Roblox to implement Face Verification

After years of complaints, Roblox has announced a historic change in its security system. Starting in January, the video game platform will require age verification through facial recognition and will block any chat between adults and minors.

The measure comes after multiple complaints from families and organizations that warned about the risks of grooming, harassment, and exposure to inappropriate content. The process guides the user to record certain facial movements and determines an age range. The company states that the images are processed by an external provider and are deleted immediately, without storing persistent biometric data.

How about we just destroy Roblox altogether?
That sounds like a much better idea than having kids record video to be sent to some "external provider" for "verification".

Edit: To elaborate on this ~
Normalizing sending pictures and videos to whatever website asks for them seems like Not A Good Idea at that age (or really any age)?
How we went from "Don't share any information on the internet, honey" to "In this house, if a website asks us to take pictures of ourselves and send them to strangers, we do it!" in such a short time is pretty mind boggling.

I wanted my cyberpunk dystopia to have more flying cars and sexy cyborg samurai; and less of whatever this is :(

On one hand, I'm glad they're finally taking some action against the legions of adult weirdos on there.

On the other hand, I'm not having my kid's face sent to Roblox or whatever dumb vendor they use for verification. I can already picture the "We're sorry, we got hacked and your kid's info and picture were stolen so here's a $5 Robux gift card" letters they'll be sending out in a year.

I had been playing it with my kid so that I could monitor any weirdness, but this will be the end of the road.

Roblox is pro-pedos. They want to promote Tinder/omeglee aspect to their platform too. I'm sure those people will find a way to continue to engage in that behavior within the platform. It doesn't help that some kids will mess around in "adult spaces" too. As someone said; The only option is to nuke Roblox.

this will greatly hurt roblox in a way nothing else really could so..

so while i am usually opposed to stuff like this - for roblox I will make an exception

great news

I mean do you guys realize how many kids are on fortnite and COD? I was playing Warzone, I never play Warzone but jumped on one time and I was paired up with what sounded like a 6yo boy, he was my squad mate and I was just talking to him on voice chat. I a grown man was talking to this 6yo boy on Warzone via voice chat, he happened to be my squad mate. Oh and man how many times I've been paired up with kids on Fortnite and Fortnite has *drum roll* voice chat. So yes I've talked to many random kids on Fortnite.

Should we strip voice chat from Fortnite? Should we strip voice chat from the COD games and Warzone?

Should we have age verification on Fortnite too? What about COD and Warzone where I've been randomly paired up with minors and I've talked to them via voice chat?

This whole age verification thing where you're forced to send a pic of your face to use the service. I don't like it. It's a slippery slope cause what's next? Seriously this is just the beginning, what comes next?

It's censorship is ultimately what it is. It's Orwellian. Big Brother is watching you!!!! Big Brother is gonna watch us all now and make sure we all behave.

I mean yeah there's millions of kids playing fortnite and COD and Warzone which all have voice chat.

I guess we should just strip voice chat from Fortnite and COD and but wait, that's not good enough, just put in forced age verification too.

Remember Big Brother is watching you.

I hate pedos too but I also know this is a slippery slope we're on.

I wonder what they'll be demanding next?

They're going to verify that every user has a face? Seems like a waste of resources.
It's Big Brother shit. It's straight up Orwellian!

Definition of Orwellian:
Use the adjective Orwellian to describe something that is similar to the writing style of novelist George Orwell, or that reminds you of his books' subjects — especially anything "Big Brotherish" like surveillance.

George Orwell is best known for his 1949 dystopian novel "1984," with its themes of social injustice and a controlling, authoritarian government. The word Orwellian is most often used to talk about real-life situations that are reminiscent of this kind of state control and surveillance, called "Big Brother" in the book. Any hint that our government is watching or listening to us as we make phone calls or do Internet searches feels at least a little bit Orwellian.

Errr…ok.

This appears to be a duplicate thread. Can one of the moderators merge?

Why would I allow my minor son to be photographed for your game?

He showed me this yesterday I think. You have to use a photo to talk in game. I have all chat disabled.

He wants to talk with a friend from school to play together but I'm like… uh what's to stop a diddler to fake a photo? This wasn't an ID just a picture you take with your phone.

So diddlers now could get access to your kids pic perhaps?

And even if not I don't want Roblox to have pics of my son.

Fucking looney tunes world.

I couldn't help but wonder about your post history. All I can really do about it now is blink slowly and make myself a drink.

This game is cancer

There are lots of kids on Fortnite and COD and Warzone which all have voice chat so should we strip voice chat from these games too? Should these games also get age verification?

This is Big Brother shit man.

By virtue of this not being a government actor, this has absolutely nothing to do with big brother

If anything, this is closer to some sort of cyberpunk dystopia

I put 100,000 hours in this game and play endlessly every single day "chatting" with others, and starting in January I'm done. Nothing to do with face verification!!!

I don't play at all. I tried it brief a few years back because I was curious and that's all I could handle. Get rid of those sick weirdos praying on kids

It's the only way to be sure.

LOL -- I've had this almost exact exchange before.

Stupid parents let their kids talk to strangers on the internet, some parents even gift cellphones to children.

Because of stupid parents we are all be forced into digital ID bullshit (already a thing in UK And Australia)

I mean, that just sounds weird. You make it sound weird. Whenever I get paired with actual kids in a game, I immediately disconnect and for various reasons. I never stay and play with children. Parents playing with their children, family members, etc., obviously fall within their own context, but grown men randomly chatting with 6 year old kids in a war game? No thanks. It's still fucking weird, even without anything actually creepy happening.

Hey did you know quite a few people go to prison in the UK over something they said on facebook? I mean one guy simply said something anti-immigrant and he was sent to prison for like 2 years in the UK.

"UK police make over 30 arrests per day for 'offensive' online communications under vague laws criminalising messages that cause 'annoyance', 'inconvenience' or 'anxiety'. Over 12,000 such arrests occurred in 2023 alone, with civil liberties groups warning of a chilling effect on free speech. Most cases do not result in conviction, yet individuals are subjected to police detention and reputational damage merely for expressing controversial views online." https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-10-2025-002239_EN.html

I am so grateful we got the 1st Amendment here in the USA. I mean the stuff I've said on social media. If I were in the UK I'd probably be in prison. But I'm a free man here in the USA. I hate tyrants. Many politicians are tyrants. If you take away free speech you're a tyrant.

Why disconnect? I'm just here to play videogames.

The problem is that the internet began without guard rails, grew up without guard rails, and now quite a few people won't accept most forms of guard rails without calling it the worst possible thing or considering it censorship.

There is no solution that will please anyone because we screwed it up to begin with.

So of course things were going to naturally head this way, because all Roblox can do is apply a bandaid to the situation that fits with what everyone else is already doing, so that they can attempt to fix things on their end.

Working the field of childhood education, I hear a lot of kids talk about playing Roblox online. There is a very deep and real worry that they will be preyed upon by pedophiles taking advantage of their naïveté. They are far too trusting and there are a lot of bad people out there unfortunately. The world of social media has made the current generation too open and willing to share their personal information with any Tom, Dick, or Harry; it's honestly pretty scary. Cyber bullying and predation abound.

At first glance it's like "oh great now the grown fuckin adults will have to verify themselves"

But then I remember how easy it is to fake that shit, and that IN NO FUCKING WORLD IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO SEND PICTURES OF YOUR CHILDREN TO A VIDEO GAME COMPANY

Like how often have the big publishers had accounts get compromised, how much trust do you have in ROBLOX!?

I think this is only needed if the account is to have communication with other users enabled.
Unfortunately it's not quite that simple and Roblox made a mess for themselves giving creators too much leeway.

As a parent, you can disable the official/main messaging function of the Roblox app, but many games get right around this by having their own in-game messaging. In some cases where there is no in-game messaging, players will write what they want on a sign for their character to hold up.

In most games, there really isn't a foolproof way to stop weirdos from bothering kids.

Fucking looney tunes world.

At least according to what they say. You'd have make a variety of a facial movements, so scanning a face of the correct age wouldn't work. And a third party uses the data for verification and then deletes it.

Again, according to what they say. At least in theory it appears to make sense.

This really sucks, and I really don't agree with the change. There are some games where chat is essential, like the popular game Dandy's World where communication is hugely beneficial to the players success. I'm not letting my children upload pictures of themselves to some Roblox database, so I guess a ton of their favorite games just got worse. I imagine a ton of other parents will come to the same decision.

Honestly, my take is that the problem they are trying to address is nothing new. Predators will always flock to where the kids are, and it's why we have non-stop warned since the dawn of internet that parents should stay on top of what their children do online. Apparently, that's too difficult for the modern-day parent? I think Roblox is coming under heat because it's reaching unprecedented levels of popularity with kids which then amplifies the predator problem.

I always find it somewhat funny, but mostly annoying, when so many people stomp all over Roblox while making it clear they don't understand what it even is. You see lots of posters in this thread already at it. My kids and I have enjoyed so many fantastic games through the years on Roblox. It offers some really awesome games and experiences that you can't find anywhere else.
