Revolution on Amazon.fr - June 16 2006

Here's the article from Gizmodo. It comes to $365 USD:

Amazon.com France has slipped a page with the European release date and price for Nintendo’s monolithic new game console, the Revolution. The release date is listed as June 15, 2006. The total, after conversion, would be about $365. European console prices tend to be a bit higher than here in the U.S., but this still sounds like a fool’s ransom given the Xbox 360’s $299-$399 pricetag. (Remember that Nintendo says its console will be less technologically advanced and thus cheaper than the Xbox 360 or PS3). Based on the GameCube’s 2001 launch cycle—it arrived in Europe six months after it debuted in N.A.—this leak gives credence to rumors that the Revolution could see a surprise 2005 launch.

Either that, or Nintendo is doing some very cheeky marketing.

Ok, this is almost certainly them just picking a date and price out the air, but the bit about the 'surprise 2005 launch' is interesting speculation and not the first time it's been rumoured. So lets enter wild speculation mode!

Just assuming the very unlikely did happen, and that it's available in time for Christmas, that could explain Zelda's delay.

Delaying Zelda makes sure the spotlight on the Revolution, and at the same time boosts the amount of sales Zelda may get when it's launched because it's selling to both the GC and 6 months of new Revolution userbase because of backwards compatibility (and possible Revolution extras).

Hmmmm! :D

Has any console ever had a "surprise launch"?

The Saturn did. It was a disaster. Games weren't finished (Daytona & Virtua Fighter both had updates later), the price was $400, no one really bought it becuase there was no hype, and the system ended up looking dated by the time the PSX launched.

(Oh what the hell, never replying to a thread after having the reply window open for 2 minutes again.)

I would welcome the next Nintendo console with open arms and wallet just to play new Nintendo games again (GC release schedule WTF?).

But early adopter money will start to be siphoned off for X360 this Christmas, so Nintendo need to be careful about how much notice they give people. I'd buy one and my X360, but how many others would?

Is there any restriction on websites opening preorders when a launch date isn't available? do they take any money off you?

What's with that slanted stand

I wondered that originally. Then it struck me - easier vertical disc loading.

By having the console and drive slanted slightly upwards, the slot loading drive is more accessible as well as being slightly easier to load the discs as gravity is with them.

They're just setting the price high to protect themselves.

You know who suggested we'd be getting revolution news soon anyway, perhaps it's a more specific launch timetable and Amazon.fr was acting on similar information as everyone's favorite IGN editor.

I think it's made up. "June 16" or 15th is like a regular date or something? Like, June is right in the middle of the year, and the 16th is right in the middle of the month. Amazon took the info "release date in 2006" and just put a date like that for shits and giggles, apparently.
