The Office star Ricky Gervais will write an upcoming episode of The Simpsons, it has been revealed tonight.

Matt Groening, creator of the cult cartoon series, confirmed that Gervais had been signed up to pen an episode - in addition to making a cameo in the show.

"Everybody on The Simpsons are fans of The Office - it's one of the best shows on TV in the last decade," Groening said recently. "So we are going to write Ricky into the show."

Gervais will appear as his alter-ego David Brent in the cameo, although it is unknown whether he will be writing the same episode.

"The Office is something that's surfaced in pop culture, which means we have to take someone who's part of it and give them a bit part in the show," Groening said. "To do this, we'll write an episode with a retarded plot that exists mostly to accomodate said bit part, with humor revolving largely around pointing out what the character in the bit part actually does in The Office! It's like satire, only watered-down and stupid!"

Groening then noticed he consisted purely of a shadow, and ran off to attempt to find his former self.

Nice, this should be great compared to the newer episodes they've been showing.

I haven't seen The Office, but I know it's out on dvd. Is it really that good?

I'm fine for him writing an episode, it would be nice to get someone with actual talent back in the Simpsons. But no to a cameo, they're one of the Simpsons major problems right now.

He did, it manifested itself in Futurama.
I completely agree...but now that Futurama's gone, The Simpsons still suck, so I can only conclude that he's gone and lost it again. :/

Groening was on the uk comedy awards show last night. He was rather funny he read a list of stuff the fox censors wouldn't let him put in the Simpsons. Stuff that we in the UK just find funny. Then steven hawking came out to talk about the show as well and he funny to, unfortunately I missed most of what they were saying since I was in another location
