Come on what? Resident Evil is supposed to be scary, tense, ooooo creepy. These movies aren't. They're bloody comedies with zombies.

Or in RE:A's case, 2 minutes worth of zombies.

To be fair, everytime RE the game opens its mouth (a cutscene), it's pretty much a comedy with zombies too.

In it's quiet gameplay moments, however, RE does have a rich horror atmopshere that is not at all portrayed in the movies.

I enjoyed both movies immensely.

Sure, they weren't great movies. They were completely opposite in style of each other. The acting wasn't really that great...but hell it's better than 90% of the other shit adapated from a videogame and Mila Jovovich is hot and naked in both.

Worth my $10? Hellz yeah.

The first RE was awful.

Apocalypse was surprisingly decent. I mocked the early script leaks, but the final product was so absurd and packed with fan-service that it was worth it. :D

1 = good

2 = fucking horrible and wish I could forget it

....and to think I used to be sympathetic towards P.Anderson.....

How can you call the first one good?

Even Scary Movie 3 was scarier than that shit.

These movies were never really meant to be "horror" movies.

The games themselves aren't really "horror" games. That's more Silent Hill's job.

The dialogue in the games have always been campy, and those characteristics translated to the movies pretty well.

It's more about atmosphere, and shock value, both of which the first one had an adequate amount of.

The tight corridors, the dank hallways. The scene outside the Mansion with the crows. The elevator scene where they are panicing, the scene where the Captain gets diced by the lazers, the first enounter with the zombie limping with an axe. Anderson's strongest point is his ability to deliver tension in small, tight places on camera.

The second one was so different because it opened things up - the scene with Alice standing in a ruined city, I thought, it was great - it really was an Apocalpyse, surrounded by death. It was very game-like, too. The characters traveling from one zone to the next (Church, Graveyard, School) and battling end "bosses" of each section (Licker, zombie horde, dogs) etc, before moving on. Also, the Nemisis was pulled off pretty well. As I said, I just hated the way the actions were filmed - too tight, too many quick cuts.

They just had eh-eh acting, little plot, campy dialouge - not "good movies," but certaintly not utter crap. Lots of gaming-throw backs, which you can't say for a lot of "game based" movies these days.

I look forward to the third one, at least for its entertainment value - not its film value.

Umbrella Corpation has a plan to replace humankind with a race of undead clones?

What a stupid plot, first of all how can a business run when the human race is extinct

Who are they going to sell products to?

You're overlooking the potential of the international braaains market.

Paul Anderson is one of the worst directors alive. His films are usually mediocre and boring. Completely uninspired.

Mila Jovovich needs to stop making the same film over and over. The trailer to "Ultraviolet" is exactly like RE.

"My name is blahblahblah. I was created by the "insert evil corporation". Now they're trying to cover it up etc."

God, modern film is going down.

I think not. I think you'd be foolish to consider Anderson a herald of "modern film". He makes drinking movies! The guy gets mounds of shit on the internet every day.... don't act like anyone outside of cheesy movie fans respect him.

Decry Spielberg's latest movies, or something, if you wanna decry modern film.

Yeah you make a good point. But even as cheesy movies go, his films still don't look as good or are as fun as most out there.

the first RE made $101 million worldwide at the box office and another $41.6 million on rentals, DVD and stuff

$101,854,457 (Worldwide), $41,600,000 (USA)

RE2 made
$129,394,835 (Worldwide) ( 2004) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318627/business

Bigger business = bigger budgets = more sequals.

And yea, the original RE had a huge cult following on DVD, it did a TON more on Rentals/Purchases then it did in domestic box office. If Anderson once three more movies, as long as this trend continues, he'll get them.

Its *THAT* that gets him Castlevania, not the movie's quality for sure.

FYI, Paul Anderson just announced casting decisions for Castlevania.

[Insert Male Name] Belmont will be played by Winona Ryder and Alucard will be played by Nicole Kidman.

Had fun with the first two, so I'm looking forward to this. Was also a fan of Event Horizon

Same here, but I liked the first one ALOT better than the second. Just seems that his relationship with Mila clouded alot of the judgement in making the 2nd. Event Horizon is definitely one of my favorite movies ever.

I think it was one of the most fucked up movies I've ever seen.
Scares the crap out of me.

John Leguizamo was the least of the movie's problems.

Oh, you're just too intelligent to fall for that hack Romero's tricks, aren't you? Go on, flex that critical eye! Show the world how nuanced you are to the techniques of filmmaking, how no inconsistency or illogical conclusion, no matter how slight, can escape the scrutiny of your highly honed mind. Let us know how l33t you are, master. It might make your nights warmer, as you lie alone in bed with sticky hands and a fresh stain on the mattress.

That didn't seem to stop everyone from jerking off all over Resident Evil 4.

Yeah because being a better game than it's predessor, and just one of the best games to come out this generation, is revelent to being a decent movie in general. Leon is hero to the best RE game again like he did with RE2, I don't even know what's the deal with Alice.

The deal with Alice? She's the Mary-Sue of the story. These movies are just fan fiction.

OKAY! So I got this character, Alice! And she's super tough and totally bad ass! She shows up at just the right time to save all the main characters because shes, like, so much more powerful! And she can't die. Because shes immortal. And has lazer beam eyes.

RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION

I don't THINK this is old... but lock if it is.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432021/

Plot: Alice fights the Umbrella Corpation and their plan to replace humankind with a race of undead clones.
---------

Me:
Seems that the only confirmed cast members are Millia as Alice and Sienna again as Jill (YES!! She was the best damn part of Apocolypse)

I know this is IMDB, but it jives with what I've read elsewhere.

It doesn't say who the director is yet; my guess is that it's going to be Witt again, since I hear Anderson is going to do AVP2 after his current projects, and Witt's movie actually was a bigger box office hit.

Extinction, previously known as "Afterlife," was written by Anderson; however, he originally intended to close the story arc that he started with his Original Resident Evil movie. He's going to finish this movie up, with the addition of the game characters, and he has plans for two more RE movies. I believe he wants one in a desert, and the other in Japan? Anyway, they are said to be even more loosey based on the games - he wants them to be "original" - from him, anyway. Wether all that stays true or not, can't say.

Anyway, is anyone else cautiously excited?
I actually LIKED Resident Evil for its atmosphere and campy horror. For it's small budget, Anderson did a pretty good job - his strongest work is building suspense and tension in small, tight cooridors. Apocalyse was good enough because of its game tie-ins and laughable entertainment value, cheese action and TERRIBLE quick-cuts during fight scenes and all, and Sienna Guillroy, of course. She kicked ass as a hot, shallow-Jill; though I'd prefer a bit more depth in her.

Anyway, thoughts?

welp if sienna is in it im goin to see it fuck the script....better be some boobie scenes.

undead clones, hmm?

I wonder of who...?

Dammit, I must know.

And why can't the clones be alive?
Why do they have to be undead clones?
Why clone the dead? There are TONS of dead already.

UPDATE:

source

Resident Evil: Extinction, the third installment in the popular game-to-film franchise, is set to begin production in 2006. Russell Mulcahy (The Shadow, Highlander) will direct with Milla Jovovich reprising her starring role.

It was previously believed that the third film, written by Paul W.S. Anderson, would be titled Resident Evil: Afterlife. Reports said the movie would be set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun with mutant zombies. The setting was the Nevada desert with the Aussie outback standing in for the American wasteland. In the final reel, the action would have shifted to Japan, setting up the fourth installment.
It's unclear now if Resident Evil: Extinction will follow that same storyline or whether or not a fourth film is still planned.

Sony's Screen Gems will again distribute the film in North America.

Another Update:

With casting, director, and location details!
And it looks like they are calling it Afterlife again. Well, who knows at this point?

Production Weekly reports that actor Oded Fehr will be back for the sequel Resident Evil: Afterlife. Fehr, who appeared in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, will reprise his role as Carlos Olivera. Star Milla Jovovich also is returning as lead character Alice.

The site claims series vets Mike Epps and Iain Glen also will return as L.J. and the wicked Dr. Isaacs, respectively.

Filming is slated to begin in May in Mexicali, Mexico under the direction of Russell Mulcahy (The Shadow). The script was penned by Paul W.S. Anderson, who helmed the first Resident Evil.

Production Weekly says Afterlife follows a vengeful Alice as she leads a caravan of humans from Nevada to Alaska.

Anyway, I'm glad Fehr is back. He is a seriously underrated badass. I hope he has more depths in this one. Mike Epps? Well, lets hope he doesn't try TOO hard to be a token streotype again... though his "10 points, GTA muthafucka!" line from RE2 was without a DOUBT one of the highlights of the film.

STILL WAITING ON CONFIRMMING SIENNA, what are you doing, shes the best part.

source

Edit: If you follow through to the Production Weekly link on the IGN page, THEY call the movie "RE: Extinction," so that is the actual name of the movie (like my thread title!) and its just IGN that is again using it wrong. Unless they know something everyone else doesnt.

All hope died after the second one. I'm officially not interested in this series anymore, which is sad considering I actually thought the first was decent and therefore thought there would be some potential here. But reading all this just pretty much confirms it.
