So up until now these Olympics have:

Zika virus + super-resistant bacteria + failing venue constructions + poor ticket sales + ISIS threatening Rio with a terrorist attack + State declaring bankruptcy.

Is Godzilla going to show up next or what?

Wasn't there also insane amount of pollution in the water

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
This whole thing has just been swirling around in the toilet since before the World Cup....

Olympic location don't really make money either. I'd hate to see the Olympics get cancelled almost as much as I would have to them to have these Olympics.

That sad part is that Rio will probably pull off a spectacular opening ceremonies which will probably be just an extended Carnival parade and the world will overlook the horrible problems there.

Looks like someone forgot it's the Olympic games. A game should never come before public security or safety.

the Olympics are a mistake.

only a very few like Salt Lake City and Vancouver turn a profit.

the rest gets run into the ground into a money pit like Athens and Montreal.

Once they run out of developing countries to extract money from, the IOC will have to figure something else out. Any smart modern city should rightly refuse it nowadays unless they could just use existing infrastructure.

Maybe I don't know what the process is, but isn't there any sort of vetting before they pick a place as corrupt and sensitive to an investment as large as hosting the Olympics is? I guess the Zika outbreak couldn't be accounted for, but certainly the country's infrastructure should have raised some flags.

first thing they care about is getting their bribe money. then it's just making sure the games can be played even if it's in somewhat okay conditions.
So gross. The picture of all the dead fish ain't so hot either.
i think they also found an arm in it.

Back then Brazil was in another shape entirely, everything looked bright, things went south really quick afterwards.

Actually the infrastructure is not really a huge problem right now, for the World Cup it was in much worse shape and that turned out alright. Security is my main concern honestly.

The Olympics will come together at the last second, which is how everything is done here, and be a great one. Brazilians know how to throw a party. Then afterwards, the economy and political system will fall apart even more and...life will go on somehow

Aside from the bribes, the IOC has treated it like a privilege and opportunity for these countries to actively redo their infrastructure to support the games. Does the country have access to loans that can support those renovation and feed everyone's pockets? That's all that needs to be checked. It's 7 years away when they vote, things will always get better!

Have the Olympics/World Cup always been White Elephants or is their devastating effects on the host nation's economy a recent thing?

IOC doesn't care. The only ones who get screwed are the host country citizens.

The Olympics are a parasite, basically.

Why isn't there one stable location for the Olympics? Why does it have to be moved around to a different place every time?

I wish the Olympics were somehow a smaller affair, something less lavish and more contrived instead, the crazy amount of money spent is astonishing and everything is bloated.
Maybe that way a few less (almost) billions would be needed, that way more "affordable", all the debts basically helps to bankrupt cities and countries.

It's a big money laundering, prostitution and drug selling front.

I believe the Olympics were great for Atlanta in 96. I worked there and got the easy job of escorting the women's Basketball team from their buses into their stadiums and lounging the rest of the time.

Actually for this Olympics a big part of the infrastructure is already there, the big "white elephant" could be the new stuff like the Villa Olimpica, but in theory it's "supposed" to be used later as some sort of sporting center. Now if that actually happens no one knows, I'll bet on "no", but extravagant stadiums won't happen at least, they are using the Maracana and the Sambodromo, structures that are already there and are used frequently.

Nope, I would just wait another 4 years

It's a shitty situation (no pun intended), for some of these athletes waiting four years is not an option, this might be their last Olympics. The career of a professional athlete doesn't have a long lifespan. However I don't think we are going to get such extreme cases as rotting flesh.
