Resident Evil Zero...

As I am finished with MGS3 (and perhaps a couple more run in few days for this excellent game), I am thinking about moving to RE4, before I tap onto eventual Halo2. However, one thing that's bothering me to play RE4 is that I haven't played Zero yet.

I played through RE: Rebirth couple times: Chris and Jill - and I honestly have to say that it was quite stressful to get through due to difficulty and horrorsomeness, which is the point of playing this game, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as any other RE series for some reason.

So, my question is... does playing through RE0 enrich play experience in RE4 in certain way? I mean, I guess the main character is Leon, and anything that has to do with Leon storyline would be RE2,3 and CV, which I've played them all. If it's a definite plus and a good game (hopefully not too stressful) and adds to RE4 storyline, then I would be interested in playing the game prior to RE4 - but if not, I might skip it all together and just move to RE4 directly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, I'd suggest playing RE0 first, since you'll want to get that horrid control scheme and fixed camera out of the way. Then play RE4, and you'll never go back.

I am sorry to say this, RE0 is horrible gameplay wise, and for a game that is suppose to be scary it's even less scary than RE4. Gone is the crimson heads, and the game is basicly full of giant bugs. Hardly anything scary about it. On top of that, type c control mode from REmake is gone, plus that the character switching system is very tedious.

Skip this and get RE4.

I've never beaten RE0 either, and after RE4, I don't think I will. Good thing I spent $0 on RE0

I always beat the games I buy, but I stopped playing when I was like 65-70% done in RE0 because it was so goddamn boring. (seen the ending in a speedrun)

The RE controls never bothered me, it's just like that is how RE is susposed to play .

Now the weird enemies you'll find in Zero :)

The thing i hated about RE0 is the lack of a item box . I hated it that you must leave some things in random rooms and must backtrack when you needed that item .

Hmm. Mixed responses... How long is RE0 for first time through? Does it require to play through 2 or more times to see the full story like RE:Rebirth or RE2? If not, I might just get it and get it over with...

I'm in the same position, but more drastic.
Unplayed: REmake, RE0, RE4
PlayING: Dead Aim
So next should I tackle REmake or 0?

Just one time to know the full story i thought or there are endings where you must have a better rank but i'm not aware of that .

I got Resident Evil Zero less than a week before RE4 came out, and I just never got around to beating it. I'm very close to the end, maybe like two bosses left. RE0 is ok...personally I just never found it as fun as REmake. Having two characters lead to some interesting moments, but all the ammo conservation and backtracking started to get on my nerves. I don't know if I can really blame the game for any of that, it might have just been paranoia on my part.

I think it's CVXFreak's favorite RE game after RE4, I've always wondered why that is. I always assumed his favorite RE game would be Code Veronica. :P

I thank you all for your kind input. I guess I will just have to find out myself - at least I am a RE storyline nut, so it has that merit, at least, even if the game is not as fun.

I played RE4 for first 20 min till first save spot on the day I got the game. I am already loving the game very much, and I would do anything to enrich the experience. No FAQs for the first time through, and no reading up the spoiller full threads. ;)

Thanks all again.

Yes you should play through REØ. It may not be the best Resident Evil game but still worth beating. I'd give a 8/10. Awesome FMV cutscenes. The ending is a little disappointing though.

I think it took me 12 hours first time through, which is pretty slow from what I've heard.

Well, the name CVXFREAK was created two years before RE0 came out. :P

I don't think it's worth it. It has the most annoying parts of any RE, and the plot isn't all that interesting (nothing THAT interesting anyways).

Didn't you write a huge post on how you’ve decided on play games for fun and not to 'perfect' anything? :p

If your motive for this is just a few cut scenes, and you'll be wasting hours on it and a lot of stress all while avoiding an awesome game like RE4, then jut don't play it. Read FAQs for the story and I'm sure you can d/l the cut scenes some where. Even if you can't it's really not that big of a deal. I'm still 'annoyed' that I haven't played any RE games (and traded in REmake and Zero) before RE4 but really I'm not going to waste hours of stress on a videogames and instead play RE4. :D

Good luck in whatever you decide to play. :p

I was thinking about picking up RE:0 when it comes out players choice in Australia on the 4th of Feb, I am under the impression that it would be well worth less then half the price of a new game. Still I wish I didn’t sell my RE:remake I might pick it up again for a cheap cheap price.

I thought that RE0 was a great game, not the best in the series by any means, but it was fun. I still thought that REmake was much better though..probably one of the better games gamecube had to offer.

The controls never bothered me once, I actually prefered it :) Once you got use to it, I was fine.

I'm not sure about reading the books; they're supposed to be pretty shitty. You might be better off just reading the storyline analysis available at GameFAQs. It's quite extensive, and I found it to be enjoyable enough, without the frustration that creeps up in parts of the games.

So REmake>RE0?

Too bad I sold REmake and kept 0. To be honest, I played about 1 hour of each (gf got me 0 as a present unfortunately); I just don't have the patience for those old-school RE titles. I think I will still give RE4 a shot at the first price drop though (I probably would have by now but my GC is at my gf's place, and we're playing Paper Mario right now so I wouldn't get to play RE4 too much anyway).

real mature man. you can't go one god damn post without bad mouthing ea can you!

p.s. i like REmake a lot, but RE: Zero is a BITCH of a game. i have been stuck @ about the 5 hour mark for nearly half a year because i am quite literally out of ammo and at a boss. i dont mean "i have A LITTLE ammo" i mean i seriously have no shells of ANYTHING, no grenade launchers, no nothing. i'm not sure if i even have a knife anymore. i would restart it and be more careful with ammo, but fuck it why bother. i got this game for free a couple years ago after rebate (ebgames.com), so no big loss when i sell this a-hole

I did not say that. :p The old REs are just way too fucking tedious, and then you get to a point where you go, "hmmm, maybe I should go back to that save eight hours ago and conserve ammo better" and that is not good.

i honestly can't go back to playing any of the older RE's. the first thing i noticed about resident evil 4 is how user-friendly and unfrustrating (is that a word??) it was. no tedious backtracking and none of that other bullshit associated with previous RE's. i have to agree with most people here, they finally got it right. it keeps all the suspense, all the strategy, all the things you love about resident evil, and it flushes 99% of what you dont like down the toilet.

Chalk me up for someone who's been tainted by RE4.

I recently decided to show some friends REZero, and my god was it so painful to play! My character was like walking in molasses, and the camera angles! I was trying to freakin' cap the zombies in their knees!

RE4 is truly a tainter of souls. BE WARNED, PLAY THE OTHER GAMES BEFORE TACKLING RE4!

Shit, now I'm glad I've held off on RE4. I still want to try REmake and RE0 before moving on to 4. I haven't even finished Code Veronica yet. Damn the hype around RE4.

Going back to the other games in the RE series after RE4 is the equivalent of playing a traditional point-and-click adventure version of Ninja Gaiden.

RE4 isn't so different from the previous ones when it comes down to hunting shit like medallions, keys, etc. I love the previous games (top 3 series for me,) but RE4 corrected the problems of the other games by having larger inventory screens and by throwing more vicious enemies into the mix. RE0 will annoy the shit out of you because you will spend at least three hours total of the time you play just moving your ammo, etc from one area to the other because of the lack of a box to put things in. It annoyed me so much that there was a six month gap between the time I started RE0 and the time that I went back to finish it. No other RE has ever annoyed me so much that I put the game off for a while. I would play RE4 now if I were you so you could have fun talking about it here while it's still hot and in the mix. REMAKE is also beautiful (top 10 on the GC easily and was in the top 5 till RE 4 came around) and the second best RE but I would go with RE 4 over that for now too.

RE4 is very different from the previous RE games, so I don't think a direct comparison is appropriate. RE4 is more of an action game, with the exploration and puzzle solving being secondary.

I liked RE0 more than RE remake.

If you skip RE0, you will miss the greatest "WTF" moment in the entire series:
Giant scorpian crashes through the ceiling of a moving train
[/sarcasm]

This is exactly the reason I haven't bought RE4, eventhough I'm dying to play it. I haven't finished RE Zero. Hell, I got it at launch and have only gotten to the part at the beginning where the guy, I think(or was it both characters?), gets off the train.

I know that if I get RE4, the other RE games will feel unplayable, no matter how much I like them.

:lol that's where I am. Unfortunately, have no motivation to play it beyond that.

Whoa. I never had 40+ replies on my threads. neverbefore. :)

Yeah. I wrote that post regarding not playing to perfect but just for fun. I intend to re-play MGS, not to perfect it but it's just so damned fun - although having knowing the story will lessen the fun this time around, I'm pretty sure...

RE0 on the other hand, I still am in the debate after reading up the entire thread over again. (Hey, my blood type is A+, so I can be super indecisive. ;)) I'm just worried because if I miss out RE0, which I'm pretty sure that it will be GC exclusive for quite some time(and one of the reasons that I bought my GC for is definitely for RE series), I will feel like I didn't use the toilet paper after taking a large dump. Then again, more I hear regarding greatness of RE4, more inclined to start the game right away. It seems like there's no real connection between RE4 and RE0. RE:make was a bit too stressful for my taste, so if RE0 is anything more stressful than RE:make, then I might just skip.

Damn it, I'll probably have to flip a quarter to decide. ;)

Thanks all for your input!

I liked RE0 (I won't waste time discussing its merits versus the others, I like 'em all) and it is actually next on my plate to play on GC. Had everything unlocked on an old memory card that was sold with my first GC...but I like the game enough to play through all over again.

Personally, I would just stick with REmake and RE4 and pretend that none of the series' medicore sequels ever existed. REmake at least has an air of mystery to it that made it more frightening than its sequels, and suffering through its flaws is worth it for moments like the shark tank, and the first appearance of the Hunters. The Crimson Heads and new boss were great additions to the game as well.

RE Zero I can't recommend. It had a few neat enemies but that's about it. The lack of item boxes created more problems than it fixed, the story is riddled with continuity errors, and the whole Umbrella's newest virus strain thing had long worn its welcome at this point.

RE4 I can't praise highly enough. Everybody needs to play this game whether they hate RE or not. I hate to say something like this while a game is so fresh, but I think it will end up being my favorite game this generation. It shames every horror game to date and will probably force the entire industry to rethink how they make horror games, and hell, all action and adventure games period. Can you imagine playing another horror game with brain dead RE1-style zombies after this? I certainly can't. Silent Hill 2 still has the best characters and plot of any horror game out there, but RE4 has the best gameplay.

RE4 isn't so different from the previous ones when it comes down to hunting shit like medallions, keys, etc. I love the previous games (top 3 series for me,) but RE4 corrected the problems of the other games by having larger inventory screens and by throwing more vicious enemies into the mix.

I didn't find getting keys and crap anywhere near as annoying in RE4 as previous games, since the game doesn't suffer from the endless backtracking of previous games (usually key items are found very near where they're actually used) and key items no longer take up inventory space.

I'm still playing RE4 atm and it's fantastic. I still really like REmake though as the atmosphere and the scares are incredible! Graphics look so beautiful too. RE:0 is ok but it wouldn't really matter if you didn't play it.

I honestly can't remember the other games in the series that well. Only played them once (RE2 and CV)

REMake remains highly recommended. They hit on almost all the right notes for a serious update, and the tone and graphics of REMake is more serious than the other REs. RE4 for different reasons, being more of a supremely addictive shooter than the others.

Didn't CVXFreak post a huge story summary on the Resident Evil series leading up to RE4?

Just read that instead and go play RE4. I almost bought that PURE EVIL pack, as I found it for 20 bucks, but I can't do it. I can't go back to the old gamestyle. It is so putrid in comparison to the awesomeness of RE4. To this day, I still wonder how the hell I completed both Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2.

Play RE4 instead.

Here is how RE4 is different that the others.

Better controls. You're actually in control this time although I personally didn't think the controls in the previous RE games were THAT bad.
Emphasise is on action this time and not horror. There are a few scary moments but the game is basicly dead to rights meets Resident Evil. Nothing bad with that.
Puzzles are much easier than before. They are too easy.
You can find ammo's everywhere. So waste them as you want. You'll find more of them.
