Resident Evil (PSP) Announced

Sorry to resurrect this, but I assume there was nothing at all at E3 about this other than the announcement? This could be really awesome, and something to fill the RE void I've got now that it's Gears of Evil.

nothing at all, at least it's confirmed to be in the works by Tretton himself :)

The PSP has button setup enough to replicate RE4 controls perfectly. Maybe not RE5 with strafing but RE4 should be fine.

A Resident Evil Outbreak title with RE4 controls would be very nice (especially if it's set in classic Raccoon city).

If the emphasis is on mood and actual "survival horror", as opposed of RE4's survival genocide, I'm all in. I could easily see myself playing this before I go to sleep, with the only light in the room coming from the actual PSP.

However, I'm not sure I want a RE4-clone on the PSP. I would probably just fling the system across the room in frustration after dying for the nth time. Yeah, I sucked at RE4.

Do you really prefer:

In anyway, knowing how capcom is, we gonna get some kind of game alla RE Degeneration for mobile phone XD with improved engine. I Hope I'm wrong.

Being that the game is called "Resident Evil Portable" and that most PSP games with "Portable" in their names are ports of a console game, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this will be RE1 on the PSP. Probably the GCN version. The picture on the annoucement doesn't quite fit with that, though, and the name may just be a placeholder.

They said it would different from the others.

If that's the case, maybe it'll be a Monster Hunter spin on the series. Not sure how'd that work, though.

Outbreak still has 30 some scenarios which were developed at SOME stage before File 2's sales made sure there would not be a File 3. Theres tons of NPC's you could use from File 3 with gameshark and the like. I would hope thats the direction they are taking with this, especially since this generation finally has a way to deliver updates (new scenarios).

Having gone back and played on the Japanese servers with people I know and using Skype to chat, its a real blast. It was just ahead of its time and lacked proper communication options.

I'd prefer something prerendered with static backgrounds. It could be somewhere between RE3 (which already looks excellent on the small screen) an REmake...closer to REmake probably.

Yeah the artwork doesn't match REmake, and they just released RE on PSone classic, so I don't think that will be it.

I really wish they make a brand new RE game though. But they didn't show any video during the presentation, which makes me believe....
1) The game haven't really begin development yet.
2) It could be a port of PS2 game and it's weird to show video of that at the conference.

But Gran Turismo Portable is a new game, and Metal Gear Portable Ops is a new game. It's too soon to jump to conclusions.

I wasn't that interested in the announcement. There are a lot of side Resident Evil games that are bad, like Umbrella Chronicles or the Dead Aim games. Just the name "Resident Evil" doesn't mean known quality.

I wouldn't mind which style they do make it. I would prefer RE4 style and I don't see why they couldn't do it, or maybe even make it a mix breed like the original RE4 was. If it was a remake or classic game, an updated RE2 would be awesome.

In one of the clues of the "Secret #2" E3 game they said that Capcom Japan was making it. So I'm hoping for a new game and not a port.

But Capcom + PSP = ports

It will be ported, but I think it's RE2 on a modified RE4 engine.

I hope at least.

I'm going with port of Outbreak and Outbreak File 2. Maybe with RE4 style camera/controls. That's my prediction anyways.

RE 4 players coop game?

Actually I thought just by reading the title that it was a port of REmake (even tho it would look awful) but nice if it is a new game altogheter

dude seriously, if that's what it turns out to be it'll be the best thing that could possibly happen to it .

This is what I was saying a day or two before E3 in the Army of Two PSP thread. It would be perfect for the PSP´s one stick :D The announcement blew me away.

They should finally go back to zombies though, because the PSP is still harder to aim than the dualshock.

If it´s on rails I won´t buy it, at least not at full price. With full tank controls I´d only buy for dirt cheap.

Very true, it was far better than the fate it received. Hell, it mixed story and monster killing, it's just the comms that held things back.

Well, that sort of answers my question of who is developing the project. Lots of Japanese publishers are looking towards western or outside studios for spin-offs of their games, I wouldn't be surprised if this followed that trend. Then again, Monster Hunter is the PSP's killer app franchise and it would make perfect sense to put RE Portable in the hands of a subset of that team (while they're not making new Monster Hunters, of course.) The fact that this team is roughly the same development group behind RE Outbreak and that multiplayer co-op was a big part of the success of Monster Hunter helps that guess a little more.

I really can't see Capcom doing a traditional RE on the PSP. They've really got to see the potential money maker they have if they do a RE: Outbreak on the PSP. And that's a big series in the West too, so they don't even have to work on building its name like they do with Monster Hunter.

But File 2 was a huge bomb, which is why we haven't seen anymore games in the series in the last 5 years. Only non-million seller in the RE's non-Gun Survivor series.

The game will probably feature some kind of multiplayer, but it could be more influenced by RE5 than by Outbreak.

The Monster Hunter games were never that big on the PS2 either. They sold decently but never like they did on the PSP. Those games seem to shine on the PSP. Just look at Phantasy Star Portable, it outsold all the other PSO type games in no time.

PSP controls are not ideal for a fast-paced action game. I want a traditional Resident Evil with less tank-like controls. Give me quick-turn and I'll be happy.

The RE4 control setup will work on the PSP. There won't be strafing, but you won't really need it since you don't move to shoot.

I think cvxfreak is right in that this game will be similar to RE5's style of structure. I'm expecting 2-4 player co-op gameplay through 6 or 7 chapters (maybe reused RE Outbreak levels, or scrapped File 3 levels) of Raccoon City awesomeness. I'd like to play as a UBCS squad or something, since that way everyone has decent guns. I'm guessing each character will be specialised in some way, like the Outbreak characters. Make it so that every character is limited to 2-3 guns only, it would make combat more interesting. I'd also like the RE4 inventory system back in some way.

I have a hunch it'll be traditional RE or ad hoc RE Outbreak because of the teaser image, which features traditional zombies.

I think ad hoc Outbreak has the potential to be pretty damn awesome. It would be a missed opportunity if it turned out not to be just that.

Capcom could and more than likely reuse Outbreak assets like they did with Monster Hunter Portable to save money. They could all add the File 3 NPCs and a couple of new ones (RE1-RE3 main characters), or just add a customizable character load out instead like the Monster Hunter games. Outbreak games already had the hidden SP items to collect and unlock new costumes. Why not just have the SP items mix and match this time instead of collecting to unlock one new costume.

As already stated, this is a potential way for Capcom to just release new scenarios via download. Release the 10+ scenarios from both games and have new ones every couple of months or so. Just give me Showdown 1-3 and I'll be happy :-(

From the Capcom Blog

Blink and you might have missed it, but Jack Tretton, head of PlayStation in the US (and crack hockey player, to boot) dropped the b0mbz0rz on Capcom E3 Mystery Title #2 on stage during the Sony E3 press conference. Whadda we got for you in terms of info? At this point, very little. The game is some ways off, so don't be expecting this one to come home with you when you upgrade to the PSP Go in the fall. I can tell you that Capcom is working very closely with Sony on this title, as it's something that both companies have wanted on the PSP for quite some time. It's not a "remake" of a previous RE game, but an all-new title created specifically for the PSP platform, with the PSP Go in mind. I've managed to sneak a look at a very early game design document for this title and all I am allowed to say is: Wow. Totally different for a Resident Evil game. More in the future, promise!

I'm going to suggest that this will be Resident Evil Monster Hunter, as Lost Planet 2 has become also. Set it up as S.T.A.R.S, different locations with huge T-Virus infected enemies...baby, you got a stew goin.

I'm glad to read that this is being made with the PSP's controls and abilities specifically in mind instead of just trying to crowbar in console gameplay and visual style.

Maybe we'll see it end up being a Castlevania type game. 2D with upgrading weapons..leveling up. exploring a huge map. I'd be in heaven!

1º This is Capcom putting a huge franchise on psp.
2º Totally different for a Resident Evil game.

Resident Evil Monster Hunter incoming. They did the same thing with Sengoku Basara

That series shat it's own bed a long time ago and now you want it shitting in RE's too? Go away. :/

Why did people think this could be a port/remake? have you not been paying attention to the MASSIVE boost the PSP got? Save for Fat Princess (I'm not sure if LBP is a port or not), every game announced has been specifically made for the PSP.

Your comparisons are flawed because Monster Hunter and PSU never had the expectations that Capcom had with Biohazard. Plus, sales for those two series improved over time (even going from Monster Hunter to Monster Hunter G), while File 2 was a big dropoff from File 1 despite releasing within a year. It's pure fact that it's the PlayStation 2, not the GameCube, that has the biggest RE bomb of last gen.

Capcom sells the most RE games these days if it's in RE4-style.

Whatever happens, Capcom's blog does seem to indicate something pretty different and PSP Go oriented. I doubt it'll be an Outbreak game as we understand it, but who knows.

I also fear how the PSP would handle those massive loadtimes without an HDD.
