Revised DS hardware to be released in Japan Spring 2006?

I've been holding out for a redesign. I hope it looks good (and arrives soon).

I was gonna get a DS this year, but I guess now I have to wait and see what happens with this redesign rumour, I don't wanna get caught out like I did with the GBA.

I'll likely snag this up if it's stamped metal like the GBAmicro --- we need more stamped metal, and not spraypainted plastic that gets all scratched up.

They could proboboly make the DS more compact, but the touchscreen needs to remain the same size I would think --- so no smaller screen, possibly brightness settings..... Also, I hope that the DSsp doesn't wabble on a flat surface like the DS (YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO USE IT WHILE IT'S ON A FLAT SURFACE WITHOUT WABBLE DAMMIT!) .... both my DS's wabble slightly, 'cause the battery cover.

and for christ's sake, don't but volume 'button-clickers' on the fucker.... (lookin at you PSP and micro!) ...... the slider is more functional, and you can actually mute it before you turn the damn thing on....

DS NEEDS REDESIGN, BADLY

awful to look at, worse to hold. moronic recessed headphone jack. wee ridges around the grip that were put there specifically to dig into your hands. screens starting to look a bit tacky. i'd say "worst design ever," but the original gba with patented inviso-screen and the sidetalkin' n-gage that you have to disassemble when you want to put a game in would object.

A fake made a months ago, i think that nintendo should make a "design" for theirs non-gamers (aka touch! generation) consoles and the Rev desing its really cool, apply it to DS SP? :)

I love it! However, I think I'd love it so much that I'd be afraid to play it.

I usually hate when someone makes fake designs, but that is genuinely one of the best designs I've seen for a handheld. Especially one that just MUST be dual screened (*sigh*). Now if it doesn't look exactly like that, it'll only be disappointing :|

No, you see, this design would be TOO NICE...

you forget, Nintendo has to fuck things up on purpose. It's their job !

This coming from someone who has a DS and loves it...

but god damn...

The Rev is a step in the right direction in terms of design...

they better do it nice the next time around !

GBMicro looks sweet too :) and yes, Rev its the example to follow.

aside from redesigning the hardware, I hope they add some good software to a DS re-issue, like something that puts PictoChat online and allows it to be used as a hub for setting up and playing wi-fi games, or a simple PDA/day planner app; they have a calender, an alarm, and pictochat, making these three into a day planner is a no brainer and I'd buy a re-issue just for that

Looks neat, but an engineering nightmare. Needs space for the mobo, and the thing would be quite thick considering it would need to stack two screens, a mobo and the controls. PEACE.

weren't there rumors of a PSP2 to come out before xmas?

i hope its a ds that is moe inline to work with the revolution, would make sense for a redesign.

That's a sexy design, but I love the speakers on the DS. I don't want them to take a hit.

Fucked up, and posted a topic of this earlier (it was quickly murdered) :lol. Anyway, basically I just ripped the PSP Mini Design , and added a few Bits & Pieces. Looks like crap (my PS skillz sucks), but its a general idea of what I would like to see for a reworked PSP.

Well if you have to have pretty strong fingertips to hold that thing while using the 2 analog nubs ;)

Wait... are those 2 screens and a touchscreen there? I mean c'mon.

A thinner DS for $99 & I am sold. :)
Why would it be cheaper then the current DS? :lol

I see L2 and R2 buttons indicated at the top... how thick would this thing be or how small are those shoulder buttons?

ds sp was on the way since they released ds. expect nintendo to make redesigning a company policy from now on with all pillars. expect rev sp spring 2008. booyakasha.

Nah, not even for the PSP 2 I would think. That is what your mockup is about, right?

Though I wouldn't be suprised to find some individual parts from that design on it (PSP 2), like the second analouge nub, touch screen (I doubt it'd be on a second screen though) and a revised digi-pad (again, I doubt it'd look like that).

The DS SP is inevitable.

Three things it absolutely requires, IMHO:
1.) Thinner (not necessarily smaller) form factor
2.) GB Micro/Revolution style D-Pad
3.) GBA SP2/Micro screens

If it's still clamshell I wouldn't expect a GB Micro style Dpad. The current one is actually really good IMO.

The one other thing that I really want to see is the screens closer together, say no more than 1/4" between them (though 1/8" is far more preferable). This will make vertical games more feasible overall.

I doubt they will make the screens closer together as some games such as metroid pinball already take in to account the distance between the two screens.

The DS d-pad is great, much better than any prior GBA d-pad. But the GB Micro d-pad is one of the best I've ever used!

But, I was talking more aesthetically. The GB Micro d-pad is identical (in style) to the Revolution d-pad, what with the - and | lines at each cardinal point.

The most important feature they need to add to the DS redesign is the ability to customize the face buttons for GBA games. I'm tired of using the shoulder buttons for them while the Y & X buttons go to waste.

Absolutely! Someone here who has a connection at Nintendo better point this out to them. I hate, hate, hate those damn L+R buttons!

A DS redesign would be nice, but I would only consider getting it if they put in better screens (more brighter and vibrant).

The superior buttons of the MICRO FTW!

Eww! NO!! The Speakers need to stay where they are so that the sound continues to sound surprisingly decent.

Don't worry, the design takes this into account. It has the slight annoyance of speakers that can easily enough be obscured by your thumb region.

I hope it goes with the GB micro's recharge port so we can have link up for the GBA. GB/GBC compatibility would be nice, too. I believe the SP released just under two years after the original GBA, so if we went by that schedule we'd be seeing one in November. But clearly the DS might be early.

Do you prefer the GBA SP? I sure don't. I can't even go back to it after playing the DS. It feels cramped, my fingers have to curl way around to reach the shoulder buttons, my hands overlap on the back of it, and it has a moronic lack of a headphone jack.

I'd settle for this one. Of course it doesn't account for the fact that the buttons would be preventing it from closing correctly...

DS SP also needs an updated PictoChat so that it can go online. Also a built-in PDA would be useful with the touch screen.

who even cares about handheld sound quality anymore if you're not using headphones? and even with headphones, who cares? Just look at the ipod's success.

what you want is a PDA, not a DS.

I'm worried... I'd buy a DS SP straight away, without hesitating...

Nintendo bets these re-designs on ppl like me >_<

but I have managed to avoid micro :p

Like washing your car...I just bought one. Dammit all.
