Revolution: Mid 2006

I think Nintendo is going to end up keeping 'Revolution' as the hardware name, kind of like what MS did with the Xbox project name.

It just came to be known as Xbox throughout its development history through media and what not that it just made sense.

The media (mainstream) have already written quite a few articles pertaining to the Revolution, and hey, it sounds good.

Who knows really, but I hope they keep 'Revolution.'

Which one, Project Midway or Xenon?

I wouldn't mind the name either. It's snappier than Dolphin, StarCube, or GameCube, at least.

But then again, Nitro would've been a cool name for the DS.

Therefore, I doubt it's the final name. Nintendo wouldn't want people to start being able to remember and recognize their product names! That might improve brand awareness!

Just struck me that, unlike with the GC, 1T-SRAM may only be for GPU edram this time around..so not definite yet that this will be the main RAM provider. Probably likely, though.

as I said at the end of the first page, originally the Dolphin was only going to have 1T-SRAM for the GPU embedded memory, not main memory. then that was changed.

why you don't believe me?

Nintendo New Sexy has been on GAF for a few days now...

Naw, he's not kidding.

We argued about who used it first the other day, and we've both been using it extensively ever since :)

I think Nitro would have been a terrible name.

I was dissapointed the Ultra Nintendo changed to Nintendo 64.

GameCube originally sounded really pathetic to me... but after awhile I realized it made sense. Play + Station, X + Box, finally Game + Cube. I mean, stations, boxes, and cubes. At least its a theme.

I like the Revolution. I also did like Nexus though. We'll see. As long as its not called like Nintendo Gyro or something. Or GameCube 2. But they'll never do that cause of the stigma.

Yeah, like the DS, which Nintendo insisted would not be the final name. It grew on everyone, people knew it by that name by the time it came out. I think the Nintendo Revolution System is gonna be it's final name or something. At least the Revolution will be in it. I mean, it not only makes perfect sense to keep it, but it fits with tradition!

NES -> Nintendo Entertainment System
SNES -> Super Nintendo Entertainment System
UNS -> Ultra Nintendo System (Later changed to Ultra 64, and then just Nintendo64)
NDS -> Nintendo's Developer System
NRS -> Nintendo's Revolution System

Okay, time for baseless launch period speculation...

Japan
-Xbox 360~ November 2005
-PlayStation 3~ March 2006
-Revolution~ June 2006

North America
-Xbox 360~ November 2005
-Revolution~ August 2006
-PlayStation 3~ September 2006

Europe
-Xbox 360~ February 2006
-PlayStation 3~ October 2006
-Revolution~ December 2006

that ring any bells with anyone from another post with a certain troubled youth holding a disk?

Michael "TYP" says: I was just talking with Deguello last night about Nintendo treating June as a serious launch timeframe this year. A Revolution launch for "school's out" month seems reasonable, especially if Nintendo (and Sony) want to reduce Microsoft's lead time with the Xbox360

Lets ignore the two obvious selling times - Chrismas/Thanksgiving, or easter. Instead lets go for when the schools let out for the Summer holidays. that way we're bound to shake off our 'kiddy' image.

Fucktards. Its like a cute little puppy that keeps shitting on your carpet. You love it to bits but want to punch it in its nose so bad.

If New Sexy launches as late behind PS3 as you said above in Japan than = bad bad bad bad news.

I just looked it up, last day of summer is September 21st, and the other years I saw seem to pretty much that date too.

Okay, gofreak is crazy. And this is northern hemisphere stuff btw.

I want the mods to make New Sexy a bannable catch phrase.

Jarrod. You want to explain how you came to that March launch for PS3 and June launch for Rev claim?

August is Fall.

Nov-Jan: Winter
Feb-Apr: Spring
May-Jul: Summer
Aug-Oct: Autumn (Fall)

I never payed much attention to how companies classify seasons. If the above is "true," that's really lame.

Not in America.

Dec-Feb: Winter
Mar-May: Spring
Jun-Aug: Summer
Sep-Nov: Fall

That makes more sense.

even with the name Revolution, and any new controller or even 3D display of some kind (As rumored), the Revolution is still very much Gamecube2`GC2`GCN2`GCNext, inside.

in the USA, August is summer (the Nintendog days of summer)

its summer from June 21st until Sept 21st.

fall is Sept 21 to Dec 21st

winter is Dec 21st to March 21st

spring is March 21st to June 21st

That's the same for the entire northern hemisphere, not just the US.

Don't think so..unless I learned my seasons wrong, which could be very possible! :lol

edit - a quick google agrees with you! I'm having one of those "shattered reality" moments, lol

edit 2 - ahh..redemption! it's an irish thing: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_170b.html. i always worked my seasons around summer starting in may. sorry for the confusion!

Just like Microsoft, right?

Wheeee, baseless speculation is my favorite part of GAF! Ok, here's mine:

Japan
Xbox 360: March 2006
Playstation 3: May 2006
Nintendo Revolution: June 2006

Europe
Xbox 360: December 2005
Playstation 3: November 2006
Nintendo Revolution: Fuck You, 2007

North America
Xbox 360: November 2005
Playstation 3: November 2006
Nintendo Revolution: September 2006

No matter what the exact dates are, it seems that all three will launch within a short period in Japan. I can't see Microsoft rushing to get the system out in Japan this year when almost all the rumored launch titles are western, and heavy on FPS gameplay. If they can launch earlier in Europe and still beat Sony to a Japanese release, that's the way to go.

I have the PS3 coming a little later everywhere, just because of wrangling with the technology, and the desire to launch with a strong lineup in each territory. With a lot of first-party development still tied up in the PSP and PS2, I think Sony is going to make sure their usual allies have some big games ready to go.

Was it? I hadn't heard. I know the original rumors had it coming out in Europe simultaneous with the NA launch or just after it.

Oh well, this is why it's baseless speculation :)

Wasn't it already "confirmed" that the 360 won't be launching in Europe till next year?

I'd expect it in Europe before the end of the year, but nothing's for sure.

Well, I will give MS some credit here:

They will launch in the US for sure first, while Japan has to wait, just like the uS does when their new hardware comes out.

But then again, will the Japanese really give a shit about the 360 anyways?

Well the problem with Revolution is that it's pretty common. There are probably at least a couple hundred companies that have trademarks involving the word "Revolution."

Not that that in itself would stop them, but it's just preferrable to start off with something more unique. With PlayStation, Gamecube, and Xbox, there is 1 company that uses each name.

Even with the term "Xbox", which was obviously more obscure 5 or 6 years ago than something like "Revolution", another company (Xbox Technologies) had the name first, so Microsoft had to pay them for the rights to the name.

Nintendo would have to wade through hundreds and hundreds of trademarks and make sure there aren't any conflicts, and possibly pay off some people if any were found (could be a nice payout for Revolution Technologies :p).
