October 26, 2005 - Resident Evil Deadly Silence is speeding its way towards a Japanese release on 1/19, just a couple of months prior to the tenth anniversary of the original PlayStation Resident Evil. The latest issue of Famitsu features an updated look at the title, giving us a first look at wireless play, the opening movie, the new "classic mode" of play and a control layout.

First, that classic mode. Purists wanting to play Resident Evil in its original form will be able to do so here. Classic mode features the same controls and puzzle layout at as the original PlayStation title, complete with zero stylus use. The event scenes are fully voiced in the DS version and can now be skipped.

Classic mode isn't the only way Capcom is trying to replicate the original. The original's opening movie has been included as well. That's right, the cheesy live-action look at Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and the rest of the b-cast can be enjoyed on the DS in full form.

When not playing in classic mode, the DS version adds a few new elements to the Resident Evil experience, and Famitsu has provided a control layout so that we can get a better grip on the game before we actually play it. RE: DS will feature pretty much all the basic moves you've come to expect of a Resident Evil title. You can perform a quick turn by pressing down and B. You can make your character reload by holding R (to equip your weapon) and tapping B. Similar to Resident Evil 4, your character is always equipped with a knife, and this can be called out by pressing the L button.

While the main mode of play will be Rebirth Mode, an arranged mode featuring the new first-person knife fights and stylus-based puzzles, the game will also offer wireless (ad-hoc) play. Up to four players will be able to play cooperatively and competitively. In cooperative play, players work together to escape a mansion. Competitive play is a race to kill the most zombies. This mode features a variety of enemies, with your score affected by enemy size. Strangely, in all multiplayer modes, the game displays characters outside of your own with colored icons.

With the new modes and the classic RE included in full form, DS looks like a true anniversary celebration of Resident Evil. The game's US release should follow the Japanese release closely early next year.

:lol that's awesome.

Everything about this owns. I wonder if the opening will be uncut? :D

Oh, and will Lisa Trevor be in Rebirth Mode?

I just want to know, PLEASE let them have re-done the voices and not used the horrible horrible voice overs from the original version...

"UN-rico!" :lol

I hope they keep the original VAs perfectly intact, at least in classic mode. I did quite love how things were redone for the Cube REmake though.

I just want to finally see some video clips of the game in action. Screenshots are nice, but don't tell much.

They should have make a top down game, like Alien Breed or Gauntlet.

This is just a waste of time and money. If I want to play the original Resident Evil again I will play the Gamecube remake.

Then it wouldn't be the original Resident Evil.

Why does everyone keep comparing this to the REmake and acts as if you're only meant to have one of them? It's the original RE, not the remake. No one seemed to complain when the FC DQ games were ported to GBC, or complained this much when the original SMB came out for GBA.

There technically is in the Pretty-crap Capcom game "Under the Skin". Theres a level with you running around Raccoon City where you need to defeat cell-shaded Nemesis.

I didn't know REmake had 4 player coop and competitive modes! Thanks for letting me know!

Fucking SOLD

The multiplayer mode sounds pretty interesting. Coop sounds brilliant but the zombie deathmatch mode seems pretty basic. Should be fun nonetheless.

It's become cllassic. :D

Still, I don't see the point of playing a game like RE on a portable console.

While games don't generally scare me in the way RE sets out to I saw that as being the only real reason to play Resident Evil Remake and Zero on the GameCube.

Is it the gameplay that holds up Resident Evil or is it the horror is what I'm asking. And if it's the horror how does that translate to a handheld?

:(.

Let me explain why I did not want o buy it: for me, besides the intro movie and the ending movie, Resident Evil 1: Rebirth IS the definitive Resident Evil 1, THE one version you take as reference, its best and ultimate incarnation (till they remake it again and they top it again).

Much better atmosphere (re-doing the CG backgrounds and adding FMV animation to them was a great idea), new enemies, new locations, some new puzzles (IIRC, I might be wrong on this :(), much better controls (Type-C) and IMPROOVED story (more bits and pieces abput the "architect" of the mansion and his family IIRC).

The only reason at all to play the old game on PSOne is the FMV... now the DS one is portable, has updated player models and has the old FMV... it is attracting.

Now if they port Resident Evil 1: Rebirth to PSP they will sucker me in another purchase ;).

They should have made a non-serious comedy RE game.

Don't ask where this idea comes from.

Yeah exactly, you could do some very cool stuff with an RE game like that. But alas, its not going to happen cause apparently only we can come up with brilliant ideas like that.
