Bloody hell. American's won't know who he is but if you live in the uk and at somepoint in your life have been a student/unemployed/old you've watched countdown. He was a British Institution. The worst thing is it's completely out of the blue.

It's never completely out of the blue when a 61-year-old has pneumonia, but it's a sad day nevertheless...

We all will go in the not too distant future (relatively speaking). Good luck on your new journey Richard, it is just the beginning.

I only just found out, but still very depressing.
He was a great guy. I wonder how my folks are going to fill the Countdown void now.
 
I was watching one of the pre-recorded shows yesturday, they showed a shot of the audience, besides the contestants and carol, Whitely was the youngest person in the room by about 20 years...real injustice.


Day time tv will never be the same.
