Namco today released online gameplay details for "Ridge Racer(TM) 6," the latest installment in the legendary drift racing series for the Xbox 360(TM). Featuring trademark high-speed arcade racing and breathtaking high-definition visuals, the game lets players compete head to head in online races and download new content via Xbox Live(R) for the first time in the history of the Ridge Racer franchise. "Ridge Racer 6" will be available for the Xbox 360 at launch in North America.

"Ridge Racer 6" takes the celebrated racing series online for the first time with Worldwide Online Multiplayer Battles through Xbox Live. Utilizing a Worldwide Player Matching system, players can match up against drivers from around the world in intense head-to-head drift racing match ups. Players can also upload their personal records from the game’s Time Attack mode to see how they stack up against the rest of the world in a persistent Leader Board and download ghost data to virtually race against friends or test their skills against the best in the world. To complement the online "Ridge Racer 6" community, new game content such as new cars will periodically be made available for download from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Yea, MICROTRANSACTIONS!!!

Funny, the online features sound practically identical to PGR2, which was exciting then. Now, however that sounds nowhere near as interesting as the Live stuff in PGR3. I think it'll be really interesting to see how this fares in the head-to-head saleswise with PGR3....both should be great games whichever wins out in sales, but there's bound to be some cannibalization.

the majority of me thinks, OMG!!! RR6 WITH XBOX 360 VISUALS!!! :D :D :D

but then there's this nagging feeling, microtransactions...

To leech money from the online "Ridge Racer 6" community, new game content such as new cars will periodically be made available for download from the Xbox Live Marketplace.
fixed.

it's coming and i doubt there's anything we can do about it.

I know they are both racing games... but IMO they both have very different appeals... does someone whose looking to get a PGR fix buy RR instead and vice versa? Not if RR6 is anything like the previous ones where the races still really only have what I call "position-holder" opponents...

I still maintain the idea that this is gonna bomb hard on the X360. RR appeals to a pretty dedicated fanbase (that's on the Playstation line) and really doesn't attract new people anymore. PGR3 has the mainstream appeal that RR really never had.

Then you bring NFS into the it which is also a launch title.

Launch title!!!
Still gonna wait for the superior PS3 version? :P

haha superior... even if there is a ps3 version it probably won't offer a comprehensive online mode like the X360 version.

How will the PS3 gamers be able to download new stuff if there is no hard drive?

if it's a launch game then why hasn't namco released any gameplay screens yet?
So that we don't spill any of our precious liquid until the actual day arrives. Then we can splooge it all in one big jizzpool. ONLINE!!! :D

Shit in a handbasket, the marketplace is going to be the downfall of games as we know it.

Only if you believe that pubs/devs will significantly scale back game content just to upset fans and make money via marketplace. It's not gonna happen like that.

In order for the marketplace stuff to work out for pubs games have to first be bought. If it sucks before marketplace it doesnt matter and likely wont be bought anyway. If it's great before marketplace theres nothing to complain about...

oh come on, who wouldn't pay a dollar for a new car sporting the new We <3 Katamari box art?
See I wouldn't mind maybe buying a couple of things from fellow gamers. Maybe a new car with a decal that interests you like you said, but damn it if I'm going to buy stuff from the developer/publisher that should have been included in the actual game to begin with. I mean shit, with game prices expected to rise to $60 this coming gen, it's ridiculous to think that I will have to pay even more to get the full experience from the game that just cost me a couple lapdances.

Sure there is. What you can do about it, is not make any microtransactions. Problem solved. Nobody's forcing you to buy jack shit.

Not do as well as other installments did on PS systems, where they directly faced very little competent competition upon release? Probably. "Bomb hard"? No.

whether i buy anything or not won't change the fact microtransactions are coming, which is what i meant.

and i think a lot of live users will accept it.

and rev users and ps3 users...

nobody should be thinking microtransactions are going to be exclusive to xbox live here..

exactly.

they're gonna be on every platform, and many will get sucked in.

whatever your fave game is, there'll be downloadable content = $$$.

Xbox 360 is the only console that will have a hard drive and the online infrastructure best suited for microtransactions.

Your best form of whining/protest against MICROTRANSACTIONS is to not buy them.

Cause you're sure as shit not goig to stop them.

Nintendo "download our old games for a few buck" DISAGREE.

So downloading NES/SNES/N64 games to Revolution flash memory is going to be free?

Interesting.

GAF exclusive!

Damm you Milhouse beaten by one minute!

Haha, you gotta be kidding. Are these the same complete games you've bought 5 times over already?

Anyway, have you played NES or SNES games lately? The microtransaction content for Xbox 360 games probably have more content in them for the money than most NES and SNES games. You're still paying money for additional content. It is a microtransaction!

Ever play a PC game? Many times expansion packs come out. This is similar idea.

More than likely if the PS3 doesnt have a HDD or a viable form DL content storage we will probably only see the 360 having bonus content available. Damned if you do damned if you dont.

in an issue of EGM there is a quote from polophony digital saying that they wanted to implement microtransactions in GT4 because of how succesfull ebay sellers were making out with MMORPG's Microsoft hardly thought of this idea all by themselves.....

True guys. You're still spending money. I guess I just kind of saw both types of transactions as being somewhat of a different story. But yes, bottom line is all three next gen will have these microtransactions. I still don't agree with them.

Uhh, Namco is not stupid like Capcom.

Either:
1. They got $$ from M$ to make the switch. (Although I doubt this. RR is a relatively simple game and easy to port/add content so its an obvious choice to be a multiplatform moneymaker)
2. They're using their brains and bot being stupid like Capcom (see RE4 announcement ). By releasing RR6 on 360 and NOT announcing other versions they make sure that people are more apt to buy the 360 version when released. After its been out a bit, and they extracted maximum sales theyll announce for systems which are later in the release pipeline. Likely with more content, etc so that they get people who don't own 360s and possibly people who own a 360 but want the extra content they didn't know about.

What is the problem?

I don't see people crying about Expansion Packs on PC
not everybody plays pc games ;)

console gamers are used to one payment per game, not an initial payment then a load of smaller ones.
