Speaking with the press today, Ridley Scott talked about his assorted films in the works now that he's done with the Crusades epic "Kingdom of Heaven".

The "Gladiator" sequel's status is "nothing at the moment, but we're trying to find a good solution for a sequel" says Scott. Logan's script is "not quite there yet. Remember there's no Maximus anymore, I think the task is quite difficult...there is a next generation idea but it's very loose at the moment."

In regards to an "Alien 5" there hasn't been any movement on it despite the talk. Would he return to the franchise though if offered? "It's all to do with the material, if the script was great - of course".

The long in development "Tripoli" he hopes will get made one day "It's a great script and a great time in history as well".

As for what he has in the works right now - "I've got this western, and a comedy - they're all very different but they're all coming together quite fast."

Tripoli's story is interesting:

This is the grand epic adventure of how William Eaton (Reeves), a diplomat representing President Thomas Jefferson and the United States in North Africa, joined forces with Hamet Karamanli, the exiled heir to the throne of the Barbary Coast nation of Tripoli (now called Libya) in 1804 to overthrow a corrupt ruler (Hamet's brother) who had taken his place. Organizing a relatively small group of 500 soldiers comprised of U.S. Marines (does "to the shores of Tripoli" sound familiar?), Arabs and Greeks, Eaton successfully marched across 600 miles of desert to storm and capture the seaport of Derna in April, 1805. Eaton and his men then prepared to continue their fight all the way to the capital city of Tripoli...

He's actually moving forward with a Gladiator sequel? I thought that idea was trashed a long time ago when there were rumblings about the possibility of a prequel detailing the love story pre-Gladiator.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
A Gladiator sequel is a BAD idea... especially if it's named anything along those line... Crowe/Maximus MADE that movie.... hell I'm not even sure I'd be interested in a prequel(the movie stands on its own so well IMO).... though there's definitely lots to tell there... his previous relationship with Lucilla, his rise, etc... and visually it should be too hard to have Crowe in a sequel... he was so bearded in Gladiator that a cleaner cut version would automatically look younger...

Agreed. A sequel wouldn't work at all. If it introed an entirely new cast it could end up sucking as bad as other sequels for 1 hit wonders. (See: Dragonheart: A New Beginning)

Some movies just DO NOT need sequels. As far as the prequel goes though, I guess it could work, but ONLY if he got Crowe to sign on again.

Return of the dead?

Or maybe a prequel?

I'm far more interested in seeing Ridley Scott do a western than Tripoli, or hell, even the soon-to-be-released Kingdom of Heaven.

As for the 'comedy' he references, I assume he means A Good Year: "Adapted from a Peter Mayle novel, A Good Year follows a London banker who moves to Provence after inheriting a vineyard. But when he arrives, he meets a Californian woman who claims that she owns the place already." It's apparently a mix of romantic comedy and mystery. I checked out the book and reviews seem pretty average.

actually, I used to think that a gladiator sequel sounded awful. however, after thinking about it, maybe it wouldn't be. It doesn't have to be a direct sequel... cast somebody to play Lucius, and have it while he's emperor about 20 years old. Make up a few wars, paint them as real, and you have a brand new war movie tied into the Gladiator scene.

A Gladiator sequel would work if you just jump 50 years ahead in that timeline and have a common peasant rise to power (through fighting). Sort of like a 'Rocky' with sandals and spears. It could work ... and you could still reference the original movie by what happened politically since Maximus was around (describe the political climate through flashbacks)

Maybe I am simple, but watching death matches in an arena NEVER gets old.

I can't wait to see what Ridley Scott does with a Western. Sign me up on that one.

I just saw Troy the other day, and it gave me a new appreciation of Crowe's performance in Gladiator. I like most of Brad Pitt's stuff (Fight Club, etc.) but he just couldn't pull off the warrior role. Russell Crowe looked like a gladiator, Brad Pitt looked like a movie star who'd been hitting the nautilus machines.

If he was to do a Western, I'd like to see him do Stephen Kings Dark Tower. With a big enough budget to film a trilogy of movies at one time like Peter Jackson had with LoTR, he could do Stephen Kings seven book series proud.

Tripoli sounds intresting to me.

So true. When I saw Troy in theaters, I thought it was pretty sweet. But I hadn't watched Gladiator in a while. I watched it again a few weeks ago, and realized just how fucking awesome Russell Crowe is. And how Gladiator is about 10X better than Troy. Russell Crowe could beat the shit out of Brad Pitt and Eric Bana at the same time.

But could he take Orlando Bloom?
Probably not, because as Crowe was distracted by Bana and Pitt, Orlando Bloom would be a pussy and pull out a bow.

I swear to God, if he even touches a bow in Kingdom of Heaven, I'm going to walk out of the theater.

Gladiator is badass. Man I love that movie. I really hope they don't make a prequel or sequel, as it stands on it's own quite well.

The western Scott talks about might be his rumoured adaptation of Blood Meridian, one of my favorite books.
I just looked it up at Amazon, and it sounds like something pretty special, and Ridley Scott would probably be an excellent choice for helming a film version, at least based on the couple reviews I read.

Blood Meridian is amazing. McCarthy's prose is rich and memorable. Like a good photograph, McCarthy paints amazing pictures in your imagination that are unforgettable. It is definately a must read.

However, it would be quite a challenge to accurately adapt the novel to film. The story itself is quite long and dense. The subject matter of the text would surely be sacrificed in a film adaptation; a film about a group of wicked men brutally murdering native americans for profit wouldn't be much of a crowd-pleaser. The novel is in many ways an exploration of the nature of evil. If it were accurately adapted on film, it would make Unforgiven look like Young Guns.

I do want to see him direct "A Good Year." A Ridley Scott movie set amidst the wineries and vineyards of Italy would be nothing short of tasty visual candy.
