"The outbreak of the Sony-Nintendo handheld war loomed closer today, when the first US title for the PSP went gold. That distinction went to Ridge Racer, Namco Hometek's second portable version of its drift-racing arcade and console series after Ridge Racer DS. Rated "E" for Everyone, the game will go on sale alongside the PSP on March 24.

Sporting 3D graphics on par with its PlayStation 2 cousins, Ridge Racer will also sport revamped tracks from the first Ridge Racer, Rage Racer, R4, Ridge Racer Revolution, and Rave Racer. Although they only start out with three cars, gamers can unlock more by winning events in the world tour mode. The US version of Ridge Racer features a new "MAX Tour" option in world tour mode not available in the Japanese edition, which GameSpot test drove in December.

The game also includes new features such as the addition of a nitrous boost and a wireless battle mode that lets up to eight players race simultaneously via the PSP's 802.11b wireless functionality. "Namco has created a game that takes full advantage of the new platform's wireless connectivity capabilities and offers gamers new to this genre a unique experience," said Namco President and CEO Nobuhiro Kasahara. No, it means you drive the tour bus for MAX's debut US Tour. In Real Time, like in Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors.

Imagine the LA Area to SF Bay Area drive (~7 hours), followed by the drive to Seattle (~14 hours), followed by the drive to Chicago and New York. All in realtime, driving the bus. Sounds like a must buy! :)

Are you one of those guys who washes his hands every time he gets air on them? :)

Get over it -- just buy a PSP already. It's not going to get any better anytime soon.

A new revision with at least better battery life shouldn't be that long in coming. At the very least, they should have some colored versions not too far off.

Cause the multi-colored PS2's are everywhere in the US...

Maybe the battery is slightly better, maybe it isn't. I've never once had a problem with my PSP's battery life. Just get your butt out to the store and get one. You know you want it. :)

Damn, thanks for the explanation dude. Do you know how long that has been bothering me!

:D

Can someone who's played RR tell me how is the analog control, especially compared to the NeGcon? Are the cars easily driftable with the nob?

So is it same to assume that the US version will be released in Japan under the name Ridge Racers ReMIX, with an additional stage and a new music track?

Probably not, if anything the US version's extras might be put into the Japanese "The Best" label which the game will no doubt be re-released under in the future along with Minna no Golf and Dynasty Warriors.

I can't, but I can tell you its fine with the dpad. Its ridge racer for goodness sake, it has one of the best implemented digital control systems there is.

The analog control works very well with RR...The problem is that its size and nature make you feel uncomfortable with it...so you'll end using the big D-PAD. It's not a problem of implementation in the game but about design of it.

BTW, this new mode sounds like crap to me...I was expecting new tracks or music or unlockables but well this makes me happy for not having waited for the US release of the game.

yeah, the analog nub is in the shittiest place imaginable when it comes to using it in racing games.. i find it really hard to use it. i wish they had put it where the dpad is
