Ridley Scott is in negotiations to direct Matt Damon in The Martian, an outer space adventure project being made by 20th Century Fox.

Scott is sitting in the chair vacated by Drew Goddard, who left the project due to his directing commitments for Sony’s Sinister Six, the planned Spider-Man spinoff.
Scott will also become a producer on the project, joining Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood, who originally found the book the movie will be adapted from.
Martian was written by Andy Weir and self-published by Amazon on Sept. 27, 2012. Goddard wrote the script.

Described as being in the vein of Robert Zemeckis’ Cast Away and Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 (both of which starred Tom Hanks), Martian centers on an astronaut who is stranded on a Martian colony and struggles to survive. Back on Earth, NASA tries to mount a rescue mission.

Damn it, when I read "outer space adventure" I was hoping for something more pulpy.

Guess it's gonna take Episode VII (or Guardians) to kickstart the new golden age of space operas.

Not that The Martian doesn't sound like it could be great...

A creature feature? Could be interesting.

Uh, no. It's about a mission to Mars that goes wrong and leaves a single astronaut stranded. He proceeds to plan his survival alone on the planet with limited supplies.

It's based on the book by the same name. It's really good.

So Cast Away in Space. I'll make sure not to watch any trailer of this.

Sounds like Mission to Mars with Maaaaaaatt Daaaaamon instead of Gary Sinise. Can't wait to see what Scott will bring to the project!

I hope it's as good as the counselor but with the special effects of prometheus and the visceral action of the gladiator.
