Revolution (tentative)

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
I found this interesting out of Nintendo's latest annaul report...

So, Revolution is a "tentative" name for the next console? Not a "codename"? That would be pretty brash of them to stick with that name. I personally liked the idea of calling it "Revolution"... before the design was revealed. For some reason the slick, minimalist box seems to need a acronym "non-name" like DS or XP. A name like "Revolution" or something eqaully loaded with meaning would step on the toes of the image the box is trying to project. I guess we still have to see what the actual "interface" looks like. Which might fit the name "Revolution" better than we think.




On a related note, there's a chance that the Revoltuon may be cancelled!

Uh, actually, that sounds like Nintendo's literally referring to the technology (i.e. chips, parts) to construct the machine, and that could cause a delay, which would potentially cause a loss in market share.
 
Without reading the report, my guess is that statements like those are all over annual reports, and this isn't news.

Companies can be legally obligated to investors by their future-looking statements unless they make the appropriate disclaimers in writing which basically say, "This is how we think it will go, but we could be wrong...bottom line is, it's your money, so don't sue us."
 
Hum, I was going to start a thread yesterday asking what people thought the next gen Nintendo would be called. I hope it isn't called Revolution, although it's an OK name. I'd like something snappier, and if it is to be in some way revolutionary, I think it should be launched with a (more or less) unexpected name. Like ...

NES5
Tetra-Nintendo
Spielberg
GAMEBASTARD
Blitzcube
Syzygy

Or something relating to features we don't know about yet. Good job Nintendo on keeping everyone guessing btw! The selction of a name for their home consoles is actually quite a curious business.
 
I'm started to think the no A&B button rumor is true, but not in the way to give the impression that the controller will have less buttons. I don't think the buttons will be labeled with letters. No more a,b,x,y, just a left, right, up, down. All the buttons will be one color.

Its a simple design, include to shoulder buttons similar to the SNES controller. How about buttons that have analog movement under the two shoulder buttons. With a switch that allows you turn analog movement off when need be, making it a regular button.

Just thinking up some shit.
 
Why not call it "Nintendo"
that is all people need to know. they don't put "NEW BMW 5-SERIES" on every new version of the BMW. dust a series number is enough. in this case, "Nintendo" will do just fine :)
 
N64 used to be the 'Ultra' console - I think that name's been played ...

Responding to Timen, Nintendo could really do with being able to settle on something simple and incremental. They can't leave it as just 'Nintendo', as you could never then discuss which of their consoles a game was made for (unless the download system expands in future generations to make such questions irrelevant), although I do see where you're coming from. Sony have a nice thing going with the PS... brand, and it seems Microsoft are attempting to find their own firmest identity. Nintendo will always be best summed up simply by the name of the company, but these boxes gotta have names; and good ones.

They've really seemed to somehow fit the machines, in the past. The SNES was the NES on steroids, for example. The N64 was chunky, stubby, insufficient, ineffectual. The Gamecube is a nonentity, the console that went under the radar; cube-shaped. Not that these characteristics were the plan from the start, except maybe with the SNES and the Cube, but it's the classic case of owners coming to resemble their dogs. I really think this naming business is giving important people headaches and sleepless nights! I really doubt we'll be playing Nintendo Revolutions in a year or twos time, but what codeword has stuck around this long in the past? Only the DS ...

Anyway, I hope for something, simple, and cool.

To go along with its ease of develpment etc like the DS

Don't think it'll be Revolution System as its too much of a statement

It can easily take months to prepare the full report, and since they only made the announcement of Revolution as the official name about a week before they first released this, I wouldn't necessarily take the inclusion of "tentative" as a clear sign that they're thinking of changing the name.

With that said, all 3 hardware makers still have the ability to change the names of their system at any point.

Sony could still decide to call their system"PlayStation 363" if they wanted.
 
They're probably gonna keep their DS strategy, which is not change the name. I'm sure they're gonna find something to do with it marketing wise.

Maybe they could do THE NEXT LEVEL type of advertising MS was doing at the beginning of this gen.

"The grass looks like REAL GRASS!" and whatnot. I guess the teaser commercials for both Xbox and DS were somewhat effective.
 
This is a pretty interesting thread. Recently I've been thinking what the Revolution should be called. First of all, it should definately not be called Revolution. It's a too big word. I also read in the Gamecube am failure already dead thread that some people don't know that it's a Nintendo console. That could be a problem. The Nintendo Gamecube is the first Nintendo system that you could refer to without saying 'Nintendo'. Let's look at how all Nintendo consoles were named and how everybody called them:

1) Nintendo Entertainment System or Famicom for Japan. People called this thing the NES or just Nintendo. I think just plain 'Nintendo' was a far more popular abbreviation.

2) Super Nintendo Entertainment System or Super Famicom for Japan. People called this thing the SNES or just Super Nintendo. I think just plain 'Super Nintendo' was a far more popular abbreviation (am I starting to sound repetitive here?).

3) Nintendo 64. People called this thing the Nintendo 64 as far as I am aware of. So this was the third system that you really needed you to say 'Nintendo'.

4) Nintendo Gamecube. People call this the Gamecube. So you don't need to say Nintendo for the first time. :/

5) I think it should be called something that requires you to say Nintendo. Like, Nintendo 5. Nintendo Five. Well, that sounds kinda corny, but it would make a nice logo. :)

P.S. I was about to start a new thread... and at the last moment I decided to search (Thank God.. :lol).
 
They could just go with "Nintendo" and give the unit a model number.

ie. ALBA-103. It's a DVD player with a plain old Alba logo on the front of it.

It will obviously be new to people if it's being advertised right. The new video game player from Nintendo. Wireless online multiplayer. Wireless pads. Wireless electricity. Holograms. Nintendo.

PlayStation 3 - 4 syllables
Xbox 360 - 5 syllables

:lol What I meant with that was that the meaning is too great. Revolution. That implies something great, not something little. Entertainment in my opinion is little, no matter how fucking awesome it is. For Nintendo, it implies something great. That's probably why they chose that as the code-name.

Nintendo V sounds frickin' awesome so far.
 
I'd like the name to include the word "entertainment" like in the old consoles as well as the number "512" so that it wouldn't look inferior to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

E.g. "Nintendo Revolution Entertainment System 512" aka "RES" or "Nintendo RES".

That's terrible. They shouldn't even bother with numbers, Revolution is on a whole new level and doesn't compare to PS3 or Xbox 360 either way. Oh yeah.
 
Rigth because everyone will say "Revolution" instead of "Rev".

I personally like the Revolution name. It should be named, Nintendo Revolution though, not just Revolution. Or Nintendo Rev.

They need a name where the sub-title behaves more like a modifier for the name "NINTENDO". They did that with all the consoles for the exception of Gamecube.

1.) NES
2.) Super Nintendo (Couldn't just call it Super, had to pronounce the whole thing)
3.) Nintendo 64 (Same thing, couldn't call it "64")

4.) Nintendo Gamecube (This is where they messed up. Someone at GAF had posted a story where a gamer didn't know that the "Gamecube" was a Nintendo console. Gee, I wonder why...)
