i can tell you this much, it's not gonna happen on PS2, or any other current gen system for that matter.

I never knew Ridge Racer 64 performed up to par with most of the PlayStation releases.
im not suprised being that it's the only good car racer on the N64.

Ridge Racer 64 was crap...
Top Gear Rally was awesome...It had a memorable track design on par with games like SEGA RALLY.

Top Gear Rally was supposedly good (was that the one with the teeth car on the purple cover?), but the N64 also had 3 great RUSH games...

THere were two TOP Gear Rally Games. I never liked the second one which had a random track generator that supposedly made you experiment new feelings...
However the first one was the best game for a long time, when his rivals were MRC, F1 Pole Position, VRally...

I nearly tried all the N64 racers and I think Top Gear Rally was the best. The main problem was that it was a bit short.

The game put you in rally courses a la SEGA rally. You had to select your car between a huge selection of models (based in real cars). I remember these ones:

BMW M3
Porsche 968
Nissan Skyline
Lancia Delta
Ford Escort

Then you had to select a track:

-Jungle
-Beach
-Mountain
-Desert
...

And then you just needed to race :) The best point of the game was the track design. Especially the mountain track since it was awesome. You first went up and up on a mountain and then...then you go down ;) But the whole feeling of mountain track was there.
Another good thing was the sortcuts the tracks had. The mountain one was fun because it was a difficult path that was very difficcult to take without breaking the car.
There was also realistic treatment of impacts and real-time deformation.

I was very surprised with this game.

oh, I must have been thinking about this one:

I guess the N64 Top Gear Rally games were good enough so that Nintendo actually took publishing duties for the GBA counterparts this generation...

how depressing. you guys turned this into a top gear thread.

sales figures please, they'd be super appreciated.

I agree, this thread is about RIDGE RACER.

Any figures on RRV or Rage Racer (my two favorites in the series)?

My penis is still intact.
I can't believe how low that RRV figure is. In fact, with he exception of the first game, I'm surprised by all of them. Always thought the series was more popular.

I feel like crying. Everyone who owns a PS2 should own RRV...EVERYONE!!! :(

Don't let WhippenSean see these figures.

The best racer on PS2 can't even break 200k. That's very depressing. :(

Ridge Racer V did about 700-750K in Japan.

I'm just guessing, but I'd say the other 4 RR games did around 500K each in Japan. They've always been popular there.

And I agree that RRV is the best racer on PS2. Hell, I played again less than a month ago, and it still holds up pretty damn well.

BTW, where are the Rage Racer figures?

bear in mind that RRV came out at launch. So although it probably got a pretty good adoption from the early guys, by the time PS2 got into really big numbers, it was long gone from the shelves.

Here's Rage Racer, jeez. :p

PSX RAGE RACER May-97 NAMCO 0 130,758

Still sold as shitty as the rest(with the exception of the first one, I guess). BTW, I REALLY doubt RRV sold 750k. In fact, I'm pretty goddamn sure it didn't get anywhere near there.

P.S.: RR64 is trash.

I remember renting the first Top Gear Rally game for the 64, that game sure had good graphics, I still remember that awesome feeling of driving in the night.

Actually I still see new copies of that game everywhere.

Top Gear Rally was one of my favourite racers of last gen, that and Rage Racer/Ridge Racer Type 4.

And is Ridge Racer V really that good? I only ever played it when PS2 launched on a friend's PS2 which was basically 3 or so years ago. Maybe I should give it a rental.

I presume you mean the jogcon right?

Precisely :)

Though not directly compatible with Logitech's FF wheels due to driver issues, RRV does contain true force feedback code, which the joGcon beautifully recreates. If someone were to write drivers that allow Logitech's wheels to recognize the game, I'm sure the FF effect would be very impressive.

WOW, these are hard to believe. I've always assumed the series had large following, as if it were a flagship title of sorts.

Does anyone have totals for R: Racing Evolution?

You wouldn't happen to remember what R:Racing Evolutions numbers are? I know someone was tracking them (at least for a while) in the old GAF, but I don't remember who. I'm just curious.

No idea, I don't think it broke 100k on any platform though in the US and it flat out bombed in Japan. It was a bad idea all around.

Didn't 'Ridge Racer Next' turn into R: Racing Evolution later on?

Nope, they were different games at first... Racing Evolution started out PS2 only (as "New Racing Project") and took RRNext's place when Team Zero fell apart (with most staff leaving to form Cavia). Namco's been adamant though that Racing Evolution isn't a Ridge Racer game.

It'd be interesting to see what numbers it did on GameCube versus the PS2 and Xbox versions. I'd imagine Pac-Man Vs. being bundled would've helped it somewhat, even if only in comparison to the other two.
