ups, and reflects a broader retro gaming revival driven by better tools and passionate developers.
