Resistance Burning Skies |OT| Extinguishing the Flames of Vitality

Nihilistic definitely pulled off the feel of Resistance's unique arsenal. The mule is a beast that will gib pretty much anything. And the hunter rifle with upgraded three shot burst is a headshot machine. They even have the best melee attack in the series.

Hell yeah, the Mule is a great weapon. As you say, the weapons are all very Resistance. In fact the whole thing feels very Resistance - they did a fantastic job on that front.

After reading this thread, I'm actually quite surprised by the demo. Wasn't that bad imo.
Still some concerns about the length though, but if the MP is decent, that won't be much of a problem. Still....an amazing experience to play a FPS , with 2 analog sticks on a handheld device.

While playing the demo, the double tap on the touchpad works but am I the only one who would've preferred a swipe down gesture? Think it would be even better

That would be incredibly easy to do by accident if you hold the console in a certain way though. Double tapping is just the right balance between easy to do and hard to do by accident, IMO

I just finished the campaign, enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm surprised an fps played that well on a handheld. The recoil felt a little too severe sometimes considering the sticks & screen size, but I liked that there seemed to be no autoaim bullshit. The last boss was frustrating until I figured out how to kill it, mostly because you have to run down that fucking corridor every time it kills you. Fuck that shit, don't waste my battery life with a crappy checkpoint. I'd give it a solid 7, maybe 7.5. I'm anxious to play more multiplayer when they get it fixed. I would definitely buy a Vita sequel, I would just hope that it was a few hours longer. Can't wait for more fps/cover tps games for this thing!

I was able to get into a multiplayer game last night, and road the group until I get tired and quit out a few games later. The latency was pretty decent, but several things annoyed me:
  • Players can block entrance ways and stairwells in really high-traffic areas, so I found myself getting stuck in front of a teammate where neither would move for at least ten seconds.
  • When an enemy kills it a teammate, it shows exactly where they were. It makes the game feel cheap to me, even more so than when a radar reveals an enemy's position when they're firing. The indicator appears as an icon over their position, and it's visible from anywhere in the map.
  • Multiplayer feels very bare bones. I only played a bit, but it just felt like I was mindlessly running around the map and shooting at anything I saw. I guess this sounds like most FPS games, but it felt like it distinctly lacked tactics. I could be mistaken on this, considering I've only played a handful of matches (though I usually broke even in my K/D ratio).
I'm about to give the multiplayer another shot -- assuming I can get it to work -- and see whether or not it feels too repetitive.

I personally do not like pressing the rear touch pad for sprinting. It's fine to do, but sometimes the sprint stops after a second and it's a pain to keep tapping the back touch pad. I find it much easier to just tap the D-Pad down. I do not agree with the person who said rear touch pad (or even D-pad for that matter) is better than L3 sprint at all.

And is anyone else impressed with how responsive the menus are? It seems like nobody is giving it notice, but I feel it's a really well done menu system.

Not sure how much there is to unlock.

I'm excited to team up with some friends and utilize party chat while playing. At least, I hope that's possible.
I just went through the load outs:
- 5 weapons to unlock (up to level 30).
- 6 upgrades for each weapon -- 3 "A" upgrades and 3 "B" upgrades (A Upgrades peak at level 24, B upgrades peak at level 29).
- 1 grenade to unlock (at level 2)
Again, a very barebones multiplayer. But the content is there for people to get at least a few hours of enjoyment out of it. After playing several matches last night I am still level 1.

Halo has been doing pretty much the same thing since 2004 with great results. It did not bother me one bit when I was playing last night..

Has it? I'm pretty sure Halo just shows when your teammate is firing, when they're being fired at, and when they're dead. I'm almost positive you don't get an indicator of the enemy from across the map.

And it didn't bother me too much, just annoyed me. I failed to mention that I was overall impressed that I was playing a console-like competitive multiplayer match on a handheld. I guess focusing on my annoyances wasn't the best way to communicate that =]

If the game makes a snazzy noise when you level up in multi it will sell trillions.

The only reason COD is popular (lol) is because of that little tune it makes when you level something up or complete a challenge.

SO GOOD.

how do you know gameloft games are longer than 4 hrs? I don't know anyone who has been able to play a gameloft game for longer than 30 minutes before getting pissed off and not playing it anymore.

to be somewhat judicious with criticism, 4-5 (or 6 hours) plus multiplayer seems fairly standard these days.

The IGN 85% review for Modern Combat 3 puts the campaign at 5+ hours.

While I am enjoying the game, the overall quality of the finished product is definitely debatable.

That said, I know one thing for certain: I absolutely can not wait for a triple-A FPS on the Vita, especially one that has some real depth to it. I seriously think that a sizable portion of my enjoyment of Burning Skies is due to the fact that I'm playing an FPS on a handheld device, and it controls flawlessly. Goodbye stylus, goodbye virtual sticks.

About. Friggin'. Time.

So... Should I open my copy or return it? I'm so confused! D:

Well, i'd say open it. Did you enjoy the demo? Do you like Resistance games?

Honestly i think the games faults have been blown way out of proportion by most reviewers. Yes, the graphics aren't brilliant. It sounds like dog turd. But it's FUN. It controls amazingly well. The story is typical Resistance, the weapons are typical Resistance. It's has a great feel to it.

And honestly, i've kind of forgotten about the graphics while playing. They're not distractingly terrible.

Anyway, it's a fun game. If you liked the demo and are a Resistance fan, i say go for it.

I'm actually surprised by the impressions here. The game actually doesn't sound too bad. Might pick it up after Gravity

Uh, so I picked this up anyway on an impulse.

Am I a bad person if I'm
really enjoying it? ^_^
It's nice to finally play a working FPS on handheld too.

Does the game ever explain why Tom Riley's health regenerates? Every other installment there was an actual story so I cannot remember a thing with Burning Skies.

I loved how the patch notes said "Fixed rare issue where player couldn't join game."
