Road Rash 3DO

I heard 'Rusty Cage' by Soundgarden on the radio today, and man if my mind didn't wander back to Road Rash 3DO.

Played that game for many hours, I think it was one of the selection screens.

Best memory is hitting that old lady right at the top of the hill in the city track and flying about 3 city blocks in the air. Same with PCH, you can hit a rock or something and completely skip over one of the curves.

3DO had some good games, despite the haters.

I still own my FZ-10 along with Wing Commander III (the best version of the game ever, even better than the PC one), Demolition Man, Starfighter, and a couple others.

Road Rash 3DO was one fine fucking game. Tim, are we going to get a sequel any time? You kept hinting that something is in the works. I hope it pans out. A next gen Road Rash would be all kinds of awesome.

Last I heard, there was some preliminary work being done somewhere in EA on a next-gen RR. Of course, that was nearly 8 months ago.

I REALLY hope something comes out of it. I'm sure EA Canada could pound out an impressive next-gen Road Rash. I really mis this series, it's so intense and fun, and next gen hardware would only make it better.

Too bad Jacked never came out. It was a next-gen Road Rash clone by 3DO that was close to being released when they went bankrupt. Played it at E3 2003 and it was good arcadey fun.

Yeah, a next-gen Road Rash would rock.

I miss the series.

The 3DO version rocked, as did the 3DO version of Need For Speed.

Hell, The Fifa wasn't to shabby either.

In case anyone's interested, they made a PC version of Road Rash that was a port of the 3DO version. It's pretty faithful, same music, etc.

I had a 3DO and alot of games. Need For Speed was the BEST on 3DO. its been downhill ever since.

one thing that baffles me though, why was the parallax scrolling taken out of the backgrounds in 3DO Super Street Fighter II Turbo ?

p.s. I wanted an M2 badly.

the good thing is, the first multi-core PowerPC game console (M2 was also) is coming out this year :) Xbox360, and with graphics from the former 3DO Systems (CagEnt, part of MS) mixed in with ATI's

Monster Magnet, Swervedriver, I'm fairly certain that Helmet was on the soundtrack as well. Who would have foreseen that something so cool would devolve into the shitfest known as EA Traxx? :lol Regardless, one of the best games ever, still play it now and then to this day.

You must be high. The loading times were atrocious, and the PSX version's graphics and framerate spanked the 3DO version's 8 ways from Sunday. Hell, I worked on it. :D

damn, i remember borrowing my buddy's 3D0 back in the day. Road Rash was loads of fun, almost made me want to save up and get a 3D0 (they were like what? $500 at the time?) My brother got the same feeling, but for some reason it was from Way of the Warrior. He also played a lot of Hell, that wierdass CGI adventure game with Dennis Hopper.

I was a huge fan of the 3DO and I agree, both Road Rash and Need for Speed were great. NFS was definitely the "show off" game your friends would flip out about. Not just graphics, it was one of the first times I remember cars in a game having any real sense of weight.

edit: And I think the Monster Magnet song was "Tractor." Definitely something from (the completely ass kicking) Spine of God.

I liked WotW too:

Was Way of the Warrior Really That Bad?

I guess it's ok to mention this...but work on a Road Rash game began around the time EA released Rumble Racing back in 2001. The team behind RR had actually put together code for a new RR game. I know this because I used to be cool with one of the programmers and he let me know about it.

Now, the programmer isn't at EA anymore...and if memory serves right, the team was dismantled and RR was axed. But very, very early code of it does, apparently, exist.

Yeah seriously, that's the version that I got and it's great. I'm not sure how it runs on XP, but if you're a RR fan it's a must imo.

This game had alot going on.. If the sense of speed didn't do it for you then running across the old lady with her walker and hearing this splat sound immediately afterwards sealed it.

I played the hell out of Way of the Warrior. I'm sure it was horrible. I'm afraid to pop it in again and ruin my childhood memories.

Road Rash indeed rocked. Same with SSF2T, Star Control2, Total Eclipse etc. I liked my 3D0.

I bought a 3DO for Wing Commander III, since I didn't have a PC at the time.

Can't agree about it being the best version, though. There were a lot of play mechanics excised from the game thanks to the simpler graphics in the 3DO version.

As for a new Road Rash, I'd heard it was being worked on up at EAC, but was later scrapped. That was last year.

The 3DO version of Star Control 2 is the best version of easily one of the finest games of the 1990s.

I played Wing Commander 3 on the PC, though. It was a letdown after Wing Commander 2-it seemed like a lot of the more interesting gameplay mechanics of the series introduced in WC2 were kind of put aside in three so you could watch Mark Hamill chase tail instead. Lame.

I made it to the final boss - my friends couldn't believe I spent so much playing it (they were big Samurai Shodown fans)

I believe Wing Commander had porn star ex Ms. Charlie Sheen Ginger Lynn.

Concur. Great game, loved the little spaceship battles.

I thought 3DO RR sucked. It completely eliminated all the charm and crazy winding roads from the first two and made it a different game entirely. And then for RR3 and RR Sega CD, they tried to ape the graphics, style and animation from the 3DO version and the series went straight into the toilet never to be returned to it's once great heights.

I'm playing road rash on the pc right now, just had to drop by and tell yall how cool this game is hahaah. I am still looking for a 3do too, but no such luck on a cheap one, say 25 or 50 bucks.

Also the n64 version is ok too, along with those psx ones which i plan on picking up.

The n64 version was pretty cool. I liked the genesis ones a lot too. I remember the 3DO one looked very nice at the time. Anyone have any pics?

Edit: Oh man my memory has failed me..

Road Rash 3DO was incredible... as was Need for Speed (the best NFS ever, by far) and Foes of Ali and Battlezone and Twisted (man I miss Twisted) and Return Fire and Slame -N -Jam. Hell I even liked Captain Quazar. Wing Commander III was incredible also. I also had a great time with a game called Killing Time.

Oh the memories... ::sigh::

And imo, Need for Speed on 3DO beat the ever loving SHIT out of the Playstation version.... which didn't even feel like the same game. I could barely believe it, as I was looking forward to a better version of a favorite of mine, only to be competely stunned at how awful it was. And I'm not talking about load times or whatever.

Need For Speed was what i played the most on 3DO. never cared for Road Rash 3DO.

other games that got alot of playtime:

Return Fire
Wing Commander 3
Samurai Showdown
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

3DO Road Rash was great. If they made another one in the same style, I'd be a happy boy. All racing games should take note: Forget the stupid trick systems. Forget the "pimp my ride" garbage. Simulated violence at high speeds is where it's at!

Dude, demi is selling a 3DO right here on GAF in the buy/sell/trade thread.

LOL demi owns a 3D0? He's what, 19?

Anyway the amount of hours I put into RR 3D0 is embarrassing to say the least

LOL that is twice as old as you...

...like your woman.

I was testing my 3DO for the first time since I bought it and popped in Twisted

This game is lame.

You guys are stupid.

Get this out of my house.

Now.

I thought the N64 version wasn't bad. Anyone play that one?

But I long for the digitized visuals.

I had this idea for a simple rally game, where you'd basically record a video of driving through a track. Then you'd super imposed a 3D rally car on top of the track and it would control like the older racers (OutRun, Road Rash, etc.). They could do something like that with a next gen version. Sure, it doesn't control like a real racer, but it will be just as fun as the older version and look UNREAL.

Road Rash was one of the three games that convinced me to buy a 3DO, Wing Commander III and Need For Speed being the others.

I'm calling bullshit on your WCIII comment, though. I loved the game on the 3DO, because I'd never played the PC one. The PC one is better just for the carrier battles alone, where you could actually fly into the ships and such. Plus the control was a million times better on the PC.

The 3DO one did have the video bit that explained why the hell Hobbes did what he did, though, so that was cool.

3DO was a very underrated console. Road Rash of course was one of the best games on the machine, and imo the best RR ever.

Also EA - you own both the RR IP and Criterion. You know what to do. :)

RR 3D0 was the game that got my best friend and his bro to save up $400 for one of the Goldstar systems.

I think I've spent more time playing Star Control 2 3D0 more than any other game before or since. Brilliant doesn't even begin to describe that masterpiece. I could go plug it in tonight and get right back into it.

And maybe I'm a nutjob, but I played the shit out of Escape from Monster Manor. Back when the masses were slobbering over the pixelated demons in Doom, I was blasting through insanely detailed corridors and shitting my pants at the sight of stop-motion floating heads, ghosts, spiders and grim reapers. That soundtrack gave me nightmares. :lol

I bought the big, bulky Panasonic 3DO the Christmas that Street Fighter and Samurai Shodown hit. Unfortunately, both were unfaithful ports, but at the time, there was enough hype to suck me in. Road Rash was probably the best game I played on 3DO, but I tried an awful lot of other crap since I worked at an import shop at the time. Need for Speed was underwhelming IMO -- it was slow as molasses on 3DO. And Gex was overrated too.

I don't miss 3DO at all. What's Trip up to these days, anyway?
