i posted this in the sony press conference thread but it's too diverse in there now.

Reuters - Sony unveils range of development tools for PS3

- Sony acquired Britain's SN Systems Ltd. and formed strategic alliances with U.S. based Ageia Technologies Inc., Havok and Epic Games to provide more tools

- PS3 will feature a graphics chip with 300 million transistors, more than the combined processing power of Xbox, GameCube and PlayStation 2

- development costs of a high-end game for PS3 gen will rise to $15-20 million, from $10 million this gen

- white psp sept 15th, japan, 24,800 yen [$220] with accessories

- 5.07* million PSP units shipped worldwide, expected to ship 12 million in the current business year

- more than 150 games for PSP by March 2006

- plans to increase the monthly manufacturing of umd disks to 5 million [from 3 million] in anticipation of greater demand for movies

1) Acquired SN? Nice! They've been making the tool chain since forever, good to see them bring it in house.

2) Would be nice if they had increased UMD production in anticipation of greater demand for games...

September 15th? 220$? :D
It's like it's too good to be true. I guess I'll buy another PSP for my birthday :lol DS will wait (again) :P

if high end games for the PS3 will "only" cost 1.5\2 as much as high end PS2 games it's not so bad. I can't imagine companies not selling enough to make profits even at this cost.

Heh, white PSP comes out on my birthday. :)

It is very sexy, but I think I'll stick with my current. Can't wait for firmware 2.0, though. Now I just hope the PSP makes a great showing at TGS. :(

Wow. SN Systems makes great tools. Sony is really trying to make deving for PS3 easy.

What about Nvidia' CG language? Is that a part of their tools, as well?

Good move for Sony to buy SN - devs had been bellyaching about the Linux-based dev environment on PS2 that Sony provides, and almost everyone has ponied up for SN's tools (or Codewarrior) so they can work on a Windows machine. Looks like they're trying to avoid that mistake for PS3...

SN also made tools for Nintendo - so I kinda wonder what this means for Nintendo? (SN never made tools for Xbox, probably because the MS provided tools are very good - hard to compete with MS in this area)

Hmmmm...

Not on Sony's site yet.

So for the quarter:

4.15M PS2's shipped
2.1M PSP's shipped

Those are very good numbers for a second quarter:
2001: 4.3M PS2's shipped in Q2
2002: 4.6M PS2's shipped in Q2
2003: 2.6M PS2's shipped in Q2
2004: 0.71M PS2's shipped in Q2

Why the hell does Sony ship that much?

NPD numbers have the PSP at 1.3 million.
Japan numbers have the PSP at 1.6 million.

I wondered why there were like 20 PSPs at my Target. Some still have the Spider-Man UMD with it, too. :lol

i think the ps3 dev tools news is great!

anything that allows developers a quicker and easier path to creating the games they want to make is a good thing.

Yep. I thought they were going to use the standard OpenGL shading language, but they are using CG.
